    Clint hightower, I was actually giving up on my 5a engine I'm only 26 i love my Toyota Corolla, and i dont want to sell it i want to keep it as long as life last because its a reliable vehicle, but after watching this video you inspired me tbh. My 5a engine burnt headgasket the other night while driving home so i just got the engine overaul at the same time, it was burning the oil badly in compression out of compression, cost me a lot because I use a lot of compression tbh. Your video just saved my life Sir thank you, love from Jamaica. 🇯🇲

    Letting the silicone cure a little before tightening is great for maybe a diff cover but precision mating surfaces typically require you to assemble and torque within 5 minutes. And you don’t have to use so much silicone because the surfaces are so precise 90% of the silicone will squeeze out externally and internally and sometimes break free and suck up onto the oil sump. As long as you prep the surface well you will have an excellent seal

    Oh god, despite how weird this sounds, the engine sounds sooo attractive at the end. I have a 93 Corolla DX, which runs the same engine, and I plan on doing a rebuild in the future. 218k and still running great. Great acceleration after all these miles and still gives me butterflies in my stomach when I drive it a little mean through town. I wonder how ferocious it will sound after a much needed rebuild. Thank you so much for putting this information out here. I also love your combination of professional and backyard tactics, such as the diction you use to explain everything, yet the little things like the bungie cord holding the timing belt. Made my night. Cheers!

    I WOULD RECOMMEND, KEEPING THE RODS IN ORDER & INSTALL THEM ONTO THE NEW PISTONS IN THE SAME DIRECTION BUT, THE MOST IMPORTANT PART IS, THE SECOND U HEAT & EXTRACT THE WRIST PIN, I WOULD IMMIDIATLY PRESS THE NEW WRIST PIN N2 ITS NEW PISTON & THE ROD, WHILE THE ROD IS STILL HOT SO, YOU DONT HAVE TO HEAT IT TWICE!!! IT WEAKENS THE METAL & FATIGUES IT!!! CAREFULL NOT TO OVERHEAT THE ROD! IF IT GETS CHERRY RED HOT, ITS OVERHEATED! SO THE SECOND YOU REMOVE THE WRIST PIN, GET THE ROD INTO IT'S NEW PISTON & PRESS THE NEW WRIST PIN INTO PLACE & THERE ARE ALLIGNMENT TIPS FOR THE WRIST PINS AS WELL. STILL, ALL IN ALL, GREAT VIDEO!!! TEACHING & SPREADING KNOWLEDGE & SELF SUFFICIENCY!

    Awesome video. It really helped me through my build. I do have a couple things though: first, the “installation marks” you used are actually the timing marks. The installation marks are actually the other dots on the gears. (I have the shop manual but prefer to watch how it’s done in lieu of reading about it.) Secondly, personal opinion, take it as that, don’t turn the crank backwards, especially when setting timing. You always want to go in the direction of engine rotation. Otherwise, I loved it. It helped me a lot.

    Best video for 7AGE. Just bought a 7AGE 1.8L Celica with 300,000K miles on it for $1500.00... =D The engine still sound like it even at that kind of mileage... But it does eat oil a bit. Lady I bought it from have put Penn High Mileage 5W30. The cap ask for 10W30. I will change it to Val 10W30 high mileage later and if 10W40 is needed. I can't say anything bad for the 7AGE motor so far. Run good and pick up speed very well with out any hesitating. Very smooth but the engine get noisy pass 3K RPM at 65 MPH... Right now I need to change the thermostat on it due to the temp. reading. Seem like there no thermostat in it or seem stuck open... =D

    +mongyaj Sounds like you got a good engine. Oil consumption on these cars is usually the valve seals. If you are not ready to do the valve seals, put some AT-205 reseal in it available on Amazon, it really works if there is enough seal material left. I've done some personal testing of it and it works well. give it about 6 weeks and you should see less oil consumption and or smoke.

    For cars that have an oil dipstick, I have been thinking about designing an oil changer pump that will be like nothing else on the planet and will have the following features: 1. Of course you will not have to jack up the car as the oil will be extracted through dipstick hole. 2. Unlike other extractors on the market , this unit will not require a. An air compressor to operate b. Manual pumping to create suction c. The user to dump the oil, it is pumped directly into the recycle container 3. This unit is very small and easy to handle 4. Made in USA of machined aluminum NOT plastic 5. Can extract warm oil in 2-5 minutes depending on vehicle capacity 6. Does not require a battery, operates on your car’s 12 volt battery 7. Costs less than some people pay for an oil change 8. Anyone can easily use it from teens to non-mechanical persons to the elderly 9. Allows you to change your oil without jacking up your car in as little as 5 minutes. 10. Looks Awesome I billet aluminum or anodized blue Would you be interested in such a device? If enough people are interested I will engineer one like nothing currently in existence. Let me know.

    Clint Hightower as very interested I am in that invention..I feel like once you invent it, it wont be as fun to change the oil but then again, it would make it easier and more simpler for youngsters-mechanics to use as you had informed. Then again, as it is a device, of course we'd have the option of getting it or not for our car so it would be really cool for people I think. I know my neices and sister would definitely do it themselves if you designed it.

