How to REALLY fix a Whirlpool Duet WFW9600 washer. With a F35 and SUDS error code.

Replace the TWO green Capacitors on this CCU. One is on the extension board, the other is on the main board. - THIS IS THE PROBLEM PEOPLE, It's not your Analog Pressure Sensor. The capacitors are likely going "in and out" of service, and eventually they go totally out. Replace both green 2200uf 10v Capacitors. You can't mistake which ones they are, because they are labeled clearly.

    We purchased the Duets around 2008-2009 and average a minimum of 3 loads of laundry per day, every day. So on one hand, I think we got our money's worth from the washer/dryer and have been pleased with the performance. About 6 months ago, we started seeing the SUDS/F35 errors intermittently and they became more and more regular. We DO NOT use too much detergent (hE and only about 1 TBS per load). Your video and information made sense. Since I have done a lot of board-level repair in the past and had the tools, I ordered the new caps. When I removed the circuit board from the machine, I was actually a little disappointed that the factory caps were not bulging at the top, a sure sign of them being bad. But I figured for only a few bucks and a little time, they were worth replacing anyway. Unfortunately, they did not fix the issue. In fact, after replacement, the errors happened EVERY load instead of sporadically. I broke down and purchased the analog pressure switch and that did fix the problem. So my advice is to others is to look at the caps first. If they are bulging at the top, replace them. If not, then the easier bet would be to check/clean the black hose that connects to the APS and if that doesn't work, then replace the APS, especially if you do not have any electronics experience. But before doing either of these options, do check the drain screen. That is the easiest and least expensive item to check/correct first. Good luck! I'm pleased that without a service call, I spent $85 total on a machine that looks new inside and out, but has done thousands upon thousands of loads of wash over 6+ years and seems to continue to go on strong. However, based on all the internet buzz and APS failures, I think that this part should had been a manufacturer recall. FWIW, I purchased the Whirlpool factory part from Amazon (Parts4sale) with free shipping and it arrived in 3 days without priority shipping.

    This $2 fix worked perfectly! Thank you so much for the video! De-soldering the bad capacitors was a pain though, I don't know what metal they use for the solder, but my cheap-O 30W iron would not melt it for the life of me! Ended up using brute force to tore off the old capacitor and solder the new ones to the left-over studs, haha. Ugly but to my amazement, it worked! Even put back the old analog pressure switch I had replaced as a first attempt, and everything still works! Thanks a lot!

    Never comment on these things but this really worked! $4 in parts some time with a friend who knew how to solder and presto! Very simple - probably the hardest part was getting the CPU housing out of frame - be patient. The 16V Capacitor I used was a little larger but I made it fit. Brilliant!

    Thanks, Jarred! 2 x 43 cents for the capacitors. My local appliance store wanted $350 to replace the APS in my 2009 WFW9500. We weren't going to sink that kind of dough into a 7 yo machine. So my wife agreed to let me try Jarred's recommendation. I'm a 65-yo desk jockey with arthritic fingers and limited skills, even had to go out and buy a soldering iron. The solders look awful, but it all works!

    This worked for our machine. It was giving us the F35 error. When I took it apart to access the CCU, I could see the two capacitors were bulging out at the top. Bought 5 16V replacements, but had a VERY hard time desoldering the old ones. Eventually I got them out, but I'm surprised I didn't damage the board. Replaced the caps, put everything back together, ran the self test, and our washing machine was fixed! Thank you so much for the video (and all the comments). I never could have diagnosed the problem, but I was able to fix it!

    I want to THANK YOU SO MUCH for doing this video!!!! All I can say is HOLY SHIT! I tried checking everything from every other video that has been posted to youtube!. I pulled my CCU and saw that the CCU had bad caps and I knew what bad caps looked like from dealing with other stuff. Not trying to knock you but you could have done a little better explaining the capacitors and why they fail,etc along with removing the CCU stuff... But I cannot complain as IMO you saved me a shit ton of money! In total this repair cost me about 30 bucks... I spent maybe 10 on ordering caps from amazon. I did have help from a resource to remove and resolder the connections since my solder gun was so old I was having issues melting the solder so I gave the dude a 20 gift card to amazon. My washer now works PERFECT! In the end THANK YOU for doing this video I wish you nothing but the best for helping me and others :)

Went to local computer store, bought the capacitors and plugged them in... you saved me 200 bucks cause I was about to buy a whole new ccu! Hardest part was figuring out how to slide the ccu out, once I slide it towards the back of the unit it came right out though. Thanks again!

