How to Pull-Start an E-TEC 90

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

A short video showing my first successful attempt at pull-starting an Evinrude E-TEC 90. Previous attempts had not worked...finally figured out what I was doing wrong!

    Thanks for a great video on what could be a potentially life saving desperate option. I appreciate that you took the time to make a video and share it with everyone putting yourself and your outboard at risk to do so. If I'm ever in a situation that requires a pull start your generosity will serve me well. Also, keeping in the goofs was helpful in detailing all possible missteps. Thanks again, great video!

    This video saved me on the water! My etec refused to start, while I was drifting in the Indian ocean. One pull and it started. Turns out it was a loose battery connection

    Good idea for others trying to start an Evinrude on land: Don't connect water to the same inlet as this guy, as the purpose of this is for flushing only. If not, you would damage the water pump impeller pretty fast, because the suction holes are down on the gear housing.

    I just had to test this out so i tried this in my Verado 275 with a 8ft nylonrope and a friend to help me pull. Didnt go well.. The rope got stuck in the flywheel and it slangshot around the oiltank and threw the tank in the water. :( But it started, so thanks! :)

    You are very welcome! I actually had to pull start a couple of months ago...I had a bad battery switch which prevented the motor from getting enough juice to start, so I pull started , day saved.

    I'm sorry, but you are wrong on this. When I purchased the motor in 2005, I called Evinrude Tech Support and asked them the same question before I tried it. They gave me the go-ahead and said it was perfectly safe to run the engine off the flushing port.

    I find that the water intake opening on my E-tec 90 gets clogged very easily and the engine runs hot almost immediately. Once the intake is brushed clean and the engine cools, the engine starts and runs okay. Do you know if Evinrude makes a substitute water intake cover that doesn't clog so easily?

    It will even work with a stone dead battery (or the battery disconnected) , they desigend the system to get get enough power from the flywheel stator to boot the computer and fire the plugs and injectors without needing any power from the battery at all ..

    @nobabana - Exactly! (Long story) In my case there were issues with my battery, we were getting an early start. Fortunately, we were close enough to the ramp to be able to use the electric motor to get back.

    @JBrass22 I'm working on some other projects now...maybe later? Use1/8 cord, and make several overhand knots in the end to increase its size. I believe I used a long enough piece to do 1+ wraps around the flywheel. If you use the thinner cord and make sure the knot's big enough not to slide into the notch, you should be OK.

    The notched flywheel has been around for ever my 69 evinrude has it and my 62 evinrude had it as well. I've used this technique several times when either the recoil string broke or when I had an wire come loose on my controls. Like you said the ignition has to be in the on position or it won't go with electric start motors.

    I actually have dual batteries with a manual switch, plus I follow the recommended service schedule for the motor. The annual service would not normally include checking the batteries. In the case mentioned, I accidentally left something on with the battery switch in the "Both" position, so they both went dead.

    Hi Mr Loo, I am from Hong Kong. I would like to ask you some opinion about E-tec 90. Is this outboard easy to maintenance? Or that something easily broken? (like fuel pump or injectors) Thanks.

  • @btb.fishing

    Overall, I think it has been pretty easy to maintain. However, to do complete maintenance, you will need to have a PC available to apply software updates to the engine computer. Check out my website btb.fishing, I have some articles on my experiences with the E-TEC over the years. Will have the final chapter posted soon.

    Can you show how you put the knot in place, and what you did to properly wrap the rope? I could have used this trick a few times now, but also do not want to get caught in any rope that is stuck in the engine... please show how it's done.

    Have you ever thought about maintaining your boat so you dont have to pull start it, there are small devices that you can fit so when the battery is getting low it shuts off power so you have reserve for starting or perhaps look at installing a 2 battery system with a battery selector switch. But I think in your case your better off to take it to a service agent and get them to give it its birthday annually

    Under no circumstances DO NOT USE A PIECE OF METAL BAR OR SCREW DRIVER TO PULL THE ROPE. THE FLYWHEEL WILL SEND IT FLYING KILLING YOU OR THE OTHERS AROUND. I always have a piece of 10mm round wood at the end of my emergency rope starter, which is very light and is not capable to hurt anyone around if set it flying by the rotating flywheel. Please do not use metal things if you value your life or the life of your loved ones.

    The engine needs to be submerged in water above the cavitation plate or else the water pump will burn up in as little as 8 seconds without water! Muff's don't work either!!! for this demo. He used the engine flush fitting which doesn't feed the water pump.

  • @btb.fishing

    @btb.fishing

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hi Frank, I'm sorry, but while you are correct about the muffs not working on E-TECs, you are incorrect about using the flush port for running the motor out of the water. Before I tried this the first time, I consulted directly with Evinrude technical support on this issue. They guaranteed me that using the flushing port for running the motor out of the water is fine as long as you have sufficient water pressure. You will see steady streams of water coming out of the exhaust ports when the flow is right. Regarding your comment about the hose connect, you are thinking of some of the quick hose disconnects that have a valve in the male fitting (the part that goes into the motor flushing port). The quick disconnect I use does not have a valve there. It is an unobstructed tube with an ID just a bit larger than the flushing port itself, so there is NO water restriction for water going in or out. This was also cleared by Evinrude before I tried it.

    Good way to wreck your impeller that is the flush port you connected the hose to witch is the telltale for the engine when running you are forcing water back at your impeller.

  • @btb.fishing

    @btb.fishing

    Actually, you are not correct on this. The water connection was approved by Evinrude Tech support.I asked the same question, and they said running the motor off the flush port is OK.

    Video was good but i am shocked at how poorly BRP have designed this part of their motor. It looks very awkward, risky and hazardous to realise an emergency (rope) start. I understand modern motors have a lot more componentry however this looks like an accident waiting to happen.
