I was just using a sewing machine today. This guy makes it look easy to stitch in consistent and straight lines, but I can tell you from my own experience that it takes real SKILL to do this. This was amazing craftsmanship in action; awesome! Thanks you John Hunt for sharing your valuable skills with us.

After watching this video god knows how many times , I always swear I’m going to try this and get a proper machine. But I don’t. So after thinking about it for another minute I went to the fabric mart and bought a few yards of black vinyl pleather and some upholstery thread and needles and got to sewing by hand. It doesn’t take nearly as long as you might imagine and allows you to limit mistakes. I did pleats stitched from behind instead of diamonds and used black piping. All the stitching is done from the backside and is hidden. You just need to go fairly straight. Did it in a week’s worth of evening’s while I listened to music and podcasts. Just took my time and was lazy as possible about it. If you look at the construction of the factory upholstery ,it has been designed to be ingeniously simple and straight forward. I ended up using the curved type of needle that worked way better than the straight ones for getting through tough layers. There’s a little finger blood on the batting in a few places though.

You sure will with that approach. Instead, why not try visualising the end (what you want as the outcome) in mind before your start, then plan the steps (follow the video), take your time, don't get angry, take your time, breathe, keep positive thoughts it is going to work out really well, stay in that mindset until you're finished. Then see how it turns out. Possibly better to try on a seat you don't need for your car. IOW, buy one from the wreckers to practice on first.

Skilled craftspeople always make it look easy. It takes years of practice to understand the technicalities of working with different materials and knowing how they respond when worked with, also joining two pieces of any fabric isn't always as easy as you'd think.

Of course it's not easy. It's a trade 'skill' that needs to be learnt. That takes ability' dedication and time to perfect. To me this is the minimum standard. Imagine if that seat also had eyelets like those classic, Italian 60's sports cars. There are also those Edwardian button upholstered seats you might find in horse drawn carriages or vintage cars. A time served competent upholterer can't pick and choose. He/she's got to be able to do those too!

That turned out amazing. I need to redo the rear seats in my E24 since buying replacements (especially the black ones) is difficult and/or VERY expensive. I've been (slowly) changing out the tan interior in my E24 for black, started with black Vader seats from a late 90s model M3, trying to change/paint/fix the trim along the way, and still need to do the rear seats... This has been the last few years now. Question for you, what sewing machine are you using, I bought a really tough one a while back (very old model) that I made the terrible mistake to take apart to clean and paint and will never take apart another sewing machine again, but when I get the money to get another I would like to know a good one that will be strong enough to do upholstery work like yours does. Thanks.

Hi John. This is really nice work and you make it look easy. I guess that's the mark of a pro. I have a leather seat bolster that needs replacing. I was thinking of going with a high grade synthetic leather material. I have a regular sewing machine. I just have a few questions that maybe you could answer. Will it be considerably cheaper if I take off the leather from the seat or is it just worth to take the whole seat to the upholsterer? Or, given that I've never done this before, and that I have just a regular sewing machine, do you think a layman could do a reasonable job themselves? I know I'm asking without giving you any details but just asking in general.

I know this is a 4 month old comment, but in reply to this, I did my own seat bolster repair a few months back with a non industrial machine and the correct needle. It did the job spot on, but you need to stitch slowly so the motor on the machine can deal with the thickness of the leather. I am a mechanic and total novice on a sewing machine but with time & patience the repair came out looking very professional. Definitely something you can have a go at DIY, and if all else fails and its no good, you can take everything to an upholsterer, nothing much to lose apart from a bit of your time and some material. Good luck!

As a sewer, I would recommend you get some scrap fabric like an old sheet or get a queen/king size sheet from the thrift store to practice cutting out your pieces and sewing them together correctly before trying it on your statement fabric. And make sure that you have the correct needle that can handle thick leather and thread that’s strong enough to hold for some time.

after watching this video, i thought if that guy can do it so can i. t took my seats out and used them for patterns. then bought leather. yes an upgrade. only about 800.00 then i borrowed my friends pfaff 1245. it needed work. i sent it out to be fixed. 500.00 later it worked perfect. then my fiend took it back and loaned it to his nabour who wanted to use it for his boat seats. i was bummed!!! then i my mom's good sewimg machine to give it a go. after a week of trial and error. i understood the machine wasnt made for this stuff. so i went to the junk yard and bought a nice set of used seats. they looked amazing. i sold the truck for a huge profit!!! true story. lmao

Industrial sewing machine, t95 thread with Size 18 needle, 1/4 inch scrim foam if your doing vinyl or leather, scissor that are for upholstery. Regular scissors will not cut good. A good size table to trace and cut your patterns on. If your first starting extra vinyl and scrim foam because if your like me just trying first you will go thru material. Main thing PATIENCE.

Hello. Awesome video. I would like to do exactly what you just did to my seat's & was looking at videos to gauge wether or not I could indeed even do it prior to purchasing everything. Although you made it look easy this video has convinced me that I would be incapable of properly getting my seats to look half as good as those. I still want to get them done though, so I was curious if you could give me an educated guess on how much I could expect to shell out to have exactly what you did in this video done? How much did you charge for that job if you don't mind me asking?

Great video. Tailor here trying to now get into carseat upholstery. Will be using your video. Was wondering, what are the specific names of the two other materials you used besides the leather? The padding and the material used for the piping? Also, I will be using vinyl instead of leather to practice. Is vinyl decent for this job?
