Lead acid can last for years. I have a lead acid that running for near about 13 years still in good condition. If you have a dead lead acid battery which haven't used for years chances of recovery is very less.
But you guys can try those methods and hope to recover the battery.
If you have a sealed lead acid battery which is not holding charge and only 2 - 3 years old. chances are the electrolyte was dried so feel those cells with distill water will give it a new life.
Also epsom salt MgSO4 can be used that help to clean lead plates
Also can try a desolator device to desulfate the battery.
I tried this tricks on 6 sealed LEAD acid battery, I successful recover three of them and other there is dead.

    Good video. A desulfator can take time to recover a battery as you demonstrated, I watched one video where he showed a time lapse of a month on using a desulfator. I myself use a PulseTech PowerPulse passive desulfator with a patented frequency used to gently desulfate batteries on my BMW Napa battery for the last three years and so far so good.

    When did you last time charge it. If it you did not charge the battery for long time, it will self discharge and over time sulphate accumulated over lead plates . even you are getting 2v it will hard to recover the battery but you can try at last you have nothing to loss.

  • @Jaker788

    @Jaker788

    It really depends on how much it's been used before. Sealed batteries aren't the most successful at being recovered . If it's a normal sealed battery and not gel or AGM then only add water until the plates are just covered and no more. The electrolyte level will come up significantly after a charge. It could even possibly overflow on a overly discharged battery like that. Just give it a constant current charge 24hrs at a time until the resting (give it at least 8 it rest, 24hrs is more accurate) open cell voltage stops appreciating. Ideally you'd use specific gravity so you're not waiting 24hrs for the voltage to settle, but it's a sealed battery so it may not be possible.

    A desulphator is a device that gives short pulses of higher voltage i.e 16 to 17 volts, versus the normal charging voltage of 14.4 volts. Desulphators, give these higher voltage pulses at low currents such as less than 200 milliamperes, which can help in melting the sulphate deposits on the lead plates, thus making the battery fit for use, once again. Desulphators can make the battery run for another two or three years.

  • @Jaker788

    @Jaker788

    4 жыл бұрын

    It's supposed to give high frequency or high voltage pulses. But what I can tell you is it's not actually worth it, they don't actually do it faster or better than a normal constant current finishing rate. At my work we recover industrial lead acid batteries for forklifts. We've got internal manuals from enersys and deka for recovering batteries and 20 years of doing it. Nothing has worked better than just charging it until the specific gravity stops appreciating, then if needed acid adjusting and a load test to either get 80% capacity or scrap. We also replace cells if it's just 1-2 bad cells. How long a battery lasts after recovery or if it's recoverable depends of how much use or abuse it got before. Sometimes there's a lot of positive plate corrosion and it's just dead. Or most of the plate material has already shed off and the capacity is gone. This is why we load test after it's known to be FULLY charged.

    Even with a desulfator a dead ups battery is not woth saving. You would need distilled water (distilled or regular doesn't matter, the acid takes care of that), next cycle desulfator, then empty the cells completely, add acid and water again and if non of the cells are warped enough for short circuit (they almost always are) you might get 6m/1year in ups and not reliable under heavy load, no load test in video either. Just buy a replacement lithium batterij for your ups, pretty cheap these days, 10y worry free if the ups doesn't break^^ These kind of videos are a waste of time for everyone, hope this helps.

Some people reattach the plastic covers over the rubber plugs using a few small drops of hot glue so that there are gaps between the glue drops through which gases can escape. Because these batteries are not truly sealed, even when new, it is important to keep them upright so that they do not leak acid if turned on their side.

    Yes, you can go Upto 17 or 18 volts, because overcharging the battery will help remove the sulphate deposits from the lead plates. But the fact is that you should keep the caps of the battery open, because the excess pressure and gas build up needs to be relieved. **This should be done in an open and well ventilated environment, and the gases should not be inhaled. Also, keep extra distilled water because you will boil off some of the distilled water inside the battery, so you need to fill in the distilled water.

