One thing very cool about the use of j-cradles is you don't need a truck to transport you yak. As you can see i have a Chevy Cruze and it carries my 75 pounder like a champ.
It is very simple process that can be done by yourself or the help with one other. If you follow these steps using reliable straps and j-cradles (which typically come all together) your kayak will be safe on top of your vehicle whether it is short or long distance.
Hope this helps!!

Best straight to the point video out there. Thanks!
Thank you! Seriously, the most clear, simple, and informative video on this I’ve found yet :)
Exactly like previous comments, clear straight to the point explanation and demonstration THanks!
Thanks of all the clips I watched you made this understandable in the most common sense way.

I’m glad this was helpful!
Nice, very informative....thanks for simplifying!
I've discovered a problem with this method, tying to the top loop of the J-cradle torques the cradle away from the rooftop cross bar and the cradle fails at the plastic brace that sandwiches the two cradle tubes. After 4 years of this method, I almost lost my kayak on the highway with such failing plastic parts of the cradle. Very dangerous for anyone behind me. Cradle should simply hold the kayak in place while you strap it to the crossbar. Always make a simple hitch knot at the cinch of the cam strap to limit risk of slippage.
Nice. Thank you for sharing this kayka loading video.
Great video. Excited to try out the J-bars on my next trip. And that's a 57 lb kayak..btw. :)
Awesome video- thanks for sharing
Very well explained!
It’s easier to pass the straps through the top loop before mounting the kayak. Also, twisting the straps slightly will reduce wind noise.

You mean leaving a few twists in it instead of keeping the tiedowns straight and flat and taught like a guitar string then? Normally its not annoying but sometimes i go to a prettier lake and it is more than an hour away and it does irritate me a little. Ill try, thanks!

@@miguelmarquez4192 Well the straps that are against the underside of the hull should be fine if you're under ~75mph. I'd imagine they'll start to catch some wind if you're going any faster., but on the other side, the straps that are over the sit-in/sit on top part should be twisted, because they will most definitely hum once you're at ~35mph.

the wrapping of the bottom of the cross and j bars was not optimal either.

what he was saying was that you don't want a twist on the side of your vessel that creates a single pressure point which may cause issue in the long run if done repeatedly. otherwise a twist in the strap elsewhere is just right!

good vid. i have the same kayak as you and find it hard to load; i see how you got yours up there and I will employ the same method. thx
Just got my 10 foot kayak finna be hitting Austin up this weekend. See ya peps in the water
If you put some foam pipe insulation or pool noodles on those cam lock straps where they pass over the paint on your car, it will prevent un-needed wear on your paint job. You can also buy rolls of velcro at any DIY store. These are great for securing all those loose ends so they don't flap around.

Bad idea I used pool noodle over front one time wind caught my pool noodle somehow spun it up under my front tire and the came strap raped around the brake line bad day.
Excellent 👍

How do you like your roof kayak J rack? What brand is it?
Nice job, man...Thanks!
Do the roof racks cause any water or wind leaks in the window jams?
what size should s hook?
thank you
Thanks brah!
Nice video
I actually loop my straps around the roof rack on both sides versus the top of the J-Bar. That way, the stress is on the rack versus the J-Bar, which can work itself loose especially on highways. Just my 2 cents. Thanks for the video!

I'm going to be using basically the exact same Cross bar and J hook setup you have in the video and basically on the same car as well. With that being said, Do I HAVE to use the straps for the front and back or is that more of an added safety feature?
@ChaCha_Fishing

Great! No they are just a safety measure. I normally would just use 2 straps, 4 for longer trips

Ahhhh, I see my issue; I have the J cradles and no straps; I needed to buy those separately..... Harbor Freight with the cams for the win.
If you’re traveling on the freeway or highway, do you have to secure both ends of the kayak to your vehicle or is that optional?
@jlancaster46
Жыл бұрын
Probably that is a local or regional law but it makes sense to do it anyway. Two weeks ago I started out on a beautiful sunny day but about 3 hours into my trip I ran into a HUGE side wind! Having the boats secured front and back as well as to the rack kept everything secure.

Not optional (unless you enjoy being sued by someone whose car (or body!) was damaged by your kayak working loose. It happens, even with good equipment and proper strapping)
Would ratchet straps work for this? I have two ratchet straps to attach to the J-cradles
@ChaCha_Fishing

Ratchets will certainly work, just be careful not to overtighten 👍
Any advice or suggestions for someone who’s 60 and fit, but not strong enough to lift my kayak over my head and load it on a Chevy Tahoe?
@ChaCha_Fishing
6 ай бұрын
There are a few options of a similar process. A lot of people will use a towel or something they can roll the kayak onto without scratching the vehicle. You can lift one end of the kayak onto the side of the car, let it sit on the towel, and then push it up from there. There are a few videos of that one KZread as well

Straps came with the j-bars. I’ve since then upgrade them to NRS straps because I now have a heavier and more expensive kayak
do doable with super heavy kayaks
Are the straps going down the front and back of the car necessary if I have a SUV?
@ChaCha_Fishing
3 жыл бұрын
Maxwell Gunz I have a sedan and unless I’m going 2 hours + I typically only only use the 2 straps on my j bars to secure my yak. So I’d say you’re safe to go with that. But the straps in the front and back never hurt!
@skmfkr2
3 жыл бұрын
unless its longer like 13ft or more or driving 65mph+ i dont think its that much of a concern. its more to keep the kayak from flying off if the straps fail. the rear is more for if you getting rear ended and the racks fails the straps anchors it to the car

I never use the front and back straps because I don't want them vibrating against the paint finish. Maybe no one has ever had an issue with that but it seems like the vibration would mar the paint.
@miguelmarquez4192

Some states require them and it sucks to get fined on a day when youre out to have fun. Besides look at the fail videos. Dont be that guy. Also you can use the tube with a strap type of deals that prevents vehicle damage and you dont have to modify your vehicle. Just close them in your hood and trunk.
Hi there. Why put a kayak aside? rather than just putting it upside down. The water will not get there and the wind will not interfere.
@oliviersavard8676
2 жыл бұрын
because putting it upside down will take a lot more space on the roof bars, which is not something you want when you're transporting something else on the roof (like a bike)

Wrong. It’s much easier to slide the kayak through the j rails nose first from the back of the vehicle
