This right here is why I only use barbless hooks. Easy to just slide out. I also haven't successfully landed a fish in 12 years.

I was fishing in the pond behind my house this morning and got hooked in the thumb. After much pain from getting the fish off and cutting the lure loose I came inside and did a search on KZread on how to remove a hook. I've been a fan of this channel for years so it was great to see Richard's video pop up first. I followed the procedure and got the hook out with one quick pop of the line. Thanks for sharing this video Richard!

The Machine. TUFF! This is what i call a 5 star video. The wisdom you just passed on will save myself(more than likely) and anyone else that might use this technique in the future alot of pain and suffering ! Stuck my hands and fingers a many of times ,it happens if you fish, But i never have seen it done this way before. I wish more you tubers would post things like this instead of pushing merch all the time and doing challenges. All fishing videos are awesome but there are a whole lot of people who where never shown how to fish but would love to try and alot of those people ,when they do decide they would like to give our most wonderful sport in the world a try, they look to you tube to learn a few things and i think Gene uses this channel in the best way possible . Having fun and passing his wisdom on. We Holston river bronze back hunters salute you MACHINE. thanks

I have done the same thing. The other option, which I prefer, is to push the barb back out through the finger, clip the hook past the barb, and then slide the hook without the barb out. I am afraid that ripping out the barb the way you did will damage more tissue. I could be wrong; but, it's my preferred method.

Been a while since I "Seen-r-Done" like that Bro. Richard... I saw Hank Parker do it and "Mr. Tn. Vol.," (referring to the hat he wears) aka or better known as Bill Dance do that deal. I cut a treble hook out of a friends bare back, in Vancleave, Ms., back in the 90's. Had the filet knife handy, put just a little upward pressure on the hook, barely touched the knife to the skin and out it came. He said he did not feel the knife at all. Thank you for sharing sir. I believe the others preferred to use braided line, because of little to no stretch.

That literally happened to my friend last time we were out fishing, but he got two barbs embedded. I told him about the trick you showed, as I'd seen it done on a TV fishing show many years ago. He wasn't interested and pushed them through and I helped flatten the barbs so he could back them out. The crazy part, was that he had mentioned it had been a few years since it had happened to him on the drive to the lake! Lucky I've only gotten 1 barb deep on the hand over the year, got stuck many times but fortunately they didn't go past the back of the barb. I also usually net my fish or if I boat flip them, I usually don't grab them out of the air, especially for fish species that typically thrash around unexpectedly! Lots of worse places to get a barb than in the hand.

Holy smokes. You quick and easy. I'm still waiting for the EASY part. I've been hooked on the fingers, hands, shoulder and even the back of my head. The finger and hands were my faults. The shoulder and back of the head were due to another fisherman. It's a lot easier if the barb makes a circle under the skin and comes back out. You can cut the barb off and the rest of the hook will just slide out. I've had to do something very similar but I just grabbed it with some pliers and ripped it out. When it's straight down, your options are kind of limited.

Good info, thank you! Next 2 days my Miss Tammy(wife & best friend) and I are going after some catfish and maybe a few crappie. I'm pretty sure I'll need this info because I seem to be a hook magnet. lol

I got to say that was impressive first of all no cursing or carrying on! I don't think many/any other KZreadrs would have been able to do that. but I am confused as to what the difference between wrapping the fishing line around the hook and yanking it out was versus just taking a pair of pliers and yanking it out did you wrap the fishing line in a way that made the barbed not tear out the meat? Normally I would have just pushed it through and cut the Barb off but it looks like it was stuck in your knucklebone almost? GawwLee!!! You are the man. I sure wish you could fishing with my son and i . We have so much to learn.

Great impromptu instructional video. Next three days it's going to be the worst on the pain scale compared to when you first got stuck just no flopping fish or a pole attached.
