Hi Austin. Nice video. In regards the torque spec for those bolts, you're right - Toyota don't seem to encourage pulling them apart and thus don't mention a torque spec for those bolts. Now, Toyota does have a STANDARD BOLT TORQUE manual. These bolts have no marking and are therefore 4T class. For a 14mm, Class 4T bolt with 1.5mm thread pitch, the torque spec is 55 ft-lb or 74 Nm.

Although I haven’t had to buy any new calipers. I’m sure you saved yourself a bunch of money by rebuilding those calipers. I’ve got a 2002 Tacoma that may need that some day. And if it does I’ll definitely get new seals and rebuild. Thank you for the great video.

Wow, really interesting. These calipers look almost exactly like Girling calipers USSR licensed for Moskvich cars (except that it has big/small pistons being independent). Now I seem to know where I can get spare pistons for mine :)

ever seen that chrome chip off the pistons? Also noticed that not all pistons have the lip. Reybestos does, carlson doesn't, iirc

niceee !!!! what setup you have to blast them ??? I trying to get a compressor and a blaster but I don't wanna expend a lot of money just to blast small parts like the calipers

I have Raybestos WK 1770 Seal and Boot Kit and now try to install it on a new cylinder (I'm rebuilding the calipers). Which way that rubber boot goes to the cylinder (you can flip it over both sides). When it is on the cylinder which side of the boot is up? There is one on which there are some numbers printed on the surface of it (15, 3100, in very small print). So when installed on the cylinder, should these numbers be visible, or it should be opposite side on the top? Thank you for the film.

Which kit did you use from Rock Auto? I've ordered two kits already Carlson 15132 and Centric 143.44031. Both kit's square seals seem to be slightly too small on the ID the piston will not go past it, even with a C clamp trying to push in. When compared to the OEM square seal its definitely a little smaller. Thank you!!

Let's say, hypothetically speaking of course, someone were to brake a caliper mounting bolt..... is it possible to take the caliper apart with it still on the rotor?

Might be easier to drill out the old bolt. Extractors are expensive.

Hey Austin how’s it going? I have a question for you I hope you can help me. You know more about these trucks than anyone. I have a 1994 Toyota extended cab DLX 4WD (with locking hubs) and it has a 3VZ-E 3.0 EFI and a automatic transmission. I want to upgrade the disc brakes from factory single piston calipers to dual piston calipers and upgrade the plain rotors to drilled and slotted rotors. I am the original owner and I bought it new in 1994. I had a shop convert the rear drum brakes to disc but they are single piston calipers also. Do you know where I can get the 2 piston calipers and drilled and slotted rotors? I have done research until my eyes are crossed and can’t find any. If you could help me I’d be SO appreciative and will definitely make a major merchandise purchase from you. Thanks for any help!!!!

Hey! So someone converted the rear to disc and you want to upgrade calipers in the rear? The fronts should be 2 piston stock!

@@austinniemela Hey Austin, thanks for the reply, right, the front calipers are 2 piston stock. I want to upgrade those rotors to drilled and slotted rotors. The rear converted drum to disc conversion I had done back in 1995 are single piston with plain rotors like the stock front rotors. I want to upgrade the rears to 2 piston calipers with drilled and slotted rotors. Also the stock proportioning valve is some weird weight compensating proportioning valve mounted on the rear portion of the frame. I want to install an adjustable proportioning valve near the master cylinder so I can adjust the rear calipers because I noticed that my rear discs aren’t being used at all when I brake.

Yeah my calipers so fuckin fucked it’s like those bolts you said Toyota didn’t have a spec for I think ther specification for that bolt is have the fuckin hulk do it

Never split your callipers. The bolts are factory tightened past yield and are not serviceable. Reuse of the bolts runs the very real risk that your calliper will split in two during an emergency brake.
