I just bought a betta. I have a 5 gallon tank. I have had my fish for two days now and decided to do a ph, NO2, NO3, KH, and GH test. My NO2, NO3, and PH levels were fine for tropical fish according to the instructions, but, my GH level was 1.7 when it should be 3.4 and my KH level was 0 when it should be 4.5. Please help. I am new to this whole fish thing and I want the best for my betta

I know this is a long time ago buut I've asked Soo many people and still no response back and your just cool calm and collected with facts.... I could've just overstocked the tank plants, decor, fish etc.. If ANYONE who is experienced/know anything, please help... The MOST detailed information about what's going on is..... I had a Molly die today... Buuut I'll REALLY try to make a loong story short PLEASE if you ACTUALLY read these.... I feel I've done everything right with days and days of watching/reading etc... 5 month 60 gallon tall tank like yours same thing etc 21 fish total of them community tank 6 bottom feeders with the 21... Soo EVERYTHING waas fine for months then I ONLY added two Water Wistera plants and then next day power outage happened for 20 minutes then went back on clouded the tank I have an intake sponge that held the debris etc.. theen boom ammonia spike from 0-0.5 to literally 6-8ppm DANGER!!! Every fish still has been ok except that one Molly that was (having trouble since first got him) anywho did 50% WC 2 days later 40% WC 2 days later 20% still everythings fine except ammonia?? Theen did an 70-80% WC and this WHOLE week did 10% every other day to nooot take out literally all my beneficial bacteria that waas left added Fritz-Zywme turbo start the beginning of this week said 0 ammonia and 0 nitrites next day back to ONLY danger level of ammonia.... Nooow my KH and pH levels are down.... But fluval 70HOB gravel substrate and 4 Water Wistera plants and Lucky Bamboo with 6 Vines of Pothos Plant hanging in the back opening it up just a lil more for the reasoning of your video more evaporated water and yes for the best part of Pothos.... Thaats EVERYTHING I can think of to tell you and hopefully ANYONE who is willing to read this and PLEASE PLEASE please lmk what I did wrong??? Please.... Should shake tube and mix completely. Not just look at the bottom. If that were the case you wouldn’t need 5ml of water.

Thanks for the explanation and the video. I am using my reverse osmosis water filter under my zinc to fill my aquarium. They are no minerals, and the pH is 6. I have a question: why we need to increase the pH and the KH and not just the pH? Thanks

KH influences pH. There are mineral mixes on the market to add to RO water. The mix I use raises 1 part KH for 4 parts GH because I target a pH of about 6.5.

Ok so what did you use to raise your pH levels

You just used one teaspoon in 5 gallon which made 4 drops to make yellow. Why use 3/4 teaspoon in 5 gallon. I dont get it. But thanks kindly for the information. Sure gave me the idea how to do it right now to my GH

If you have soft water then Don't use seachen regulators to stabilize PH. It stabiles PH by using up magnesium an calcium that plants need (if you have planted tank) also it has phosphate which can cause algae. Use seachems alkaline/acid buffers. It has no phosphates. Also seachem has a chart to show you the ratio of how much to add to get desire PH. And keep it at that PH.

Seachem Equilibrium does not contain phosphates. It contains mostly potash in soluble form(K2O), calcium and magnesium.

@@urbansk8r231 oh great! I just added neutral regulator to my tank about 20 minutes ago. I haven’t tested my water for hardness yet as I just moved into my new house but at my previous house we had very hard water, so I know my current water is on the opposite spectrum.

after adding baking soda to the "moving" water you have to wait like 24 hours to get a real reading on the KH, not that fast like it shows here

That is incorrect. Baking soda immediately dissolves in water causing a near instant KH pH boost.

My pH has been around 7 in my 20 gallon until I added some aquarium safe (meaning I didn’t find it out on a beach somewhere) driftwood. Ever since then it’s been just a little above 6. How do people keep driftwood in their aquariums if it makes the pH take a nose dive? I’ve been adding Seachem’s pH Neutral Regulator and it brings it up to about 6.6 even though it says it will bring it to 7. By the next day it’s down to hovering right above 6 again. I don’t like all these pH fluctuations and I know my poor fish probably don’t either. I don’t want to keep messing with my tank because every time I do about a 25% water change, it brings back a bacterial bloom. My tank is about 3 months old. Help! My tank is being temperamental!

Driftwood releases tannic acid over time which is what's causing your pH to drop, you need some sort of KH buffer in your tank or filter in order to neutralise the acid and stabilise your pH. I'm literally in the same boat and it's driving me mad but that's what Ive learnt so far. I'm planning on adding some crushed coral to my filter in order to raise my kH Baking soda raises pH but only temporarily, if you have no KH in your water the acid will continue to lower your pH back down to 6

Can anyone help me find a guide for Low KH(kh is 0ppms) and high GH(150ppms)

Suddenly reminded of my titration lessons.

