Nice informative video. Is it not the case that plums should be pruned in late summer? if you do so in early spring and a late frost strikes you risk silver leaf disease.They dont need the kind of work as apple, basically keep the middle clear to allow sun wind through teh tree and cut off overlapping branches and you should have a successful tree.

I wish my plum tree can have many flowers as yours

excellent video. One question does fruit comes on new last year wood ( like grapes, and we have to prune each other any wood that is more than 1 yr old) ? or it comes on much older (2-3 yrs) wood and they will be our permanent fruit branches?

Hi Sandeep Pandir, they are not like grapes. Plum produces fruiting buds as you mentioned, from older woods and they will be fruiting for years on that. Occasionally that branch do die off, in which case cut if off and train another to replace. Thanks for watching.

I brought a Waneta Plum tree in last Summer, I planted in my backyard, it had flowers(same as your)at the spring break and no longer all gone, no leave ,no flower just only branches (brown colour), it was look like stop growing. I don’t know what happened? Can you tell me why? And tell me what can I do? Thank you very much!

We recently moved into a home that already had a plum tree and it is huge! I cannot reach some of the branches with my ladder. By the size of some of the branches I would guess it is at least 3 maybe upward of 5 years old (max 8 years because that is the age of the home). I would like to prune it so that I can reach all the branches and fruit. Even the base of the tree seems tall. Should I wait to prune it until most of the current fruit is gone later in the summer or sooner than that or later than that? OR should I hire a professional tree trimmer for the first time around and then maintain it on my own? Thanks!

If you prune a tree while it still has green leaves on it, you will take some energy out of the tree. If the tree is too large and vigorous, this might not be a bad thing. I do this with some of my trees that have gotten out of control. If you prune when the tree is dormant, it will come back the following season with vigorous growth, because the energy that was made the previous season is now stored in the trunk and roots. I have seen people cut a peach tree right down to a stump about 3 feet high in the winter. It then comes back next season with a flush of new sprouts that can then be trained to the proper shape, but I don't recommend something so drastic if you are new to fruit trees. You might start to get the hang of things by taking out some of the major branches if they are making it difficult to get into the center of the tree. You could cut one of these branches back quite a bit and then watch the next spring to see if and how new shoots grow from it. Sending a photo of the tree (with someone standing near it for height reference) might help. But keep in mind, I am no expert. I have about 23 trees in my orchard but I am still learning.

@@mikebetts2046 hi e are new to all this, have inherited a small orchard...only to find that the damsons all have Plum Pocket fungal disease...they no longer produce Bordeaux mixture ( EU regulations in the UK) would you know what we can do?The fruits are disfigured, brown and have no stone in them....

@@barbarastepien-foad4519 , I am no expert on this but if you can get the components of Bordeaux mixture, then you can make it on your own (copper sulphate and slaked lime). Both of these should be common items for orchards. In my orchard, I use copper in the spring (just before leaves break out) and then use a mix of Captan and miclobutanil for most of my fungus control. This works well for me. Sulfur can also be thrown into the orchard once in a while. But I do not have my compatibility chart with me at the moment so I do not remember what sulfur is compatible with. I know the captan and myclobutanil go well together. There are various type of copper solutions available (copper sulfate, copper octanoate, etc). I'm not a chemist so I cannot comment on the relative value of the various copper solutions. I think they all do about the same thing, which is to disrupt the ability of the fungus to reproduce. They do not necessarily kill existing fungus. But copper can burn leaves, which is why I use it before the leaves are fully out.

I thought you should only prune plum trees in winter as it increases the chance of it getting a disease such as silver leaf? since the tree is dormant & cannot heal the wound.

Hi Jakq71, pruning 1 and 2 year old trees is basically pruning to the shape that you would like the tree to be in the future and prune to an outward growing bud. Thanks for dropping by.

Hi Rob Balla, I usually prune them after leave fall and before new leave burst out. Pruning late Winter has the advantage of cuts being exposed lesser time to the elements and heals quicker during Spring regrowth. Hope this help and thanks for watching

I am not familiar with that specific type of cherry tree but I can offer some general advice that might be helpful. 1. Does the tree appear to be healthy in other ways? I have a tart cherry tree that for years produced very few flowers and no fruit. The leaves would drop off early in the season and growth was very slow. I learned that it was suffering from a fungus on the leaves. I then started using a copper spray in early spring and the tree really came alive. Leaves would then hold on well into autumn and started getting nice harvests. 2. Is there a possibility you are pruning off too much and this cutting off flower buds? 3. Is this tree a sweet cherry? Most of them require a pollinating tree of a different kind. Of course you said no flowering, so that would only be an issue of it flowered but no fruit. 4. Do you live in an area with very cold winters? Temperatures of around -20 F can kill the fruit buds of some cherry trees. I live in Michigan, USA and we have a huge cherry industry here, but our tart cherries can handle our cold winters. These are just some things to consider.

Also, sorry I did not pay attention that you are in Bangladesh, so no cold winters. But maybe you have too much rain and soil is too damp or too much clay. In michigan, our cherry trees grow where the soil is sandy and well drained.

Never prune plum in winter... please be aware of the major problem of silver leaf disease for plum and other stone fruit. . at least in humid climates. . i am battling against it here now after ignoring the good advice to prune in spring and summer in dry weather. . otherwise good video
