In this video I refurbish an old shovel that sat out in the weather for years. I cleaned it up and made it new again. Music by the Jingle punks.

Just got given a bunch of these ‘old’ tools. Keen to bring the back to a new life. Thanks for showing how old stuff is better the new stuff.

Nice video. I like the way you think about it being a home shovel not one that will be used everyday on a jobsite. I like the BLO finish myself. I just sat out on the back porch in the spring sun and hand sanded the factory lacquer off of my Menards shovel handle now it's ready for BLO. It's just a home shovel that will see some use when the need arises. Not a jobsite tool :)

Saved it! That was magnificent. You covered all of the basics. Especially concerning the proper tool travel; in respect of the wood grain. You could add(edit into your video) a warning about the use of power tools: those shovels are THIN!, carefully heat treated and tempered. Power tools can overheat the metal to the point changing the temper....be careful. I spray paint the metal either black or clear. Anytime you use a shovel in wet cement, it is a good idea to spray it with a coat of spray paint(any kind or color): the cement won't stick! ...and clean up only takes seconds, not a half hour. Just saying.

Thank you for your kind words! That is also a great idea about the spray paint and cement. I’ll have to try that. Thanks for watching!

Greg this is by far the most informative video to refurbish garden tools for a beginner. Not only did you provide step by step instruction but also edified the use of a grinder during this process. After watching this I restored every one of my garden tools and they look amazing. I even followed your example of using paint on the shanks. I have subscribed to your channel and look forward to more videos as I have now watched all your other ones. Thank you for taking time to make them.

I was happy with the way it turned out. I didn't have that type of shovel until now. It will get some use around the homestead.

would it be that hard just to use sand paper? I mean its just a handle not like a huge table

No, it wouldn't be that hard but it was easier to scrape it than to sand it off. plus the poly gums up the paper. Use whatever you have to get the job done.

I did it with the Woodglut plans.
