How to reclaim a weedy garden | The Impatient Gardener

Sometimes the weeds beat you to your own garden and the situation seems hopeless. But don't despair! It happens to all gardeners, and it happened to me this year, while I was busy doing other things in the garden. Here's how I tackle a really weedy part of the garden and save plants from being smothered by weeds.
It's not perfect but if you can just do a little bit your garden will live to fight another day!
(And here's yet another video showing the ugly bits of my garden; real life isn't always pretty!)

    I know this video is 5 years right now, but thank you for this video. Part technique but mostly just encouragement. I've been suffering from depression most of my life and the last two years I've really neglected my yard. Im paying the price and slowly working on getting out some of the worst kinds of weeds that keep reseeding. I have made a lot of progress but every time i go out there, there is still so much to do and I've had very little time to do it. I really want to get some nice garden beds going but need to get things cleaned up before I can even plant. Its so bad... I think i just needed that extra reminder that what I'm doing is working and is worth it and i just need to keep plugging away.

    I've neglected mine for the past two years as well to to situational depression. Now I just feel overwhelmed. I did go out and prune my lilac today and planted a couple of flowers that I bought. Keeping the living things alive helps to keep me alive. You take care.

Plan to get some veggie seeds started this weekend. At the same time weeded the edges of yard and up keeping my yard. I will keep updating this post. I battle the weeds, like you. I did a bed and placed cardboard down, then mulch on top . I got a year plus with no weeds and when they did start to grow back, they were so easy to pull out. I'm trying to do this with each bed but I'm older and slower. Cardboard can be a bit unwieldy and it takes time to pull off all the plastic tape. I'm trying the construction paper painters use to protect floors when they paint. I cut it up in the house and lay it down as I mulch, sometimes throwing topsoil on it before mulching to cover it more fully.

    I had really good luck with cardboard in my last garden which I am going to replicate here in my new garden. Yeah, mulching over top every year helps immensely and it becomes less work overall. In small spaces or around plants I use several layers of wet newspaper or packing paper - works the same. Sometimes I will layer compost over the grass and shorn weeds before laying over the cardboard or paper. It all eventually breaks down and is incorporated into the soil so it never gets too thick.

    This is a really great illustration of just why it's so important to plant ground-cover plants throughout the garden. While spacing your specimen plants is the traditional way of doing things and looks "right" to our eye, it leaves a ton of open ground for weeds to get a footing. Even with bark mulch on the ground, weeds will find a way to fill that empty space because nature abhors a vacuum. In the back of the property where all that sun's shining, think about planting native grasses like Panicum and Andropogon. Wildflowers like Echinacea and any of the Milkweeds also take up space and are tall enough that they crowd out the weeds. Under the trees where you don't get much light, there are a hundred native Carex species that would not only look great, but would cover the bare ground and help build the environment. Carex woodii and Carex pensylvanica are the top two contenders, but you could also try C.sprangelli or C.plantagenia or C.haydenii if you wanted a powerful statement piece that really sets things off.

  • @threeriversforge1997

    @threeriversforge1997

    @@louisethomas8074 It's not about crowding out dandelion, though. There are a bazillion plants that we don't want growing there, not just dandelions. Seeds need sunlight and soil temperatures to germinate. Putting a decorative plant in the ground will necessarily take up space that the weeds can't use, and they'll also shade/cool the soil so seeds that get blown into the bed are less likely to germinate. It's not a guarantee, but it's better than nothing!

The mosquitoes are big enough to saddle and ride, and I have been tackling my many gardens one at a time and laugh when I start one because I know a lesser seasoned gardner would just go let's poison the lot and start again. So, I totally agree when you encourage people to not give up. Weather and life can just create situations from time to time in gardening and if you enjoy it just go with the flow.

    I notice you mentioned the astringent quality of the jewelweed you had pulled. Also the chickweed you mentioned has healing properties. Even though they're weeds there always seems to be an upside :) It's hard work pulling them. I get the jewelweeds which are brought in by the critters that visit at night. Here in the South, Jewelweed is often found growing in areas where poison ivy is also found. The astringent she mentioned, is used to counteract the exposure. Just break the stems and rub it on your hands first, then break more stems and rub it over the skin that was touched by poison ivy.

    I have nearly the same problem at the backyard of our purchased property. Unfortunately this simple method doesn`t work effectively. I have spent a lot of time and physical effort to take them away using a garden fork to get the soil loose. However, after a couple of rains in about a few weeks - the land is full of weeds again and they`re growing too fast. In a month they could be over 1 metre tall... The problem is- we can`t see what is underneath. But there is a full "roots cities" there. We can do nothing until destroy it. It needs to be dug and all the root system must be removed and destroyed. And would be better to cut all the top soil level and tip it, because there are plenty of capillary style roots which will be growing ones we have them left in a soil... It`s a serious fighting. Not just a one action unfortunately... Or, an appropriate chemicals might be used for weeds controlling...

    1. Not all weeds are good for the environment. Invasive species overrun the native plants that our native bees and wildlife rely on. 2. If you want to garden, you have to manage weeds. So the choice here is garden or don’t. I want to garden here. By doing so I have created a diverse ecosystem full of insects and wildlife. The two are not mutually exclusive.
