How to Read REAL ไทย Thai Handwriting - Deciphering the Strokes

In this video, we dive into real life, no holds barred THAI HANDWRITING, using a real-life specimen ... one of many daily shopping lists I get before I shoot out the door of a morning. You'll see the stark contrast between textbook Thai and the handwriting we encounter in everyday life. I'll guide you through how to decipher letter shapes, breaking down what might initially seem like an illegible jumble of squiggles into understandable strokes.
We'll check out the historical influences of the Khom script on modern Thai handwriting, examining the unique angles and flows that characterise authentic writing styles and get those angles and rhythms into your own muscles. Using special handwriting templates created on my Remarkable tablet, I'll demonstrate practical exercises to help you master these styles and integrate them into your own writing.
I hope the clip will get you buzzed and confident about reading and writing Thai as it's genuinely used. Whether you're a beginner or have some experience, you'll find hopefully valuable tips to enhance your Thai literacy skills.

My mom is the same. (pharmacist) We usually tell her to come and read her own handwriting (happen a lot when I was a kid when she write essay and have me type it down), and she sometimes doesn't know what she wrote! lol My dad have better handwriting when he put his mind to it. This example is too nice of a handwriting.

Hi Stuart, you just blew my mind ! I'm just beginning to write Thai and finding it hard enough to remember all these strange new symbols, vowels and tone marks. I've recently started asking my Thai wife to write a new word I am learning in her handwriting, and as you've demonstrated here it's illegible to me and so different from the text books. Factor in all the different fonts, and you have to ask yourself if you are ever going to master this impossible language. Thanks for the video, I'm looking forward to watching more of your stuff, even if it did make me cry !

I don't know any Thai (although I've bought your book last week). I still watched this because the process you went through was interesting, and I see this problem in myself with Chinese. I can read "normal" fonts without much difficulty, but stylised fonts and especially handwriting are all mostly just gibberish to me, and I'm sure it's just because I haven't yet built up the muscle memory by practising writing myself and then seeing how that changes when I speed up - mostly because my writing is still at the stage where it's slow because I'm always consciously trying to remember the strokes and make it correct. If it's any consolation for others with this problem, the reverse is often true - a lot of my Chinese friends have beautiful handwriting in English, far far neater than I've ever written myself, but they completely fail to understand handwritten lecture notes or whatever, because apart from their own writing, they have only seen printed writing, or things written by language teachers who always make an effort to write things legibly.

It’s really interesting how Thai handwriting has changed over the generations. Even though I’m native but still struggle to read my parents’ handwriting. My mom’s easier to read since she does accounting work, but my dad’s way more cool so I was trying to have handwriting like him in someday. At the end of the day, my handwriting has nothing similar to both of them, but it’s still considered to be a beautiful and readable writing among native friends. It looks like the TH Sarabun font as I have to use to write most of the formal Thai paragraphs. By simplifying alphabet heads, angles and adding some cursives, my handwriting becomes thinner, rounder, and has less spacing. The downside is I easily get hand cramps in a shorter while because of the very small handwriting, and my ‘ธ’ I write in the full name often seem confused as ‘ฮ‘

Other obstacles in reading Thai : (ideas for more videos ?) (1) the use of อักษรย่อ / acronyms , even for everyday words Like for example ปญอ when meaning ปัญญาอ่อน (2) the use of English words, transliterated in Thai. For many words it makes sense to use English transliterated to Thai, but it has spread beyond that. For example เฟล for "fail" Extra difficulty may come from incorrect transliteration. For example : สตรีม meaning steam Or ห้องชาร์ป (3) and of course the intentional misspellings for "rude" words. Even mixing Thai and English letters. Etc...

The "head" BTW, is usually omitted in Thai handwriting. Historically, Thai script was invented for carving. The round head was the starting point. But in the modern day, it is just there to make some letters different like ก, ภ, ถ. The little notches are unconsciously there but usually make the angles more visible and help it easier to read. Without the notches, the handwriting would look like a lot of circles. Someone wrote that way too.

Sometimes when we came across the extremely hard to read handwriting (mine is 😆), I think native Thai can recognise the word from the whole set of its comprised alphabets and vowels. For longer notes and story writing, context and vocabulary also helps identify or best guess what the heck that handwriting is. 😂

I'm dyslexic and not great with IT; however, I managed some of these. I struggle to use my phone typing Thai because I didn't learn how to spell properly with the tone rules. The same for my knowledge of Khmer. Do you have a strategy for dyslexics. I want to regain my Thai and Khmer reading and writing ability but not sure how to manage it in small chunks

If you are going to learn the Thai alphabet. You will definitely encounter it. You should know the "Sao Ching Cha" font. You will find it most often in Bangkok. Because BMA uses it to set standards for design. Current messages in Bangkok And it will help you a lot when you see signs in Bangkok. or even the name of the agency you need to contact in Bangkok. 😂

แบบนี้ คนแก่ๆจะพูด "ลายมือหวัดอย่างกับตัวหนังสือขอม ใครจะไปอ่านออก" Acceptable in real life but will be punished in the Thai class. Interestingly, how this complaint by the elders imply. That's means evolution or transforming of writing from Khom to Thai made it easier to write or inscript . โชคดีที่ไม่อ่านคำสุดท้ายว่า "งาบ-ด"

    ถ้าเข้าใจ Pattern กับบริบท ก็อ่านได้ไม่ยาก เช่น ข บ ม น ย เวลาเขียนหวัดๆ มันจะเขียนคล้ายกัน แต่ถ้าเข้าใจบริบทกับสระประกอบ ก็จะรู้เองว่าที่แท้จริงคือพยัญชนะตัวไหน
