How To Record Foley
In our second foley episode of Sound 101, Andrew knocks out a scene from Night of the Living Dead with guidance from Jody at The Sync Tank! We start with a cue sheet and run through the whole scene: cloth pass, footsteps, props.
Check out the Sync Tank: thesynctank.com/
Zombie shuffling, going downstairs, knocking crowbars off the wall, and the body fall. We do it all! Foley artists of all levels will learn something from this episode as we cover the process of going through a scene, performing these sound effects and manipulating props to get what you need from them.
Microphone placement and mixing is also a part of foley - you need to know how to get your actions to sound right. Be sure to check out Jody’s perfect run-through of this scene at the end!

Awesome demo! Love the dainty flower approach!
Like color grading, audio is an art form that requires many years of experience to master it.

like every major part of making a movie.
I find Foley artistry fascinating
This was absolutely FASCINATING! That is such an art and an amazing talent. The end was cool - a great idea on taking a clip and using it to practice and hone the art. Then, just going to Jody and having her do it properly. :)

A foley challenge would be cool, I’m sure I can find some footage we could use.
Probably the best video on Foley that I've found online. I think it's great that you are showing how much of a difference it is having a seasoned pro vs a "first timer" recording foley on the same scene.
I hear my Re-Recording mixer when I watch this video. When I am in booth, I tend to often be either Dainty Flower or Bull in a China Shop!
This was really entertaining and informative. Loved it.
Wow what an art. Her finished product was amazing. So dynamic.
"This is not a plugin that you drop into a DAW. This is art." Me: Creating foley with Reformer Pro Plugin.
Loved this video. The environment, camerawork/editing, and the dynamic between the two just made me happy
Best. Video. Yet! Really great coverage and very informative. So cool to watch this.
So good. Possibly favorite episode ever.
Agreed with the presenter..... sound design is JUST as crucial, if not MORE so than the visuals and 3d and everything. Foley Artists are just pretty damn amazing :)
Incredible! What microphone you used?
This is beautiful!!! It really makes you think of all the work that works just in sound
Fascinating, educational, and humbling. Loved this video.
This big dogs are in the comments giving props. Salute to you 🫡
Expierience is everything in this job. Very nice.
I love doing foley, it’s so much fun.
INSANELY COOL AND FASCINATING
Highly underrated video. Great job!
Truly inspiring. Great demonstration...
This is extremely entertaining to watch!!!!
Really made me think about creating more sound effects for my content. Thanks as always.
This was an amaizing video!
NIce job Andrew I'm sure there were plenty of weightless dainty flowers when they first started doing foley. but you did a great job!
I love this video!!! Thank you!
Awesome!
Great episode 😁.
Starting from dropping the crowbar to the end sounds amazing.
Great content! Well done.
Great video. Loved the confused look on your face!
amazing content thank you guys
No wonder they give out Oscars for sound design😂. They deserve it!
Fascinating...
A Deity Microphone guy went to the Folley studio who used a Deity Mic to try to create the sound for a movie using their own mic.
Foley is such an interesting role to me. I want to get more involved with that as I move up in my career
What the hell, This masterpiece is so underrated :(
inspiring
Fantastic demonstration of the art of Foley. Got to ask! Why is there a random hand grenade sitting in a box with the hammers and pick head!! (6:25)
Super cool content :) Right now I am recording Foley for my new shortfilm. I have learned a lot on this channel in terms of recording and mixing. Thanks for this. But there is one thing i am not sure about and that are the levels of foley recording. How loud should foley be while recording?
Well done! I must say your youtube channel is one of my top favorites :) microphones, sound design, foley, tips and tricks.. all great stuff. Technical question - do you know maybe the model of that wireless headphones used in foley session?

@@DeityMicrophones Nice one! Thank you very much! : )
i think foley is something that you don't notice when it's done right (so it doesn't get the credit it deserves).. but when it's done poorly or not there at all, it's painful.
Curious what the go-to foley mic is for Sync Tank?
What is the brand of headphones that you use? Thanks in advance!
Really cool video! During the cloth pass which wireless headphones are they using? thanks!

Can you use a lav mic to record foley?
@DeityMicrophones
2 жыл бұрын
you could, but most lavs are omnidirectional and would pick up a lot of the room you are in. more directional mics (supercardioid and lobar) are preferred for foley.

@@DeityMicrophones I see. It's just I have a Sony ECM 77B condenser lav mic and i was hoping i could use it for foley ): Thank you though.
i think the footsteps are too light (also the engineer could have arranged them after recording to match up better), and why didn't they record a sound for him stumbling through the door? The door should have like a swing/crashing sound.

Actually telling someone you're nervous and having them walk you through is a very good tactic. It involves the other person, makes them nicer to you and lessens the burden on you and provides you with emotional support. You can tell he was really nervous so when ppl are going to notice them why not involve them? Try it sometime. You will find ppl will be nicer to you