    Changing the capacitors is not necessarily the problem. I started with the cheapest fix first. Checked the hose for leaks by immersing in water and blowing through it, still F35. Cleaned the pressure chamber at the other end of the hose from the APS, still F35. Changed out the capacitors for $10, still the F35 code. Bought an OEM pressure switch off of ebay for $80 and now it’s fixed and working great.

    Thanks Jarred ,your video just saved me I would guess 3 or 4 hundred dollars by not having to call a repairman(tech). I also had the f35 and sud codes which led me to believe it was the aps per another video so I went and bought one also.Then for some reason I decided to keep watching another video which happened to be yours and ordered the capacitors from Amazon. Well to my surprise everything seems to be on the slow boat from China. So I went and ordered th capacitors off ebay 10 for $6.85, w/ free shipping, got here in 2 days, so decided to try the capacitors while waiting for the aps. And lo and behold it fixed the problem. Don't need the 85.00 aps after all, but will have plenty of left over parts for the next times it breaks down. Thanks again for your very informative video. Regards. Dan

    Excellent sleuthing. I hope that someone from Whirlpool got this memo, because I have no doubt that many people have been turned off to Whirlpool washing machines because of this very problem and Whirlpool's inability/unwillingness to solve it. (Their "solution" was to tell people to use less detergent, which accomplished nothing apart from leaving one's laundry dirtier.)

Put it all back together with the old pressure switch and it now works great. thanks for the video. Even with wasting $ on non returnable pressure switch I'm way ahead of the cost of a service call and retail prices of CCU and pressure switch. probably $600 for a repair man to just swap expensive parts.

    This was the 2nd time I had the F35 Suds indication.. the new pressure switch did not help this time. Thank you for your video it was just the information I needed. I had to be careful when desoldering I pulled up one of the circuit leads leading to the capacitor and had to reconnect it to the board.Replaced with 2200uf16v as you recommended.... Really the hardest part was getting the CCU off the side of the washer.. and hooking up the wiring harness after all done..Im hero to my wife, but I know the credit goes to you. Thanks again.... Being a player/collector of vintage guitar amps, first thing I do when I get an amp is to update the electrolytic caps, so when I came upon this video the cause identification made perfect sense to me and I knew it would be a cheap fix. So far so good, but as someone suggested, increasing the voltage rating on the caps is probably a good idea. My ebay purchase was of 4 caps so if these go bad i can just pop in the second pair and order some higher voltage units. However the recommended nichicons are pretty good, have used them before in my guitar amps, and likely will hold up better than the originals

    Jarred, you are correct... I found the same root cause on my Duet 2 years ago, after trying new pressure sensors. The issue is the capacitors fail, causing ripple in the power supply to the pressure sensor, which then causes the pressure sensor to give bad readings. You may find a different pressure sensor 'fixes' the issue, it's really just that some sensors may be more tolerant to supply noise. Whirlpool is costing customers a lot of money due to some cheap 50 cent capacitors they used in their design.

    Hey, just a note, the two specific capacitors to replace are the two green 2200uf 10v capacitors. DO NOT replace them part for part. Get a 16volt 2200uf capacitor. The cheap ones they installed in this unit were also not "high temp" but should have been. The new ones should be rated "high temp". The ones I bought are made by "Nichicon" - and to ease installing these, I bought a "desoldering" iron, as for circuit board work, they are way easier to negotiate the solder on nice and clean like the factory. Order the caps (capacitors) on Amazon (2200uf 16v Nichicon) get three or four in case you break one. (They cost a couple bucks each) Happy Fixing!

    Question: What do (y’all) think could be the cause of this problem coming back a couple weeks after a successful fix? I replaced the 2 capacitors. It turned out the pressure sensor wasn’t working either & replaced that too. Washer went back to functioning normal. A couple weeks later the SUD/f35 error is back & the machine won’t go through a cycle. The only explanation I have seen is over/mis-use of detergents, but I really don’t think that’s the issue in this case. Any feedback would be appreciated.

    Looking at caps isn't exactly the best way to judge if the caps are any good. Many are replacing caps regardless of appearance and the issue goes away. The caps themselves are not "smoothing" the electric current out and that produces a f35 code. I recommend replacing the caps as the manufacturers supplied caps are very poor quality

    Okay, breathe. It's easier than it seems. The unit slides onto the metal frame, then snaps into place once a small clip of plastic falls into the hole on the metal frame locking it into place. You'll need to depress the plastic snap back & out of the way and then slide the ccu off the frame. Something very flat and blade-like will do, but take your time with it. Once you push that plastic out of the way, it's a breeze.

