How to Quickly Test a Fuel Pump on a Dodge Challenger

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Had this 2014 Dodge Challenger come towed in for a crank-no-start. Right away I could tell I didn't hear the in tank fuel pump come on during the 2 second priming. After tapping it, can hear it start to try and run. Have done a few on Dodge Challengers and seem to follow the same pattern. You don't need the scan tool to activate it, just key on for 2 seconds at a time; but you'll need a volt meter to confirm voltage at the pump.

What if you tap and it doesn’t turn on? Does that mean it’s bad? Or maybe something else not letting it start?

ok, If you have your meter on those two wires at the pump and read 12 volts or greater, while cranking the engine....and you are tapping and not hearing the pump, it's a bad pump! But if you don't see 12 volts there than there is an electrical problem downstream. Int hat case, you can use a power probe to add 12 volts safely to the hot side of the pump and if the pump runs, you definitely know power isn't getting there.

Yes, I replaced the fuel pump. When these start going bad, and you tap them they start working again!

It's very possible you have low fuel pressure, just before the pump goes out completely this can happen. Where the engine fires up and idles, but bogs down when you step on the gas. Unfortunately the best step is to take a fuel pressure and flow test. You need to know 100% it is a failing pump. You can buy pretty inexpensive fuel pressure test gauges for this car on Amazon, and I know some auto part stores rent them out, or even lend them out.

I heard my fuel pump start humming real loud while driving im not sure which one then a day later the car won’t turn over and I can’t hear it prime. Do you know what fuel pump primes the car? I would guess the drivers side but im not sure

On this vehicle, Yes the driver side (Left) is your pump! Also, try tapping on it and see if it makes any noise or starts the engine momentarily.

@@ripsgarage thanks for fast reply sir I did try that no luck. It shows on my multimeter I’m getting 16v to the drivers side fuel pump wire harness. Not sure why it’s saying 16v. I tried swapping relays said same thing.

@@Itzvinnyboii It could be the meter, try placing it directly on the battery and see if it reads correctly. Also, just be sure you have some fuel in there, I've had a few where the gauge was inaccurate and had no fuel and the pump was loud, due to sucking in air. But sure sounds like your heading to a bad fuel pump.

@@ripsgarage battery read 12v so I’ll just say it’s the meter too. I have half a tank of gas in the car. If the passenger pump was bad would the drivers side still try to prime? I’m pretty sure the pump is bad but I’m trying to narrow down what one it is
