Thanks, we are pleased to hear you found this video helpful. We prune ours every year, and get lots of really nice, strong and colorful young growth, but if you are busy and don't get around to it, they can be pruned every second or even third year, the results are not as effective, but at least its better than if they weren't touched at all! Regarding the Burning Bush (Eunonymus alatus): grownbyoverdevest.com/plant/compactus-burning-bush/ We are no longer growing and offering this because of its invasive tendencies. But like you, several people have it in their gardens (including David) and to prune it, he makes a point of pruning and shearing it back immediately after it finishes flowering, With his large established plants, he removes about a quarter to a third of the growth which is enough to remove most of the little yellow pollinated flowers before they get a chance to set seed. The plants then grow out to produce plenty of young healthy shoots that of course show off the spectacular Autumn color each Fall. It takes a little effort to prune it, but it prevents the vast majority of little seedlings from taking hold, and since they are often well rooted in and not easy to remove, the effort is worth it, and means it largely alleviates the concern over invasiveness. Finally, have you considered subscribing to our channel? if not, now might be a good time to do so, because we are publishing more videos all the time. They will flower, but later in the season because they have to make the stem growth first, which of course is why this selection is so popular. Its beautiful, bright red stems stand out so well during the winter months. The flower on this type of Dogwood is not really very showy, which is why we are thinking that perhaps you are possibly confusing it with another sort.... The Flowering Dogwoods... An example of which is the incredible Cornus 'Scarlet Fire': kzread.info/dash/bejne/iIN4sJiSZK62cZc.htmlsi=O0DAMaxJId9JhTNQ This one grows into a small tree and does not have pretty colored stems, but man, does it have gorgeous flowers. Incidentally, this one does not need pruning (except to shape it as a young plant) and since we specialize in sending high quality, well grown and beautifully formed specimens to our partnering garden centers - all you need to do is plant it, water it and wait for it to grow into a beautiful tree, that will be covered with all the superb flowers that you can see in this video on our You Tube channel. which leads us to ask, have you subscribed to our channel? First of all, thanks for the sub., it is appreciated. Hopefully, it will help you get lots of good information going forward and enable you to become a little more successful and get more enjoyment out of your gardening. Now for your question.... You can let the plant get established if you desire, but actually it would be better to start pruning it earlier in life, because that builds a bushier, better branch furnished plant that will be more impressive. You may have noticed in our videos that we are pruning our plants all the time. Even our baby plants are trimmed frequently, that's why when you visit our partnering garden centers: grownbyoverdevest.com/retail-locator/ you will see that our plants are ALWAYS really bushy and well formed with lots of branching. When you trim plants, that stimulates better branching and if you do it early with juvenile plants that gets them to produce shoots near the base, and if these are pruned again, and again, it builds a stronger branch frame work. As you've seen in this video, it is good to prune them fairly aggressively, and, you can do that with just one shoot. But if you are a little unsure, and want to take a more tentative approach, you could start with trimming them lightly and then gradually become more adventurous as your confidence grows. We hope this helps. Once again, thanks for the sub. and finally, if find this and our videos helpful, it would be great if you could kindly share the links with your friends and click the "like" button too, because that will help other people find the information as well. These types of Dogwoods are tough, hardy and very resilient. So, there is hope that maybe it might revive, although we have to say..... at this stage, it doesn't look good! The main thing to do, is keep watering it well. These types love plenty of moisture in the soil, so making sure the soil remains moist will, certainly help the chances of revival. You can trim the shoots if you want. We suggest you start at the top, and if the cuts look dead and dry, work your way down the stem until you get to what looks like live tissue. The most important part of the plant are the bits you can't see (the roots), so hopefully at least some of them are still alive and growing under the soil, and if so, then you will see new buds appear. Fingers crossed! Have you subscribed to our channel? They are so reliable and adaptable, they can be pruned at almost anytime. And in the nursery we are continually trimming our plants in season, that's why our plants that you see in our videos and at the garden centers are so bushy and well formed. Obviously, the sooner they are trimmed in early spring, the more growth they are likely to put on during the rest of the year, so the bigger the red stems are going to be by winter time. Yes, but remember it's a protected (patented) variety, so it is illegal to propagate it for commercial resale without permission. If you want to get a plant or two for your own garden, it is probable that no one is going to mind. An easier way would be to look around the perimeter of established plants because often there are shoots that can be separated. You could prune it almost as hard as the young plant featured, but it might be better to take it back by about two thirds and then in subsequent years when it makes new shoots from the base you can take out the old grey. brown stems.

Just to be clear, though, this rejuvenation pruning prevents flowers from blooming and doesn't need to be done every single year. You can also take out 1/3 of the larger ones every year instead of doing it all at once.

Absolutely, it is a matter of choice and many people opt to prune less frequently or "thin" out the growth. But, as I think you've noted in the video, I prefer to get the best stem color and I am not concerned about having less flowers, so it is a matter of choice.