    Is there any way to test, such as with a multimeter, to confirm if the capacitors are bad, or conversely, if the APS is bad? My soldering/electronics skills are not super great, and I'd like to verify that the APS is indeed OK before I attempt to replace caps on the CCU. It's unfortunately not clear, from what I can tell, what pin is what on the APS connector, so I am not quite sure what to probe if I were to attempt a continuity test.

    PersistentNitrogen No need to test. It's bad on ALL units. Just replace the capacitors and you'll be on your way.

    Thanks, Jarred. Our 9 yr old washer (coincidentally, a Whirlpool Duet) died. I picked up this exact washer you are working with on Craigslist for $100 - 4 yrs old, and looks brand new. I pulled the CCU - bulging capacitors. I'll replace on Saturday, and am confident I'll be good to go. I can pick up 2200μF 25V 105° locally - will 25V be OK?

    Yes, as capacitors go, the most important thing is to match the uf rating exactly. The cap could be a 50v but not any higher than 2200uf

    I've been battling the F35 error for a while and am just now forcing myself to deal with it. I've ordered a pair of the 2200uf 16v capacitors and they will be here tomorrow. Seems easy enough. BUT - I don't have a SUDS error. Only the F35. Do your instructions apply to situations when it's only F35?

    ***** Jarred Johnson Adam - I sort of replaced them. My problem is that my Duet Dryer has a F70 code and my washer has the F35 code. I found Jarred's fix for the washer and went to town. Ordered the capacitors off Amazon, received them, pulled the board, managed to get the capacitors swapped out and just to be sure checked back to this page for info on diagnostic mode. That's when I discovered that I'd installed Jarred's F35 washer fix on my F70 Dryer problem. Ouch. I actually put a pair of 2200uf / 16v caps in place of a pair of 22uf / 250v caps. So at this moment I'm placing an online order at Mouser for 3 each of both types (spares ordered because they are under $1 each). I'm very hopeful that I can get the washer fixed when the caps come in. The dryer (F70) is a different issue. I'm looking on the web for a Jarred style fix that can help me avoid purchasing an expensive board.

    ***** Another quick note. No luck at Radio Shack finding either Cap. BUT, they did have a nice solder sucker (fully integrated iron with sucker) for just $15. I haven't tried it yet, but bought it.

    IF you can find 2200uf caps in any voltage higher than 16v, they can be used for this project. Radio shack may have some that can be used, but the most important detail is the UFArad measurement.

    Jarred, I was getting the F35 error and switched out the two capacitors in question with the ones recommended by you and had them installed at a local electronics store. After I put the CCU back I had a successful diagnostic test, but the first time we actually tried to use the machine I got a suds error which I had never had followed by the F35. Any ideas?

  • @jarredjohnson3486

    @jarredjohnson3486

    Todd Hmmmm. I would reset the machine by unplugging it, and plugging it back in (waiting like 20-30 secs) - Do the diagnostic again, and then immediately start a load on normal, nothing fancy. Watch it for a few moments to make sure it starts out okay. Once it goes for at least 5 minutes, it should be okay. From that point, make sure all connections, wires, and the capacitors are getting good contact. Use a volt meter for continuity.

    Jarred Johnson Hey Jarred, A successful diagnostic test last night after unplugging the machine for about 2 minutes, but "suds" error as soon as my wife tried a normal load tonight. I do not have a volt meter and to be honest I would not know what to look for if I did. Seems like I would not have a successful diagnostic test if my connections, wires, and capacitors were not getting good contact...clearly this is not my area of expertise so I may need to just call in an "expert". I also checked the drain for the drum as was suggested in another video, but it was pretty clean. Thanks.

  • @jarredjohnson3486

    @jarredjohnson3486

    Have you actually examined the device that puts out the "suds" error message? It's a small black overflow meter in the back right corner, hooked to a small black rubber tube. Take the tube off of the overflow meter and blow in it. If anything is in that line, it might cause the suds error (if actually the machine was over-sudsing)

  • @todd7986

    @todd7986

    Jarred Johnson I haven't checked the overflow meter. The "suds" error occurs within a minute of starting the machine and had never been a problem in the past.
