Thanks for the video and the explanation! In our case, the 10amp brake light fuse (slot #5 on the steering column fuse panel) had blown. Replaced the fuse, and the shifter works again. Easy peasy. Who would have thought that something like this would disable a vehicle!

You just saved me hundreds from having my van towed!! I went through a single lane construction zone. Put it in park while I was waiting in line. When our side started to move, I couldn't get it out of park. 10 minutes later, I had a city police officer behind me. They called for the first available to truck. I found your video and was able to get the van back to my shop! Now to find out WHY. I've got a few lights on in the instrument cluster. They will need to be addressed. Leaning towards the ABS sensor.

Few months ago it was raining bad and it was triggered when I slid. Light came on so I put it in park and restarted. You helped me get back home. Very thankful. Just happened to me yesterday again. No pen. So I pulled fuses under the seat related to transmission and or cluster. Fixed. Atleast lights are gone. Honestly don’t know what the cause is

I had this issue with my 2005 sprinter, the pen tricked worked like a charm. All I had to do was change out my break light bulb and it hasn't happened again since.

I found that you also can shut off the engine and restart it and it might work as well. It’s a problem I am having right now. I thought it was a fluid leak causing it

ALSO EASIER.. shut off engine and remove key from ignition. Wait 10 seconds. Then insert key, turn key on, wait for glow plug warmup beeping to stop (ALWAYS WAIT!!!!), turn key to start engine. Then move shifter to drive or whatever position ever you want. The idiot lights on dash are telling you one of the following (or more) dead bulb, tire pressure low, fuse under seat blown, resonator for turbo replacing needed (replacing turbo $1500 replacing resonator $200 or less) and some other causes sent in by people before this post. So do some more reading for causes but the fix is using a pen or stick in the shifter area or restarting the van.... that is it folks.

I think this is a faulty break switch, The little black plastic thing with the white push button that the break pedal pushes on. I forgot what the part is called but I replaced mine. That little white actuator button goes bad.

It happened to me 2 days ago, the abs and disk pad came on and I put it on Park. It would not get off Park and I had it towed to a garage where they dismantled the front panel. It’s still in the shop after 3 days and I will show the mechanics your video, a bit late but thank you!

Ok this works great. But there must be a solenoid in there actually locking it. so I would assume there is a wire i can cut . so I dont have to use a pin every time. What wire will disable this ?

Hi, I'm curious to know what the actual problem was? I am having the same lights appear on my dash, abs, ESP, and the tire light, was it something to do with your breaks? I'm having a hard time diagnosing the issue, thanks in advance!

If you pull a fuse that is under the driver's seat, these warning lights will come on and you will not be able to move the shift lever (unless the "pen" method in the video is used). The fuse is on the lower right and its the middle of the three horizontal fuses (7.5).

Correction: The fuse is on the LOWER LEFT side of the fuses that are under the driver's seat.

Me and my right arm figured it out but I don't recommend that way lol. I'm in a love-hate relationship with my sprinter.

Great piece of info but I'm left wondering what's actually causing this. Maybe a clogged vacuum line?
