How to Remove and Install a Front Differential on GM Truck or SUV

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

In this video, we show you how to replace a front differential on a 2003 Chevy Suburban 2500, as well as discuss some of the benefits to using ATP Automotive Remanufactured Front Differential.
ATP’s fully remanufactured front differentials offer the best alternative to bench rebuilding or buying a used differential unit. And with our no-core program, you save time and hassle by not needing to return the core.
All of our front differentials come ready to install and only require you to add three to four pints of SAE 75W-90 Synthetic Axle Lubricant depending on the application.
Each Differential case is carefully inspected and totally reconditioned to meet original specifications. Then all units are supplied with new bearings and seals. Additional parts such as ring and pinion, inner case, and other internal parts are rigorously, thoroughly tested and replaced if out of O.E. specifications. This is why all ATP front differentials are covered by our industry leading 5 Year, 100,000 Warranty.

what it does not show, is that if your truck has a rack and pinion steering setup, the entire steering rack needs to be unbolted and removed, otherwise the diff housing won't clear it.

..well, me too... I usually invent new curse words while working on stuff like this..then again, I am usually doing this kind of work laying on the ground under the vehicle, poor lighting, dirt falling in my eyes, very often while it's cold or drizzling, or it's getting dark on me..maybe if I had a nice dry, warm, well-lit shop and a lift, I would stop cursing while doing this kind of work?.. :)

Good video and abbreviated for speed. I would suggest torque values for the various nuts and bolts be spec'ed out before reassembly. As this was a greasy dirty undercarriage, maybe a high pressure wash before the work will make things more enjoyable.

Good overall video. He left out the part of prying ( beating the hell out of) the steering assembly to remove (requires a forked pry bar). There are some torque specs missing as well. Those flanges to the CV joints will come out if not tightened properly! Been there. Done that.

@DimebagVision its good practice to keep underside and engine bay clean. If you check both regularly you will know exactly where a leak comes from if one happens. Vs having it dirty it will be alot more difficult to detect a leaks source. Also keeping it clean helps prevent corrosion. But you do you

The removal of the center link was definitely staged. I don't know of anyone who has been able to just unbolt at the idler arm and pitman arm and the center link just pulls right off. They always end up needing a hammer as large as the truck itself, or you run your 30+ gallon air compressor empty trying to use an air hammer to break it free. In my case, I broke a 2 ton puller trying to get the center link off of the idler arm bolt. Ended up removing the entire front steering assembly, from outer tie rod end, to outer tie rod end, with the idler arm and bracket attached, and beating the fire out of the center link and idler arm with a pickle fork and a sledge hammer.

You're missing allot of steps and the actual hard stuff. What about the fact that you need a ball joint separating kit to remove steering relay rod and tie rod ends and you make it look like you just have to unscrew it. What about the fact that upon installing, if you do the top and bottom mounts bolts first the passenger side bracket doesn't line up? You need to install bracket loosely then mounts or this will waste allot of your time. I feel like you make this video look easy on purpose to sell parts. NTM how ridiculously unbalanced the diff is on a trans jack.

Just remember to get an alignment done after this job because of the fact that you disconnected steering assembly you will need an alignment to readjust toe and Camber otherwise you got to ruin your front end that should have been mentioned in the video on another thought torque specifications are very important because you don't want to over tighten your bolts or they will Snap On You and then you're going to have a big problem it's good to invest in a Haynes manual for that particular model vehicle that you may be working on it will give you torque specifications and additional tips that will help you in your project it's always good to have a another perspective on your repair

I guess on models other than envoy or trailblazers you don't need to remove the fan, shroud, compressor, alternator, loosen motor mounts and jack up then engine that is besides taking the wheels, axels and suspension apart. None of which is the hard part. GM should start designing vehicles that make sense instead of running axels through the oil pan to the differential. Stop this planned obsolescence and build stuff better you charge way too much for this garbage.
