Hi I've just replaced both rear calipers and they were beyond help but now my hand brake keeps sticking on to the point that I don't use it and I was wondering if you had any tips, it work fine before replacing the calipers

Ordered a refurb kit for my FN2 even though none of my calipers are seized, I don't want it getting to the point my EP3 was at with knackered calipers lol, preventative maintenance better be worth it!

@@limbo5463 it's a fiddly job, hopefully your calipers won't be as corroded like mine was. The seals fought me lol

Great job. In future You should take off break caliper, clear metal brush, use something like extraction gasoline.

Hi mate just a quick one, one of my calipers has seized so I'm fitting some new ones, but will refurb the ones I'm taking off, but how did you remove the seized piston? There's barely any movement on it for me

When I did mine, I removed the caliper which was still connected to the car via the brake line, I had an unwinding tool however it was seized solid and wouldn't unwind. So I supported the caliper so that the weight of it wasn't straining the brake line and then went to the front of the car and pumped the break pedal about 3-4 times, this then broke the piston free and unwound it so that I could fully remove the piston with the unwinding tool. I hope this helps :)

I did mine yesterday with a G clamp and one of the old pads. Worked well.. mine wasn't seized though.

How did these pistons hold up over time? I need a new rear caliperton my rear left and came across the full kit for all 4 calipers for £68 and thought this was a much cheaper option for sorting out all 4 corners than getting one new one. But my local mechanic advised me to avoid them and just get a new one, guessing he didnt have much faith in them so now i'm not sure which way to go.

I'm still running the refurbished caliper now, zero issues with them. If your mechanic will be fitting them, it would be cheaper for you just to buy a new caliper in all honesty. The kits are good but fitting them can take alot of time, particularly if your calipers are corroded, seized etc.

You buy a lottery ticket that day too? Unless you are the luckiest man alive, no way in hell did that seal just flop back into place! Haha

You remove the hardest part except for the hand brake cable wich is very easy to take out . Just remove the lock pin and you'll be able to free the caliper from the hand brake cable. To make your job easier on the bench.

It was siezed when I was doing the video, UK weather isnt good to us over here, this is the side drains run so all dirt etc gets caught up this side assuming thats why the caliper was siezed originally. Since then off camera, I have replaced the pin so if ever happens again I can do it on the bench 😎

Are you sure the copper grease is alright to use on brakes?

  • @belial7932

Yes it's ok to use copper grease between moving metal parts eg brake pads "ears" or the back of new pads where they get in contact with the piston.

Hi where can I buy dust boot rubber rear for my ep3?

You can buy a refurbishment kit off ebay, I used a company called Frentech UK really good quality and brilliant after sales too, with a new brake piston expect to pay around £20.00 - £25.00.

how did you tell that it was seized? did you notice sny noises or it just felt slow?

  • @FlawlessCulture

Hi Jamie, you could actually hear the brake pads grinding on disc, also the car felt sluggish / slow. When I finally pulled over the smoke was coming from the caliper and you could see and feel the heat from the brake, under closer inspection you could see the rubber boot was damage and you couldnt wind the piston back in with a winding tool. It did play up once before (common known fault) and that was the brake pads seizing in the runner (the piston moved freely), all I did then was remove the pads, clean up the s/s runner, carefully applied copper grease to the runner so that it didn't go on pad or the disk and then clean up the brake pad edge's which sit in the runner and this worked prefectly.

just a warning, do not undo the internal mechanism of the piston, had renewed the rubber seals and i decided to renew the piston, popped the circlip and everything leapt out, now cannot get it back in as it is heavily compressed, had to order a new one off eBay, and wait a couple of days. Anyone know how to reassemble the piston mech?

  • @FlawlessCulture

    @FlawlessCulture

The new piston usually doesn't come with the spring and circlip etc. When I did mine the same thing happened luckily I did it on a table so found all the bits. The way I reassembled the piston was by putting all the bits back into the back of the piston, then used a 17mm long socket and G clamp to compress the spring and so the the C clip locked into place. I hope this helps.

thanks flawless, i did try that, even thought at the time i had all the new parts and then the old parts from the piston, but i could not compress it enough, so I ordered a new piston with the internals in place. Thanks

I am pretty sure you swapped the guide pins. Do one pin at a time so you don't put them the wrong hole. Apparently it does make a difference.
