The absolute most cringe I've ever experienced from an anime recommend is one of the guys I knew from high school going "Oh dude this show's amazing, you should totally watch it!" and I was like sure I'll give it a go, so he put Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha on the living room TV in front of me and his four housemates. Within a couple minutes, the nine year old main character was completely naked with nipples drawn and the camera focusing on her chest, hips and butt for a transformation sequence, and all five of us just turned to him as one and went "What the fuck are you showing us"

Best way to recommend something whether its anime or anything else is to know the person your talking to's taste and give a few sentence elevator pitch specifically around what you think they would like, then just leave them to it. Everyone is much less likely to enjoy something they feel pushed into so leaving it in their court without being pushy is a big plus since they can check it out on their own time or ask you if you want to watch it then.

Minh is definitely the kind of anime fan who keeps up with the newest hotness, since he's watching stuff like Oshi no Ko right now and recommended Haruhi at the time. It makes a lot of sense why he pushed Haruhi because nearly ALL anime fans who keep up by seasons saw it while Woolie seems pretty out of the loop with anime outside of the few big series he got into like Attack on Titan and Jojo and it wasn't in his tastes in the first place. Anime discussion moves fast and there are simply those who keep up with the latest stuff and those who stick to what they know they enjoy. Also side note: Kamen Rider OOO is fantastic and that's always a great recommendation for anyone looking to get into Kamen Rider.

Imagine the opposite, your high school friends come over for a hangout and as the night is getting late they spot your Blockbuster rental sitting by the TV. They ask, "You got a movie there?" but you tell them its like the 5 or 6th DVD for an anime series called Neon Genesis Evangelion. Talking it up enough gets them curious enough to go, "Hey, if you haven't watched it yet you should put it on." thinking they've got enough context to see if the show is good. And then we start up Episode 24. Except there are no cool robots, no deadly angel battles, no sci-fi tech. There's just 15 minutes of two boys bonding with homosexual subtext, and the whole time my friends are asking me why we're watching gay anime. I attempt to try and tell them its not usually like this, but the episode just gets more and more overt in its homoeroticism. By the time the episode is over, my friends are confused, uncomfortable, and unsure of why they watched a mech pilot hold his perhaps gay lover to classical music for what felt like an eternity before decapitating him. I had no answers, and it wasn't until months later that we were able to laugh about it.

You know, I watched Haruhi and enjoyed it pretty casually, and now I'm wondering if having sought it out on my own instead of having someone personally try to show it to me was the right call lol. I did have a friend try to show me evangelian as a kid and they were acting as if it was the greatest thing ever but I also didn't really watch anime at all yet at the time so I just didn't like it at all lol.

I remember one of my friends really pushing Log Horizon on me, and I kept refusing for whatever reason, might have just been selling it wrong. I finally relented by saying he needed to watch Terraformars in exchange. I'm about 99% sure I got the better end of that deal, seeing as I ended up bringing through Season one before he even started the first episode. He eventually finished it and appreciated it for the same reason I did...because it's audacious and terrible, but with some kino fight scenes. Ironically, I think it's those same qualities that made him not want to try Jojo, fan screeching notwithstanding. Man, Haruhi was so aggressively mid, looking back, despite how much influence it had on productions to this day. I still see SOL shows that do band insert OPs in current year.

Man I showed my group Gurren Laggan a while back and they all loved it like I thought they would but I was so nervous the whole time because a couple months prior to that another aquintance showed the group Kill La Kill, which is NOT the anime to show a group of people who don’t watch anime first. Shit got awkward real quick. You’ve got to ease them into the horniness of most anime’s slowly, even Yoko in Gurren Laggan was a bit much for that sometimes lol.

So I just left this to watch episode 0 of this. I don't know what Woolie was talking about it was amazing. I love how it just opens cold with no context and the cracks show immediately. Terrible acting combined with a language barrier is peak viewing experience, I almost feel like I should have turned off subtitles. Excited to watch the rest of it, if I can figure out broadcast order, as intended.

my recommendations are always via text cus the receiver can always choose to ignore it and the awkwardness is avoided. If they find it interesting then they can reply with their excitement and I can steer them towards the more exciting parts.

When a friend of mine just randomly handed me the pirate dvd with the entire thing out of order it distressed me so much it pushed me to read the first 2 novels on a fan scanlation site and never look back I don't even know why I wanted to be a fan of the series in the first place but nowadays I don't really feel nostalgia for it

The omnipresence of Haruhi in the 2000s is the main thing that kept me from watching Haruhi. I'm pretty open to try almost everything but there was something to the way people obsessed over that show that put me off from even trying to find out if it was any good.
