How to Read Books Without Owning Them | Ep 1: No Bookshelves

This is a new video series where I'll be exploring how to read when you don't have easy access to bookshelves or books! In this first episode I'll explain how I'm moving with books and handling the lack of bookshelves and space. I'll also be sharing all the books that I'm moving with me on my person (the rest will be in storage). Future episodes will focus on sourcing books (primarily for free). My goal in these videos is to explore the variety of ways we can read without owning any (or maybe just a few) books. Thanks for watching! #booktube

I love the new spot! Very calming! When I moved from Illinois to Florida I donated all my books except for signed favorites. I also donated all my bookshelves. I love bookshelves on homes, but if I have shelves I hoard books. I just can’t handle or control myself. lol. I can’t read physical books anymore because of vision issues, so it would really just be for collecting. I love this idea!! Access to the library is soo helpful! 💖📚☕️😊🌈

Congratulations on officially getting moved even though I know you'll have to do a smaller move later on. Still very exciting to be taking a new step in life! Cool idea for a series and it will pose some interesting challenges, I'm sure. Glad to hear you will be utilizing the library! Awesome video!

Thanks! And yes, we have multiple stages to this move. We've done the big move out with the little move next door, then we do the big move into temp housing, and then we'll eventually do a small local move into permanent housing and get everything back. So, 1/3 of the way through stage 1!

I enjoyed seeing the books that you are taking with you, and the strategies that you have going forward. When we downsized over two years ago now, I had to give away 90% (about 3,000 books) of my library. I have an e-reader which I use 99% of the time now. I had to think long and hard about which books to move with me, and which ones to give away. I am so thankful for my e-reader, because I have been able to replace many of the books I gave away. I know a lot of people are against e-readers, but it has been the perfect fit for me.

Excellent video, and very important to remind us of the fact that we don't need to be buying books to enjoy reading them. I used to be so good at using the library but have fallen out of that habit. I need to remedy that, for sure!

Ask every library if they have a state card and/or any big city cards. I'm in Ohio and have a statewide card in addition to my County card. Also, the same kind librarian shared CLE (Cleveland) library is available to certain counties. And ask about Libby & Hoopla. The same librarian helped me sign up. I went from 1 typical library card to 3 & Hoopla and Libby.

In South Texas there are a lot of Winter Texans. Some communities make allowances for nonresidents. I have 3 cards from Houston/Harris County area. The others are from Nueces County and Hidalgo County(in Rio Grande Valley) I got these cards online and sent a picture of my drivers license. I use Libby for ebooks and audiobooks. I haven’t actually been inside libraries.

Several years ago I had less than 10 unread books on my shelf. I would read a few and then swap them out at the nearest little free library. It worked very well for me. I read books that I wouldn’t have known about otherwise.

Hello, this is extremely relevant to me - in temporary housing and no books due to house fire! I've been using the library heavily and pillaging Little Free Libraries. I've bought a few, of course, and I love the idea of a banker's box to limit it. I wonder if I'm close to filling one yet? I think I'll drop off a lot of books in those same Little Free Libraries when it's time to move back to our house.

  • @noteworthyfiction

A lot! So far, I would recommend the following: Must read- The Mystery of Edwin Drood, The Moonstone (by Wilkie Collins), Our Mutual Friend, Bleak House. All of these are either spoiled and/or heavily referenced in Drood. Should read- (because they're mentioned frequently) The Woman in White, Armadale, at least one or two other Charles Dickens (just to get his a sense of his style). I read- The Moonstone, The Mystery of Edwin Drood, The Woman in White, The Moonstone, Armadale, No Name, David Copperfield, and Oliver Twist.
