How To Prune Sugar Apple Tree To Get More Flowers & Bigger Fruit

Hello everyone, In this video, we will learn how to prune sugar apple trees to invigorate more flowers so I can hand pollinate for more fruit. I have already harvested one crop of sugar apples from this tree - it has stopped producing flowers and now only makes leaves - doing this solution pruning will make the sugar apple tree grow more flowers and fruits. This also strengthens the tree overall.
Important things to keep in mind when pruning
- always think about where the fruit will hang, wherever you cut on the branch flowers will emerge so make sure it is a thick branch.
- make sure the sugar apples lose the leaves, it sounds a bit harsh but this ensures that the sugar apple will be forced to push new growth and thus more flower set.
- make sure you water your sugar apples well during this process of re-growing their leaves and flowers. Annonas in general love water so during their birthing stage of flowers it is best to supply water almost daily (Here in Florida we are in the rainy season so it helps out).

    After watching your video, about 2 weeks ago, I decided to try your pruning method on one of our recently planted sugar apple trees. Totally amazed on how happy and healthy the tree looks with its new “haircut”. Has lots of little green leaves shooting out of the buds and branches. Looking forwards to seeing what happens during the next few weeks. (Mozambique, Africa).

    Hello, Yes an older tree can be defoliated as well but if you want to you can always give it a pruning and remove only the first few leaves of the branches, this will invigorate new growth on an older and thicker based tree.

    You may use 'Omscote Indoor & outdoor'. Growing sugar apple in the bay area will be a little more challenging as sugar apple prefers flat lands with no elevation compared to highlands such as california. But growing it is still possible. The sugar apple will defoliate come winter time but to promote new growth I recommend fertilizing and tipping your sugar apple.

    I water my sugar apple every other day or daily (if I can) sugar apples love water, they can take heavy amounts of water as they originate from South America and are used to the heavy rainfalls of where they are from. When they are pruned and are pushing new growth/setting new flowers it is vital to keep it well watered to allow your sugar apple the best chance to flower and set fruit. Hope this helps!

    Harley. Nice name. Can't wait to meet you. You know so much about Florida Fruit Trees! Got a question for you, Harley. Is it typical, when the temperature shoots up from Spring (82) to 99 degrees, the way it did in May 2021, for fruit trees to burn, get partial pattern leaf damage or simply drop most of their leaves? I was watering my Pineapple Mango, which I have shaped like a tree, and I was watering it, nearly ALL of the healthy looking leaves fell off. Now, days later, it's covered with leaving crowns all over. Avocados? Seemed like something I did but, the behavior is with all my fruit trees. I've just not experienced this before. What say you, sir?

  • @gardenflorida

    @gardenflorida

    Thank you Nutsack Gardening. I hope your trees are doing better now. It is not typical but sudden changes in temperature can affect trees if they are not protected/ healthy enough to endure it. But in your case that all your healthy trees dropped their leaves is unusual. How are your trees doing now?

    @@gardenflorida Thank you kindly. After all the rains we've been thoroughly enjoying, and more on the way, the growth has been phenomenal. I learned a lesson about Neem's Oil, which was most of my problem. Putting oil on leaves in direct sun is bad. Also, I didn't realize there is a method to the madness. The "Canopy layer" is missing. I have since used the massively rapid growth of Everybearing Mulberrry and their ability to grow from cuttings well, to create an upcoming canopy. That, and, I had to have some Pakistan Mulberry, too. Their leaves are enormous. The citrus taught me that WEEKLY, not monthly leaf-miner preventing is necessary. I discovered the little pests spend 80% of their life in the soil. Moving my target to include the soil has made huge gains in their demise.

    Ana Maria Guadayol Soursop on the contrary is a bit different in my experience, I have not yet fruited a Soursop on my tree yet but I’ve heard that the tree first must get large and lanky before it starts producing fruits and fruiting heavily - I believe this is because soursop or Guanabana is a relatively large fruit and the tree needs to be large as well - so I would not try this on Guanabana as there are other better pruning methods that would be better suited.

    Can Rollinia be pruned the same way?

  • @gardenflorida

    @gardenflorida

    3 жыл бұрын

    In my experience rollinia takes awhile to form flowers after it was prune *But please keep note my rollinia trees are younger and have not yet fruited* The sugar apples in this case will fruit even at a young age such as 3 years. With my rollinia I defoliated about 40% of the leaves and so far it only has shown new leaf growth & branching.

  • @gardenflorida

    @gardenflorida

    3 жыл бұрын

    Sugar apple leaves are black because around this time (cold season) they will defoliate and drop leaves, new leaves are to re-grow in march. A hard pruning can induce flowering.

    Why the flowers are so small, I am assuming the fruit will be small as well, is that correct.

  • @gardenflorida

    @gardenflorida

    3 жыл бұрын

    The flowers were so small due to the tree just being smaller and not having as much energy as it did the first flush around. Necessarily flower size does not correlate with fruit size in my experience, but smaller flowers are harder to pollinate. Also those flowers in the video that you saw actually grew more before they were able to release/ accept pollen.
