First of all, what is a partition? Well, it's kind of in the name. It's part of a hard drive. Essentially. It's just a piece of space that section off from the rest of it in order to be almost treated like a separate entity. So in other words, you can have multiple partitions on one drive and these can all be viewed through something like the Windows Disk Manager, for example.
So partitions can be created or removed pretty easily with the really any piece of disk management software are typically pretty hardy and well protected. However, they do have still the potential to become corrupted through something like user error or sudden power loss. And so pretty much anything that could affect an entire hard drive can potentially corrupt a partition.
And if that's the place that you find yourself in then you're going to need a pretty hefty piece of software in order to get your stuff back. Now a lot of software out there is pretty good at managing them right like moving them around creating them or moving them all that sort of thing, but not a whole lot of software is directly dedicated to target a partition with specific recovery algorithms that can allow you to get your files back.
Today we're going to be using a software called Disk Drill, which does a great job in restoring files from lost partitions. You can target a specific partition that you want on your hard drive and use all of its power targeted in that one area to give you the best chances of getting your files back from that partition alone.
Steps to recover data from a deleted or lost partition:
Step 1. We need to download and install partition recovery software (like Disk Drill), it is for both PC and Mac.
Note: We're trying to not overwrite the files. That's rule number one. So if the partition that you're trying to recover from his on your main Drive where your operating system is stored like your C drive, for example, if you're on Windows and you don't want to download Disk Drill to that same disk, and essentially what that means is you want to download it to something like an external hard drive or thumb drive or an SD card or something else besides the drive that you're trying to recover from that's really important.
Step 2. Launch Disk Drill after connecting any external devices that are required for the recovery. This would be an external device that had been accidentally formatted like a hard drive or SD card. After launching the program, select the device from which you want to recover a partition from the application’s disk list.
Step 3. And at this point we can start the scan. So go ahead and scroll down to logical volumes and find the partition that you want to scan then select it and choose. Choose your scanning method. So when it comes to scanning method, there are a few different options. There's quick scan. There's deep scan. There's all scanning methods which will run all of them in the precise order that disc drills deems appropriate and it really all depends on a couple things. Obviously the longer and deeper the scan the better your results will be but the more time it will take so for me. Once you've selected your scanning method go ahead and click - search for lost data.
Step 4. Preview the files that have been recovered by the tool. You can pause the scan at any point or let it run to completion. The program’s intuitive interface makes it easy to find files based on categories such as pictures, documents, and videos. Select the files you want to recover from a partition. In the case of a formatted partition, you may simply want to recover all of the files.
Step 5. Click the Recover button to begin the recovery from your partition. You will be prompted to choose a new storage location at which to save the recovered data. Again, do not use the device with the lost partition or you run the risk of corrupting the data you are trying to recover.

Hi there! We apologize for any confusion around that. Disk Drill Basic gives you all the functions of data protection and scanning so that you can see which files can be recovered by the premium version. Disk Drill Basic for Windows allows free recovery of 500MB of your file(s) (total size). If you're experiencing any issues with this, please email us at help@cleverfiles.com for further assistance.

I noticed how some of the items seemed to have the original names. I'm currently trying out a "trial" version on a external hard drive that is having issues, but its only showing things as what types of files they are and organizing as such. (Example: mp40001.mp4 inside "mp4" folder, which is inside "video" folder) im curious if I did something wrong to get such results.

Hi there! Sorry to hear about that. The only way to verify your files recoverability is to download Disk Drill Basic, run the scan, and preview the file(s) in question. If you managed to preview the file you needed to recover in a basic version, please email us at help@cleverfiles.com for further assistance. No preview just means that the file might be damaged or corrupt, it can be recovered, but it might need to be repaired.

The scan feature is nice and it didn't take toooo long to scan an entire 2TB drive and find all my files but you need to mention in the video that recovery over 500mb is a paid feature. Don't just leave that out. I can't criticize anyone for charging for software but be up front.

