Precious Metal Refining & Recovery, Episode 7: Fining Silver

I refine some silverware into a pure silver bar.
There seems to be some missing video at around 7:12 not sure why... This has happened before. There is nothing important so I have instructed KZread to just remove the blank segment, lets see if they do it.

    I think the gas coming out of the silver bar while the cooling process is actually oxygen gas. Silver in the liquid state has the ability to dissolve oxygen gas, wich comes out of the solution when the silver hardens. This gives you a rough an sometimes even a sponge like texture to your silver bar. That is one of the main reasons why the stirling silver was invented, because this alloy does not absorbe any oxygen gas. Give it a like so maybe Cody will read my comment :D

    +Cody'sLab but maybe your explanation about the flux and the carbon dioxide isn't to bad either, could be also a combination of both! btw i really love your channel, it's so much fun to watch and educating at the same time. I like how you combine different fields of science like chemistry, geology etc. and just make it so entertaining to watch. keep up the great work!

    +joe doe I don't think it's CO2. I've melted silver before with borax and sodium carbonate as flux and it doesn't fizz like this when solidifying. Sodium carbonate is useful btw because it will reduce any leftover AgCl to metallic silver.

    +Lucas Jonsson A "mole" in chemistry is a way in which chemists are able to quantify the number of molecules present in a substance. Specifically, one mole is 6.02 x 10^23 molecules. No matter what element you are referring to, one mole is always made up of this same number of molecules, however one mole of an element like Hydrogen, will WEIGH much less than one mole of a substance like Gold, even though they have the same number of molecules. One of the better analogies that I have heard is that you can think of the chemistry term "mole," similarly to how you would use the term "a dozen." You can have a dozen eggs, and you can have a dozen elephants, you still have the same number of each, 12, but the weight of the 12 elephants will be far greater than the weight of the 12 eggs.

I was watching the silver darkening in the sunlight and at first I thought it was a light sensitive reaction like Silver Nitrate, and it made me think it would be really awesome if you could make your own photographic film and take a picture with it. Perhaps you could make your own Tintype camera and show us how the photo materials and chemicals work. That would be very cool.

    Hey Cody, I hope you don't beat yourself up over screwing something up when you wing it with an experiment and it doesn't come out the way you want it to. In this case, "what doesn't kill you makes you stronger" truly applies. Learning from your mistakes can sometimes be much better than learning from success. Hell, I'm 19 and have never done an experiment like this in my life. I don't even fancy myself a scientist. The best thing I've done is mixed corn starch with water and punched it. You know about that, I'm sure. But yeah...you learn from mistakes a lot better than success. Keep going, you're going to be the next Michio Kaku in my book. I hope you read this, bud. You're one of my most closely followed KZread channels in my life. And the Cody's Mine series is by far my favorite, I can't see what you'll do with it. And at least relocate that mouse bro!

    In the beginning you say "some are marked as high as 800 and some as low as 400" if you are referring to silver content then NONE of it is actually Sterling which has to be .925 silver. Anything less is not legally marked sterling. Not sure why it would be marked Sterling if 800 is the highest silver content unless the seller stamped it.

  • @83fredly

    @83fredly

    I don't think that is the case with these, firstly there was silver in them and second, if they were going to go to the trouble of marking it "Sterling" they could either leave the numbers off or just put the right ones on there. Maybe the 800 and 400 refers to weight rather than percentage or the eBay seller(s) did not realize Sterling means 925 (or 92.5% silver) and stamped them in hopes of getting more money. It's not illegal to have flatware or hollow wear made out of coin silver or lower percentages, it just can't be marked "Sterling". I love the videos though even if most of the chemistry jargon and math is waaaay over my head.

    83fredly 800 silver is typically german or italian it's a common practice for chinese sellers to buy this cheaper silver stamp it as sterling and resell it at a higher price.

    Alyosha Romanov Yeah his neighbors out in country are too far away and I doubt they care what goes on. It seems like he is at the college/university and it looks like he is living with his girlfriend in probably a rented house and it looks like the neighbors are pretty close. So I was wondering what the neighbors were thinking about all those fumes coming out of the steps leading down to the basement. I was also wondering what the landlord thinks. I think Cody is great. I just hope he doesn't have the cops show up at his door one day or even bash it in because someone misunderstood something.
