This is my entry for the BYC Video contest!
This video shows the importance free-ranging your BYC can have on the nutritional value of their eggs. Hope everyone gets a kick out of seeing my pretty hens. :)

To prevent your hens from laying out and about such as you have at 2:00 you can place decoy eggs in your nest boxes. Also, notice the hen laid her egg in a hidden/shaded spot... your nest boxes should be in the darkest part of your coop so the hens feel they are laying in a safe place. GREAT video... glad you focused on the health and nutrition of "true" free range... happy hen rearing!
These are the happiest hens I've ever seen in my life! Great job and keep sharing your videos. 👍
Look at all those happy chickens running around freely!!
Yup, it depends on the breed and on the time of the year. I usually stick to layers (breeds of chickens known for high egg production), so I almost get an egg a day, but during winter I'm lucky if I get 2 or 3 eggs a week. The amount of daylight a hen gets massively influences the amount of eggs it produces.
If you collect your eggs just before sunset the hens will be off the nests and you won't disturb their private time, and they won't be as likely to lay in the woods in a hideout nest. If you find a hen on the nest after all the others have gone to the roost, she will be setting or sleeping in the nest. If she is sleeping in the nest, remove her from the nest and place her on the roost or that nest will become very soiled in a few days.Great video. Glad to see your chickens so happy and healthy.

I love the way you raise your chickens, i can obviously tell that they like you because you are so relaxed and patient with them. and I also love how they have such good free range. :)
Right before dusk most birds, including chickens, instinctually go back to their "safe place," usually where the nest is. So if you have a safe enclosure, like a coop, for them, they'll automatically go back into it right before each night. :)

They are the healthiest & happiest chooks i've ever seen ...great video tyvm
thank you for the wonderful, informative video. I hope you won the video contest!
love the vid!! I am almost convinced that I need to get some chickens at my house. I have a little more than two acres, I could let let run around my yard and free range.
I have got to say, we live in the city limits in a subdivision but hubby has his mind set on chickens! So I am sitting her scouring the internet for information and your video literally made me laugh. Great resprite after feeling like I'm chasing my tail and not gaining the knowledge I feel like I need to take on this endeavor. Thanks!
Loved the chicken song/mix at the end. Thanks for the post.
Very nice video. Well put together and edited!
Hi nice video, I live out in the country and free ranging your hens is the best thing ever. I have 59 chickens and I get about 51 eggs every day. I agree with you, free ranging is better for your hens.
I love the beginning when the girls make a run for the green grass. Beautiful chickens. They look very happy.
I am a newbie at all of this! I thought your video was very informative! We have 2 Bantams, 2 RIR,and 2 guineas. I Love my chicks! Thanks!
I loved that remix when they were eating the table scraps!🐓🐓

I love your setup- a perfect example of how chickens should be kept! Makes sense really, gives the chickens a high welfare, natural lifestyle, and you get high quality eggs.

So my type of lady.. I love it how you treat them and enjoy it at the same time.
Awesome video! Good job.
Thank you for the excellent informative video.
The music was a little loud so it was really hard to hear what you were saying.
Very entertaining and informative. The music in the end had me laughing.
Amazing video!!
Love your video Beautiful hens
Good video. I would change the wording though about how the hens will sometimes want to roost in the backyard randomly. I would say they want to lay or something. When I think roosting I'm thinking of at night or during the day on a branch or something to sleep or rest. ;-)
I love the music at the end.
Hey wow very nice setup 👍 for hens ....
Great vid. My hens were originally free range, but 75% of my flock was killed in the spring. I kept them buttoned up for a couple months after that (They have a very large run). Now that they are full grown I let them out whenever someone is home (Which is most days, days I have errands they get let out when I get home). Critters don't seem to come out with kids and dog running around the yard!
I absolutely loved your video....thank you.
loved this
omg at the end music with the chickens clucking I love it lol
Beautiful hens beautiful owner. Greetings from the philippines
4:59 when the music takes off with chicken voices, I peed in my pants! That should be our new HIT song! Skrillex would be proud!

***** uneducated, ignorant, trash. You don't respect people. I feel sorry for your mother and father. Not even society would want you. Sorry but is the true.
Great video
beautiful chickens!
DugFinn, loved your video, as I just started about a year ago, raising my chickens from babies, now they are full grown. I usually feed them sunflower seeds, and worms from the bate store, grubs, and these oversized worms. By feeding them some greens, oatmeal etc, does it change the taste of the eggs???
very interesting video.Than you for sharing. Can you please make a video about the breed of chickens you have and how you got them thank you.

+Isaac owusu Kusi Do a www search for “farm supply” and your town. Even Chicago and NYC have them. They carry everything you need. I keep “Laying Pellets” (high protein feed specially formulated for laying hens.) In the early spring many carry chicks too. If not search for “Hatchery” McMurray is one of the oldest. Believe it or not, they will send you chicks in the mail. Many communites will allow hens but not roosters (cocks) because they are noisy. City folks like web sites like backyardchickens.com

You have some very nice chickens. Can your birds fly over the fence? Was wondering if I need to put wire over the top of my pen. I am new at raising chickens. Thank you for the video.
@DugFinn
9 жыл бұрын
Yup, they can fly over the fence, but they usually don't. So long as they're happy, they tend to stay in the backyard. Also, yes, put wire over the pen. Not to keep them in, but to keep out predators. Good luck!
great coop and vid do you need a rooster for chickens and can u eat fertile eggs
That you so much for making this
Great video, thanks!
Could you share with us where did you find this research about the amount of nutrients in the eggs, please?
Chickens are surprisingly adept at noticing hawks. Mine typically spend the day underneath the canopy of a tree or just inside the woodline where they are not readily visible from the air. I've even been messing with them in the yard and heard them call out to each other and run under a tree. A Drake duck I have looked up, when I looked up, I noticed a Hawk circling.
Its not like I want to switch to eating free range food because they are healthier, I would switch because I know these chickens are happy and have a chance to live