  • @advaithmadhavan8260

    @advaithmadhavan8260

    4 жыл бұрын

    It will take Upto 24 or more hours to get desulphated completely. And also make sure that the current is less than 200 milliamps. You can use a DC to DC converter or a variable lab bench power supply to supply a voltage above 16 volts and a current about 200 milliamps.

  • @advaithmadhavan8260

    @advaithmadhavan8260

    Also, be sure to continuously cycle the battery, i.e. charge and discharge the battery many times. The constant expansion and contraction of the lead plates helps the sulphate deposits break and dissolve.

    A lot of lead-acid batteries could be revived/lifetime extended by this method (+be kept working longer by checking on electrolyte liquid before it runs dry) . I read you can also use SODA WATER instead of distilled water. Anyone confirm/refute this? It's CRITICAL you re-charge with top caps OFF. I didn't know that the first time and a 12v motorcycle type battery "exploded". DON'T put batteries on chargers overnight. This is bad practice. Always charge batteries when you're able to regularly check on them. If you set fire to your house you can be dead from smoke inhalation within 5mins. Charge large HD lead acid batteries in your garage.

    Additives are not a good idea. In an industrial application acid adjustment can be done when the specific gravity stops appreciating from a charge cycle, but it's still not at the nameplate level. We use 1.400 sulfuric acid in that case, as much as needed to get it back to nameplate rating.

    No, do not add any acid to the battery. Adding acid is risky, you only have to add distilled water to the battery. Even if you add acid, you will have to add 38% concentration sulphuric acid, which is not available for normal consumers. Nobody adds acid to batteries. It is only distilled water that is added.

  • @Jaker788

    @Jaker788

    4 жыл бұрын

    You'll ruin the lifespan of the battery if you do that. In industrial battery recovery we do have 50% or 1.400 sulfuric acid barrels to acid adjust. We only use it after the specific gravity stops appreciating from a charge and it's still not at it's nameplate rating. The acid is used to replace what has been lost due to bad watering practice causing spillage on charge.

  • @Jaker788

    @Jaker788

    4 жыл бұрын

    If you drained the cells of electrolyte you'd lose all the acid and energy holding capacity. You're not gonna remove sediment unless you can pull the plates out, which is a bad idea. Epsom salt is awful for your battery, it's just going to add mineral buildup on the plates. Baking soda is going to give you a strong reaction with the acidic electrolyte and you're going to lose a lot of capacity by neutralizing the acid and add sediment and mineral buildup. What exactly do people think this stuff is going to do except ruin your battery. Just charge it and see if it reacts ok. There are industry standards to recover batteries. Manufacturers recover industrial batteries all the time to resell, they really have the best practice because they have lots of money to make from it. My job is recovering or repairing customer batteries and the same goes for scrap batteries turned in if they show promise for recovery.

    If they don't start gassing after 22 hrs of charging it may be that it's toast. Seriously don't add stuff to batteries, Epsom salt will do nothing but add minerals to build up on the plates and reduce usable plate surface area. It may have a lot of positive plate corrosion, lost a lot of acid in it's life, or it's so sulphated that there's no way to get any energy through the plates. Standard practice would be to spike it with 1.400 gravity acid to help with conductivity and prime that sulphate to come off and maybe convert back to sulfuric acid, don't do that though. If it's just a starter battery or small deep cycle, turn it in for $10 and buy a new one. Charging rules go like this, 16% of AH for amps in until it hits gassing voltage of 2.40 volts per cell. Ideally you'd have a constant voltage mode where you decrease the current as fast as you can but maintain that 2.40 volts per cell. Go down to 4.5% AH for finishing rate and stay there or below when it's at gassing voltage. Though you probably don't have a charger that can both do a custom size battery and keep charging as long as you want. This is just my advice from the industrial motive power space, I recover industrial lead acid batteries primarily, but also work on chargers, cell replacement, watering systems, palletizing scrap battery loads, or whatever else related.
