How To Rebuild A Cadillac Power Antenna

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

After testing out a Cadillac power antenna core Josh was able to find on the shelf, he decided to rebuild the unit. He will show you how to take apart and rebuild a 1961-1964 Cadillac antenna with the parts necessary, including the mast. Typically, these antenna units just need to be cleaned up and lubricated before installation. Using the step-by-step process laid out in this video, this job is pretty straightforward if you plan on rebuilding your own antenna. This procedure covers most Cadillac models from the late 50s to the 60s. Enjoy!

    Glad you liked the video Charles! No secret methods at Caddy Daddy. We even show how to rebuild parts we sell as rebuilt for those that want keep their car as original as possible. I have damaged or destroyed parts when figuring out some of these jobs so you guys don't have to. The antennas are pretty easy, but some items are very difficult to figure out a repair or rebuild process. Luckily we have a lot of cores to work with and I always try to experiment on damaged parts (bad corrosion or cracks for example) that have no value. Josh

    This sounds like a short to ground in either the antenna or cable. Using an ohmmeter at the antenna check that the center pin of the connector is not grounded. If it checks good, then disconnect the cable at the radio and connect it to the antenna and make the same test. If there is a short, then the problem is in the cable or something being displaced at the antenna when it is connected. If at the antenna the center pin is shorted to the ground, then check that the antenna mast is not making contact with any metal. Josh

    Nice video! How much more work to replace the two lead wires? Would be nice to have new wires instead of 50+ year old wires. especially since they are in engine compartment, by the passenger exhaust. Are they soldered on? Could you demo replacing wires too as a pt 2 to video? :) Thanks

    The wires are simply soldered to a terminal strip under the motor cover. The job can easily be done.

    Just following up as I rebuilt my NOS antenna. It was very slow and getting stuck after install. Removed and followed instructions and worked great. On mine just had a spring/washer nut, not a double nut. I also did not cut the NOS cable :), just removed, then re-fished it through after lubing using step in video. Also, I noticed the nut position showed exactly one thread, so reassembled the same vs counting turns. Did not remove three pins. Also, each gear had a tiny washer. The old grease was hard in some spots, even though was NOS from around the 70s. Thanks!

    Mine runs fine, extends all the way out, but doesn't retract the last 6 inches of mast. Does that mean that the clutch plate is too loose then, or is it likely just old grease?

  • @Caddydaddy

    @Caddydaddy

    2 жыл бұрын

    It is likely the grease is all dried up and there may be corrosion on the mast. You can clean it up and see if that fixes the issue.

    Why is it when I screw in the antenna bracket that holds the wire from the radio I lose the antenna?

  • @Caddydaddy

    @Caddydaddy

    When the screws are tight, something is shorting out. Check the center pin of the connector and be sure the proper screws are used. Those two are very short and if they are too long will touch the antenna mast and short it to the ground. Josh
