So if you saw the part 3 of the Mini build, I was not able to remove the exhaust manifold from the cylinder head of my N14 motor, because there was an exhaust stud on the turbocharger that was in the way. It was preventing me from getting a ratchet with a socket in there to remove the 11mm nut securing the exhaust manifold. In this video, I show you how I remove the stud without breaking anything, and without stripping the threads.

If it comes out this way it wasn't stuck. Stuck is when there's no threads left and the vice grips or stud remover you had to use are just tearing metal off the stud.

I don't even have to try on on 2V 4.6. I know for a fact there are no room for any kind of tools up in there. I really don't want to pull the damn manifolds for that... At that point I'm putting headers on and that is gonna be pricy and a massive pain too.

As a 28 year mechanic and enthusiast I can say honestly it doesn't work everytime but does help with multiple deep creep soak and heating with torch. Smack it a few times as well to break threads loose as there always rusted. Once you smack it and heat plus soak a few times usually comes out but there are some your taking the turbo off for sure. At that point just put the stud in a vise.

Cara Milanmastracci, A well executed video tutorial indeed. Your personality coupled with great photography is a gift to us you tube students. This is awesome! I used an impact driver to drive the studs back into the left cylinder head (what a silly goose) and I knew I was gonna do that but I didn’t think it was in that tight. I’ll be able to try this if I ever have to take those studs out again.

Great video, I've come across situations on motorcycles where this is necessary but there isn't enough room for a wrench. If you round off the corners on the top nut so a socket can bypass it and grab the second nut you'll be able to remove the stud the same way.

my stud is under a water pump, rusted and only threaded enough for one nut, and the torx tip is rounded off and gone. I tried this method on an m8 1.125 threaded stud and the new nuts milled the threads off of the stud in that area and it just spun around this was an m8 1.125 thread. P.S. I said fudge it and welded a 1" nut over the end of the stud and eased it out. Great Success !

Excellent video. You never fail to please! Here's an idea, if you add a few more lumens on your face when you're doing your tripod shots your camera lens will have more depth of field from the tip of your nose to right behind your ears. I see your camera continually refocusing on your eyes and if that depth of field was deeper (with a little more light) the 6 inches from the tip of your nose to behind your ears would stay in constant focus. As if you didn't have enough to think about ; )

Worst part is, after the past year of work, new gas, fuel filter, oil change, and regular stuff you'd do after that much time with a car sitting, it's throwing a throttle body code, and then I almost burned the damn car down, along with my garage, after using a little too much starter fluid; it's been a shit show. But yeah, this did work, and somebody is getting, very gayly, kissed on the mouth.

Hey there, great video! I'll have to remember this when I remove my exhaust. What can I do if the rusty nut was getting rounded and not budging even after applying penetrating oil and no torch since I am doing this is in my garage. My RSX has 3 studs like the one this video connected to the catalytic converter. Break the nut and stud with dremel and push the remaining part using an air hammer? The stud has a head but it's round protrudes about 2mm, so I'm thinking that the stud was pushed in and not screwed in

@@adamcolbertmusic My studs are almost impossible to get to even with a ratchet extension, what I am having to do is halve an M7 nut and try to reverse thread it to clear the threads so that I can put on an M7 nut followed by another M7 nut that I will grind down all edges until nearer an M6 nut and ratchet the larger nut against the smaller one to get it off. If you have an Italian scoot you'll know they are a pain in the ass to work on the second exhaust manifold bolt is a nightmare to get on as it is impossible to get a clear straight angle to ratchet it and there is no room for a spanner of any kind in there.

@@dnawrapsatl Interesting, yea the cruze in general have issues tbh. I have avoided many of them as I have the Aus made holden cruze 1.6l turbo. No turbo issues either. Would go for a subbie but i hear they are common for blown headgaskets due to boxer engines? Always love the look of wrx 🥳 Have a good day Dallas

Damn mine is all stripped out and threads torn up from cutting off the nut. No room to swing a wrench off the manifold anyway. Great idea though. Your idea inspired me to weld a nut on there lol. The heat defintely wont hurt it any.

What do I do when they are so stuck that I’m stripping the nuts by hand with a wrench? Inside and outside if you’re curious.

Does it affect the thread on the stud? And would they be reusable?

  • @milanmastracci

Depending how tight you had to thread them, I would replace them with new ones. If the threads look fine, go for it. Considering new studs are usually about a buck a piece, for 2-3 bucks to replace the turbo studs, that's fine with me.

The stud closest to the exhaust manifold off the turbo housing snapped on me when I was doing my downpipe. I hate the design they used for this

If you have enough clearance you can also grind a slot on the top of it using a dremel and get it out with a flat head screwdriver.