    +Engineerboy 100 Too many people try to put a price on knowledge like this rather than pass it on. This was a totally in depth tutorial....even to the point of buying junk yard parts to show what you blocked with your back after you reviewed the video. Awesome job, don't let the haters get you down. Keep up the good work...my experience is only in SBChevy and when I searched to consider rebuilding my sons 7afe I came across this. It's nice to see someone passing experience along, Thanks again.

    an in situ job is the best way to spoil the result. one of the key to a successful job is the cleaniness of all the component involved in an engine rebuilding an an accurate measurement of all wear surfaces. plus in a transverse engine, seals are more subject to catch road debris as dirt and ropes and start leaking almost as soon you return the engine in service. I had to reopen an engine for a leaking head gasket caused by a debris entrapped between the head gasket and the head. I also had to accept a comeback because honing dust shot one main bearing now, never I do an in situ job more involved than removing a head or an oil pan, never on the reciprocating components

    I see you did this in the car without removing the crankshaft from the block. I would like to see a full overhaul with the engine out, the placing of the main caps, the orientation of the pistons, the torques and sequences of the main bearings, etc. It seems no one else has created such a video on KZread either. I work on the '90 era Toyotas - the ones that get 30+ mpg without the blizzard of computer tricks and sensors that so easily fail on the newer ones.

    Caleb Sandersier Yep have for years, works great and never had a problem. I torque to 22 ft-lbs with torque wrench then do two 90 degree additional turns. My final 90 degree verys as I use the actual 90 as a reference combined with matching how tight the bolt feels with the "stretch" feel I get so they all match.

    +Engineerboy 100 Exactly. Don't ever rely 100% on a torque value. Always use your brain and stop tightening if something feels like you're going too far! I have had people on my channel comment that they broke bolts (head bolts or cam sprocket bolts!!!) because they misunderstood the directions. Don't be blinded by the instructions! :-)

    I bought new bolts. Whole set was only 18 bucks. When comparing new and old bolts, my old ones were longer by about 1-2 threads. Stretched. Perhaps because I used an MLS gasket, the new TTY bolts were required. All I know is, car is still running about 5,000 miles on it since new HG. Check my vid if you haven't seen it..

    Has anyone ever heard of a cleanse overhaul? Performed through the spark-plug holes, without the rebuild. The spark-plug is removed, then the bore/cylinder are sprayed/gunked/brushed/vacuumed through the spark-plug hole.

  • @Engineerboy100

    @Engineerboy100

    6 жыл бұрын

    Not exactly what I've seen. The overhaul is done by changing the valve seals by removing the the camshafts and changing the seals by removing the lifters and using a tool to remove and replace the seals. the cylinder is pressurized with compressed air or rope is put into the cylinder through the spark plug hole to keep the valves from falling into the cylinder. ... that said, I do NOT recommend the process.

  • @jv-iq9uz

    @jv-iq9uz

    6 жыл бұрын

    Thanks for the reply, I just thought it would be more convenient. We have engine knock issues right now, and an overhaul is a really expensive option at this time. I thought it might be less time-consuming, and less expensive.

  • @Engineerboy100

    @Engineerboy100

    6 жыл бұрын

    If you have a knock, and it is actually something loose like a rod, there is no additive that will fix that. When you say "knock" what kind of knock is important too, a knock fix could be something as simple and better quality fuel or adjusting or freeing up a stuck lifter or it could be a failed crank bearing and you could need to replace bearings, rods or even the crankshaft itself. The best thing to do is find out what kind of knock you're dealing with.

  • @jv-iq9uz

    @jv-iq9uz

    6 жыл бұрын

    Thanks for the info, I didn't realize there were other probable types of knocks. I assumed, with the loss of power after the engine heats, that it was an engine knock issue. The engine won't pick up even with the accelerator all the way down sometimes. It just knocks and runs at the same pace. I thought it might be a lifter too, but the loss of power just doesn't seem like a lifter issue.

    Great video. Was fun and informative to watch. I have a 91 corolla 1.6 4afe that has been leaking some oil into the coolant for awhile. I guess it could only be the head gasket. I am currently attempting to pull the head myself and replace the gasket. Is there any reference you would recommend to help me in this job, or do you have any suggestions or knowledge of any unexpected circumstances I may run into. I have never pulled a head before, but have done a lot of more basic maintenance on my fleet of cars before. Thanks.

  • @Engineerboy100

    @Engineerboy100

    The main thing is follow shop manual instructions as to what position to have your camshafts before taking them off. Then make sure you loosen the bolts that hold down the camshafts a little at a time. The springs on the lifters are very strong and the camshafts are very brittle. If you loosen the mount bolts all at once, the force of the springs will snap the camshafts. I would suggest you have the head checked for flatness, if is not flat , your head gasket will fail again. ... have the head leak tested and have the valve seals replaced. Good luck.
