How to remove a rusted wheel hub bearing assembly the easy way.

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

These Craftsman sockets are great for this job. They hold up to the abuse and many times you have to have 12 pt. to get it done.

This was a great trick to remove a rusted wheel bearing hub. I have a 2005 GMC 4WD Sierra. I beat on that thing for 4 hours with no results, tried heat and a air hammer and nothing happened. Used this power steering as a hydraulic press trick and removed the hub in a matter of minutes. Only tricky part is getting the socket and extension wedged in just right so it doesn't pop out. You are a genius! Thanks for posting this online.

Bad acting aside, this tip IS priceless and I wish I had known it before doing my bearing a few years ago. To others: that rust/corrosion ring will resist big hammers, big torches, pullers, and strong language. DO NOT USE a regular jaw puller as all it will do is drive the axle into differential.

Cool so because u didnt specify this is front hub bearing applicable only, I ended up sawzalling my front knuckle off, sawzalling my rear knuckle off, welding the rear knuckle to the front end to use this method of getting it out. My problem now is my blades are too dull to cut through hardened weld.

Well buddy, I had to leave a comment to thank you for this video! Last night I was heading home to replace my hub (2007 Silverado z71). Turns out- it was in MUCH worse shape than I thought. It started coming apart, and I had to pull over and replace it on the spot (or call a tow truck- or find someone with a truck to go home and get my trailer). Anyways, I popped the wheel off, pulled the caliper off, popped the hub bolts off- and yup. It was stuck. I tried the "putting the bolts half way back in and hammering it" trick, and the "put the wheel back onto the hub and kick the outer edges of the wheel" trick. No dice. Heated it up- didn't budge. WD-40, a lot of hammering, prying, kicking, and still nothing. My girlfriend- who was nice enough to come meet me for moral support (and that 19mm socket I just so happened to leave out of the set), decided to search for a trick to remove this. Of course, I was too stubborn to look myself because I'm a know-it-all (or at least thats what I like to believe). Yours was the first video to pop up. 3 minutes later I was holding the hub in my hand. So thank you. Saved me any more future back problems and possibly a tow bill. You're the man!

Thank you so much, this saved my bacon. I have a 2000 F150 with 250 000 km through salted roads 6 months of the year. Haynes manual said to tap it from side to side... wouldn't loosen even with a 10lbs sledge. This popped it loose enough to get a pry bar in between the bearing and knuckle. I had a hunch you'd have a tip for this situation when I saw your newer posting for wheel bearings, so I scrolled down through your list, watching the ones that grabbed my attention, and found this one!

@zxtenn It has to do with how weak inner tie rods on R and P's are and also on how strong the mounts are. If you do it with a rack and pinion it will destroy your inner tie rod by bending it. And if that doesn't bend your rack will snap at the mount.

Best tip ever. Without your advice I would have scrapped my 1995Volvo 850 even though I had bought a replacement wheel bearing. I have never worked on any car before but thought I would have a go at it because I had no money for garage repairs (it would have cost more than the car is worth). When I couldn't get the assembly out I thought, well that's the end of that then, scrap yard for you; then I came across your video and decided to give it one more try and WOW! It popped right out the very first time. Brilliant. HUGE thanks. Happy Christmas and have a grrrreat 2014.

I live in the winter saltwater rust belt. The power steering press routine didn't work on my 2001 Ram 3500. I had to separate the ball joints from the steering knuckle. Thank you Brian for the excellent tip. Would this work on a 2005 Chevrolet Uplander? Not sure if it has rack and pinion steering or not.

Hey Brian your vids help. Im about to tear into my 99Ram 1500 4x4. Pass side W bearing and both outer axel u joints. My buddy and me are going to do it at his garage on thursday 8/18. There is a fair amount of rust (since I live in Minn)so im going to appreciate more; the tricks you have presented. I have heard from you as well as others the standard (PB lube/penetrating can) and I intend on spraying it on, as much as I can reach, today, so it will hopefuly penetrate an little by thursday.

Brian, I've had wheel hub bearing assemblies so seized into the steering knuckle, a 40 ton press would not press it out... it began to distort the entire steering knuckle. I was left with no other option but to cut them out. I've never used this option that you clearly demonstrated(not because it won't work, but when I've invested a large sum of cash on tools, I just won't risk destroying an extension, unless its an 'el cheapo')

I'm trying to do this on a 98 plymouth g voyager, driver's side front. Problem is, I can't find a place to brace the extension against that won't get damaged or bent. If you've done one on a vehicle like mine, any suggestions would be great, thank you!

first of all great video. I have a question about wheel bearing. what is it that cause the wheel bearing go bad? I've had replaced the same bearing(front driver side)3 times now. and it seems only last couple of years before I need to change it again. it's a 2007 honda pilot has 115k miles. it has been driving on snowy condition. thank you in advance

You're welcome- I felt the same way about the guy who taught it to me. You can see Kevin in my Toyota axle rebuild video. It's fun to watch him work!
