Thanks for the video I had an AC man tell me my compressor was dead I needed a new unit. I told him I wanted him to OHM test like you did suddenly he claimed his meter was broken. I asked him how he knew my compressor had failed he said it won't start I told him could be the capacitor. He said didn't have the part and left. I called another tech he came out I told him what this other guy said he did the ohm test, and my compressor was good the cap was bad replaced the cap and it worked. So many crooked AC guys here in Phoenix they know in the summer you do anything to get that AC turned back on.

Actually, the evaporative coil is what gets clogged with dust more than the condenser coil. People put those highly restrictive filters on so dust is sucked in from the attic through leaks in the duct work goes into your evaporative coil. It's easy to clean the dust a I use one of those pumps with distilled water washes the dust right out.

Will be the same on a three phase compressor . For example all three pins may be 3 ohms. The compressor depicted here was a single phase compressor and that is how the pins ohm out on a single phase.

Great info. Thank you. I do have a quick question though: My heat pump's compressor reads as follows (at the unit itself): C+R = 1.0. C+S = 1.2 R+S= ONLY 1.4 when it seems that it should add up to 2.2 based your example. Does this mean I have a potential problem with my compressor?

What if I get a different but consistent ohm reading after different power cycles. For example I get 5 Ohms between all 3 measuring poles (S-C, C-R, R-S), power on, power off, read again and get 14.5 Ohms between all 3 measuring poles, power on, power off, and get 56 Ohms between all 3 measuring poles. Is the compressor broken? Should it always read the same resistance or can it vary as long as they always read the same value?

My refrigerator (Samsung RS277ACRS/XAA-0000) stopped working after a power outage. The ohm readings on the compressor are: C-S: 0.4 ohm C-R: 3.4 ohm I was wondering if such a low reading on the start winding is normal for this model. The Start Relay (thermistor, DA35-00135A) was not showing continuity (R = 1300 ohms), so I replaced it. The new one couldn't start the compressor either. When I test the new one, it also does not have continuity (R = 4000 ohms). I do no know if I got a bad start relay, or my compressor is bad, and the by pulling too much current burns the start relays. The overload protector has continuity, and seems to be fine.

The compressor could be cool down with water. What if you ohm it out and the reading show good. You turned on and the compressor overheat again and it shut off due to an thermal overload? Could it be that the high pressure switch could be bad? They are normally closed.

Does the decrease in the resistance value between the common terminal and the start terminal imply that the compressor is malfunctioning? Example, the resistance between the common & start is 1 while the resistance between the common & the run is 1.3 (resistance total between run & start is 2.3). Noting that the compressor needs a start capacitor to make it running. Without that start capacitor, the compressor cannot work. So, two questions are here: 1. Do these resistance values indicate an issue with the compressor? 2. Does this need of start capacitor to start the compressor indicate that there is an issue with the compressor? Thanks