Hi i have a question. I accidentally deleted a partition and i tried to make a new volume out of it again because i thought it would recover the files but it did not. Thats why i deleted the partition again to run some data recovery on the unallocated part, I used EaseUs program but the partition it recovered is the partition that was deleted the second time and not yhe first and original partition, which basically doesnt contain my files. Can u answer this. And also, i did not put any file in it yet to avoid overwriting

I have a drive with primary windows partition, clean command used on the drive so all unallocated. Disk drill picks up lost partition, I want to recover all data but not old files, onlyive files that were on disk, the drive has not been used since the mistake. Problem I get is scans twice, and shows double of every file but not folders. How can I restore only latest files abd not copies (it adds a 1 on end) at recovery destination. I have used scan lost files. Scans twice although selected the lost partition. Should I stop scan before it gkes back to 1% on 2nd scan?

You don't have to format you drive, if you're happy with the current partitioning. Just copy the recovered files over to that disk.

The scan duration depends on many factors, including your Drive size and health, as well as your computer performance. If your Hard Drive has a hardware malfunction, including bad sectors, then this might be the reason Disk Drill is taking longer than expected to complete the scan.

So. There are some files still missing. But, after I pressed recover all, the files that was sent to another location, they were missing. I pressed preview, i saw the preview, but then, I cant find them. Names are changed (of course) but I went through many folders, and I dont see them. And then I also got like 1.81 TB of partition. So I guess I have to deep scan this? (thats the only option I got for this) And if I press those 3 dots, I can scan for lost data. Question is, what do I do from here?

I cloned my hard drive that had windows 10 on it -> over to a 240GB SSD. i did this so it has a faster boot up at the start. and i noticed that there was another drive in the computer that was labeled something like (F: Recovery) and it has 11.0GBs used out of 12. so i kept thinking to myself.. i want to delete this so i can get more GBs space on my SSD. so i downloaded a software in order to view my drives and delete that. and the F:Recovery drive didn’t permanently go away. it just went down to barely a GB of space. so i traded to see if i could merge it to my SSD .. and it didn’t work so i just left it there. Now i tried to shut off my computer and it refused to turn off. it just went to main menu again. so i turned it off by clicking my power supply switch. and now windows and my OS will not boot up. it gives me an error with a black screen saying (install a boot device and restart the computer). and nothing is working. even when i go into the BIOS to select the boot priority between my harddrive and SSD. what do i do?? please help me. i will pay you

Most likely you won't be able to recover the file structure, as it gets overwritten when you format a drive. You can still recover the files through. Please, scan you drive with the free version of Disk Drill to check.

I need data recovery in my deleted external hard drive during partitions data transfer from Windows computer to Apple MacBook that 4 TB WD Elements 25A3 Media HD that showed only 34 GB space with unknown folders, I don’t see any of my files. Also, How to Fix External Hard Drive Not Showing Up because of Partition Issues of my 4 TB external hard drive? What is your Recovery Cost Estimate? Are you charging if you couldn’t recover? A guy who transferred data from Windows computer to MacBook and erased via my HD wrote: “I did partition the drive before the process and I specified to the computer where on the drive I wanted to use but it was erased completely”. “no only the partition scheme was changed so it won't appear. download on the Mac app store the remote desktop client app from Apple”. And 2 technicians who tried to recover wrote: “So I've ran the scan 3 times. Unfortunately it looks like when the drive was formatted they used a secure format which intentionally erases old data. There are some files that I'm able to recover but it's nothing like what you were describing. It's like 20 picture, 20 documents and some other assorted files”

(I’m surprised you responded) The file might be to big to just bring back and act like nothing happened so what I’m doing is something I never thought of before I reset boot camp into my computer (MacOS) and when I see the apple and hear the noise I will hold command + r and it will scan the web. After that (a few minor details happen during that like it connects to internet and then it loads for 5 years) I will open device manager (or console or what ever it is I used windows for to long to remember what it’s called) and recover the disc. I hope this works and if it doesn’t I can just restart the computer again and try disc drill
