How to Refine Silver By Nitric Acid | Copper Method | Silver Refining -Adamjewellery
In this video we are going to show you the full process of silver purification and refining, it will take more than 10 hours of regular practice to complete the whole process for refining the silver dust and silver alloy scrape and converting in to 999 fine pure silver in the purity of 99.99%. Similarly the same technique can be used to recover silver used in gold refining process as silver is used in 50% quantity in gold refining.
The silver alloys are composed of various metals like copper, Zink and tin etc. To extract the pure silver we used opper plate. The pure silver start settling in the bottom in the form of Silver crystals.
Acids and Chemicals used in the refining process:
01- Nitric Acid (HNO3)
02- DI Water
03- Borax
04- Metal melting Furnace
05- Open Space for Process
06- Borosil Beakers
07- Glass Stirrer rod
08- Hot Plate

You would expect 144 g of 'pure' silver ~99% from the process assumming your dust and scrape were sterling silver, so you got an 80.4% yield of theoretical, not 25.6%. So you may still have silver in the nitrate solution. Throw more copper in and collect until no more cementing occurs... Also you can recover the coppper IIRC using zinc or Aluminum in the same way you used copper to cement out the zinc.

AND, silver nitrate shouldn't fume when melting that means you left lots off acid in the end product. And that is resulted because you didn't wash it properly and it ended not having .999 silver... :/
