How to record samples using your phone on SPD-SX Pro
In this video, I'm going to show you how to record and install new sounds on the Roland SPD SX Pro using your phone, iPad, tablet, or any other device, including an electronic drum kit that can utilise a quarter-inch jack input.
There are a couple of things you're going to need in order to do this. You'll probably need a jack to mini jack adapter, such as a quarter-inch thread like a guitar lead to mini jack (3.5 mm) for your phone. Additionally, you'll need a standard aux lead (3.5 mm to 3.5 mm), like the one you use in your car. If your phone doesn't have a headphone input, you may need a mini jack to USB-C adapter. These adapters connect to your phone and to the quarter-inch jack adapter.
Before plugging in the lead, ensure the master volume is down, especially if your SPD SX Pro is connected to an amp. This prevents a loud pop sound when plugging in the lead. Once connected, turn the master volume up so that you can hear what's being recorded. Next, go to the menu, navigate to 'Wave,' then 'Sampling,' and set the record source to 'Input' rather than 'Pad,' since you're using the line input on the back. Leave the auto record trigger level as it is for now; this setting will automatically start recording when the device detects a certain volume level, ensuring a clean start to your recording.
Leave the record channel mode on mono and start with the record level at whatever setting it's on. There are additional settings for more gain if needed. Once everything is set, plug your phone in and get some sound going. You can monitor the audio through an amplifier or headphones to ensure you're recording is sounding the way you want it to. Lower the auto trigger level if needed to avoid cutting off the start of your recording.
Once the recording is done, save it to the sound bank on the SPD SX Pro.
To edit the recording, go to 'Wave Edit' to preview the waveform. You can trim any extra space using the value dial or hold shift to move faster through the waveform. Rename the recording as needed and save it, assigning it to a pad for easy access. Normalize the recording to match the volume of other sounds on the device and tag it for easy categorization.
If you encounter issues, such as not being able to preview or edit the sound, turn off the filter and preload settings to locate your recorded sounds. Once found, you can tag the recording appropriately. This process is the same whether you're using a phone, iPad, or Mac.
You can also use an electronic drum kit to record sounds. Simply connect the kit's output to the line input of the SPD SX Pro and set the level to start recording. Alternatively, use a multichannel direct-out setup with an audio interface for more control over individual drum sounds.
That's it for today! If you'd like to learn how to record loops on the SPD SX Pro, be sure to check out our other video. See you again on the channel soon! Bye for now.
