It's a good idea to have a road atlas as long as it is up to date. I threw my old atlas out because it was outdated.

Just ordered the 2022 version of this atlas. I’m going to keep it in my car for emergencies. Their has been times where my car and phone gps would stop working, it sucks when that happens.

Great video, I’ve had gps fail on me a lot, one day I was only ~20 minutes from home but didn’t know the area (always used gps and didn’t go there often), and it took me an embarrassingly long time to find a place with Wi-Fi to get google maps to wake up. I lived in a very urbanized suburb too, reception was normally fine but crapped out for some reason. A road atlas and physical maps should be part of drivers Ed imo. Also, the atlas doesn’t track, report, and record your location history like your phone does, which is nice, lol.

With a dedicated GPS device, you don't have to worry about spotty connection like with Google Maps on your phone. Though I do agree with having an atlas or paper map as a backup. Because your devices can also be lost, broken, and/or stolen. I have a Rand McNally and an atlas for my home state tucked between my center console and seat at all times.

My largest concern is if the tech fails. I've been a diehard Garmin user since 2005, and in all that time I've only seen the GPS grid fail once (it was for less than a day) back in the late 2000's, so it's a proven tech that works - but - if my Garmin fails, I have the HERE WeGo smartphone app (same map data as the Garmin and stores map data to the phone, data not required when traveling). If the Garmin *and* the phone fails, I have the paper map. I still keep that map because it uses no electronics. If the tech just decides not to work, having a paper map is better than nothing.

Believe it or not GPS is bad for your brain. Not like waves mess it up, more like you don't use your brain enough.

@@Krullerized True, but that claim can bur used for a lot of things. I try to just use GPS as a navigational aid and not completely relying on it. I still pay attention to all the signs to verify where I'm at and where I'm going, especially through cities. So for me, the GPS is like having a navigator in the passenger seat.

@@Krullerized not true at all. In my personal experience once I drive a road with my gps I tend to not use my gps again to that location because I’ve been on that road before and know how to get to so called location. You tend to pay attention more when your going somewhere new.

Honestly I have no idea how to read a road map. If I had to use that only I would be on an episode of Unsolved Mysteries as somebody who just disappeared and was never seen or heard from again. Thank God my truck is equipped with GPS.

I just got my license and I always want to be prepared for the worst. I’ve got a car jumper, a window breaker and seatbelt cutter, a swiss army knife, a multitool, a boy scout survival book, a lighter, some cash and an atlas obviously. Anything I’m missing?😁

It sounds like you've got an amazing kit, I'm taking notes on what I'm currently missing! I recommend keeping some bottled water on hand as well and, if you need to maintain your blood sugar or just feel a bit fancy, a nutrient dense snack that will stay good for a long time, like trail mix bars. Even if you never have to use them to survive in an emergency, not once have I ever regretted having a snack and drink handy while stuck in standstill traffic on blazing summer days

As the other commenter said, water is key. The other thing I find very handy is a flashlight, with hook and magnet. Useful when you're staring down at a hood trying to jump someone's car at night. A first aid kit and fire extinguisher can provide some peace of mind.
