How To Rebuild a Leaking Motorcycle/ATV Fuel Petcock Valve

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Fuel Petcock Rebuild | www.rockymountainatvmc.com/Sa...
A leaking fuel valve is one of the most common issues seen on any used motorcycle or ATV. Not only can leaking fuel be dangerous and messy, but it can also shorten your ride by drastically reducing fuel mileage. Luckily, a rebuild kit is an easy and cost effective way to get the fuel petcock back to normal operation. In this video, Charles shows how to rebuild a manual fuel petcock valve commonly seen on carbureted motorcycles and ATVs.

Just notice on a Yamaha grizzly. I turned it the wrong way when it was on and it started leaking. So when it was on and I turned it more on it leaked a lot but when back to normal it stopped. Is that common or that means something wrong ?

when i removed the fuel line the brass sleeve came out of the valve, is there a epoxy that i should coat it with before pushing it back in or should i just replace the whole valve

On my atv when the petcock is on "fuel" no gas flows to the carb. It only flows to the carb on "res". I just replaced the petcock & still the same. Would you happen to know the problem?

Sounds like you just have a low fuel level. The “reserve” doesn’t actually tap a reserve tank. It just takes fuel from a lower point in the tank. If you run out of fuel for the On position you switch to Reserve and keep going.

My petcock was leaking gas to the carb even when it was in off position so I took it apart and tried making a new gasket out of cork screw, but still no difference. Fuel will flow into the line and down to the carb even when it is in off position. What else could be wrong? I noticed at the bottom at the sink or filter whatever it's called there is a small gap between the net and the pipe, could that affect it in this way? Or is that net only for filtering the fuel and shouldn't affect the fact that it never shuts off the fuel? I have a non vacuum operated petcock.

@@berenschulbeck9718 Thanks, I am still trying to figure out a way. I was thinking of if it would be possible to block one or more of the holes and just keep one for the flow of fuel and hopefully at least one of the other positions will be closing the flow, but I just don't know what material to use or how to plug the holes. I read somewhere on the net that if the cover plate is tightened too much it could put too much pressure on the gasket making it not work properly but I am not sure. If I could find a new gasket in rubber maybe that would work better. I'll post an update at here in case I get it to work, but maybe I'll be forced to get either a new petcock or make a solution by adding an ordinary on/off switch controller after the non functioning petcock by just cutting the hose between petcock and carb and installing a simple type on/off petcock in the same style as of those in lawnmowers. It wouldn't look good but at least it would be possible to stop the flow of the fuel. At least a temporary solution to get the bike running again, or if all else fails I could perhaps get some kind of vice grip that adds force to the hose and stops the flow after the petcock, just be careful to not press the hose too hard to create any injury to it.

@@berenschulbeck9718 I tried another method today by blocking the passage to the reserve tank with a half moon shaped piece of cork that I cut out, it actually stopped the flow throughout the petcock when adding just a little fuel, I did not however add much fuel enough for it to reach up to the normal tank stick, but in theory it might work. I didn't have enough fuel at home to try it but I'll see if I can get it done some other day. The downside to this was that there was some small debree in the fuel that seems to have broken off from the cork so it's not optimal, a rubber gasket would be better.

@@LUNARIAproject I installed a secondary on/off valve such as the one you described being on lawnmowers and it seems to work just fine, if that isn't as appealing as other alternatives I suppose you could just buy a new gasket that is linked on this video.

@@berenschulbeck9718 Good to hear! I ordered a new cheap petcock and will see if it will fit otherwise I'll get a lawnmower petcock too. Let's hope it will work. :)