My tap water is about 7.8 ph. But my planted tanks get as low as 6 with virtually no kh and high gh. It drives me crazy. I’m trying to figure out how to raise my kh and keep it stable. Luckily I have hardy fish minis my Otos and Nerites- both parished in my tanks.

My GH is 6, and my KH is 10. I need to lower the KH and raise the GH.

Ya lost me LMAO... get a fish they said... they are so easy to care for they said.....ugh

You can't go over 8.4 with bicarb of soda.

I have ultra high tap water ph 8.8 average 6-8 kh and almost 0 gh . I’ve never seen that before and the problem is I can’t lower ph every time I do it shoots right up to 8.2 again . Might try crushed coral to raise kh and gh then ph down to lower the ph

Well i did test my water but my fish died litterally over night after a hard rain. Never really knew why. I lost 8 koi. So sad!

lee jing if tds goes up use r/0 water or distilled 15% water change add 1 whole gallon of distilled should lower tds since distilled starts flat should not increase kh gh drastically and always drip water added to tank if it involves chemicals because water perimeters could change and harm your fish.

my ph is like 6 out the tap so imagining it drop way lower over time

I just bought a ranchu and I keep him in a 29 gallon with no other fish and I have an aquaclear 70 with good nitrite and ph levels but my little ranchu just sits in the corner of the tank and sometimes comes up to eat but spends most of his time at the bottom, since you know way more about goldfish than me I was wondering if you can figure out what's wrong with him

+delta oranda hmm that's odd. Are his fins clamped? He could be just stressed from moving. If he still acts the same in a week, then it could be because he is sick.

Buzzcargo Perhaps change the flow rate/direction. Changing or adding to the aquascape may perk it up, or cause it to become curious of it's surroundings.

Also, by this point you should not have any nitrites. It's the nitrates that you need to monitor. If you are still reading nitrites, your cycle has not finished, or are not giving the bacteria enough load.

delta oranda, I just came across your comment while listening to this video. How is your fish doing? It may be too late but a great “old school tip” would be to toss a Wonder Shell in your tank. It will help buffer Ph while also slowly releasing calcium, which will raise your Gh and Kh. Gold fish appreciate some hardness and can survive in high concentrations of dissolved solids. Ammonia and to a lesser extent, elevated Nitrates will cause stress behavior too, similar behavior as you are describing.

My tap water PH is @ 7. Gh and Kh both are @ 0. How do I raise both Gh and Kh without changing the PH?

Erika Blub blub The fishes are doing just fine but they are maybe under stress. Doing water change won’t help since my tap kh and gh are both at zero like I said. I need to find a way to raise kh and gh without changing much of the ph if that’s even possible.

@@SonNguyen-jx7cy Oh right. I didn't read the word 'tap' .. I thought it was your aquarium water. sorry. I use products (powders) to raise the GH/KH. You can also use crushed coral. Whatever you do, do it slowly so it doesn't stress the fish even more/let your ph fluctuate too much. You can use the products in the video too, but add slowly over several days and keep testing. Good luck.

Raise the KH to atleast 3 dKH (preferably 4) .... ..Because anytime pH may crash down due to building up of Nitrate ..!! Rest you probably know how to raise and how much of reagents you need for that.

My water is the same, very soft and not stable. So to raise the GH I use Seachem Equilibrium. That will raise the GH and it won't effect the PH. Then to raise the KH I use Seachem Alkaline buffer. That will increase the KH but will increase the PH also. Then to drop the PH back to 7.0 I use Seachem Acid Buffer. That wont effect the KH, but will only decrease the PH back to what you need. Only use them when doing water changes and not when you are topping off the aquarium due to evaporation

Baking soda is the best kept secret. More fish videos. .

Take the water before you water softer. The sodium is bad for your tank and the softener removes all the stuff thay gives you a gh. Im willing to bet if you take water before the softener your gh&kh will be closer to the same degree. From there figure out if you need to lower or raise it.

Baking soda to raise ph is a terrible and dangerous thing to do.You should never tell inexperienced fishkeepers to use that method and experienced fishkeepers know better.Im experienced, been in the hobby for 54 years and have maintained up to 80 tanks at one time.God I hate videos like this.

That is wrong. It's perfectly fine to use. Max it'll hit is 8.2 and does so rather quickly. That's for initial setup and crushed coral in tank. Also it's 100% ok to use during water changes to match tank parameters. As in my case I'm at a decent KH/GH and my tap water is nearly RO levels of TDS. I have to treat. Even did a test during cycling and dropped KH/GH a degree by topping off with untreated water. After 3 days parameters were back to normal due too the aragonite sand.

@@gasp8372 I use it for water changes. Nice thing about baking soda it almost instantly dissolves in water making the adjustment immediate. It can't exceed 8.2 pH. Keeping crushed coral or aragonite in the tank or filter helps maintain the parameters, otherwise it'll fall over time. It's nice to get the tank to where you want while aragonite maintains it. Drip acclimate new fish is the best way. In my case I'm shooting for 8.2 so it's easy. KH of 7 puts me at 8.2
