Good video. Just one recommendation - the way those straps are over the open cockpit, the buzzing noise they will make as they vibrate like a guitar string will drive you nuts at highway speeds. The cure? Very simple. Wherever you have 6" or more of strap exposed to the wind, put a twist in the strap. This will eliminate the annoying buzz totally.

I always have a cut up pool noodle (cut to 6" lengths and sliced open) to cushion things. They also work well to reduce guitar string- type vibrations at speed. If you get an annoying vibration on thebp highway , pull over when it's safe, slip a piece of noodle under the strap where it won't come loose, retighten and be on your way.

By twisting the strap just one or twice you can stop that noise from happening. I used to make sure the traps were flat and perfect until I notice that if they have a twist in them that it made a much quieter ride.

This was very helpful, thank you. Does it make a difference which end faces the front of the car? I had the bow facing the front because I thought it would catch less wind on the road. I still caught a lot of wind in the cockpit. It was fine until I hit 55 mph. The higher the speed the higher pitch and louder the sound, plus some vibration. Any suggestions? update: I just finished reading some of the comments below, now I'm trying to remember if the straps were over the cockpit or not. If they were, that could have been why it was so loud. Thank you to Debbie Bridge for pointing that out and the tip on putting a twist in the strap over an open area.

Most of these manufacturer's say NOT to secure anything to those handles front or back, those are just for carrying or dragging your kayak . Tying them off going down the windy Highways will gradually bend/break your Bow-nose or Stern of your Kayak, the answer is to just have a second Tie-down and Double tie your front rope securely to the rack ...

There is an attachment for Thule that is a pull out rod (hides inside cross bar) that allows you to rest one end of kayak on after you lift it up. Kayak is propped up diagonally at this point. Second step is lifting up the end resting on the ground. Can be slippery, especially after rowing so exercise caution. If you can get some anti slip mat to rest lower end on, it helps the kayak from sliding back down while repositioning your hands. Good luck

I never use front and back straps when transporting. While they are useful as a backup fail safe should one of your main straps fail, they offer zero advantage to securing the kayak. A better solution I have found while transporting two J racks is to loop the straps through to the opposite J rack. You now have four contacts and the ENTIRE system is way more secure. Both J racks now are secured together with 4 point bracing.

Ugh those bow and stern ropes make horrible horrible sounds when driving and I have had an "S" hook that was attached to the underside of the car unbend (from the "S" shape) and fly off while driving down the highway. I think THAT is dangerous!! I make sure that the rack is securely fastened to the bars and the yak is securely fastened to the rack and property nestled into the rack. And I have a sunroof so I'm constantly looking up and checking to see how much they wiggle. I don't drive too fast. If my kayaks fly off it will be because the factory rack itself became separated from my car.

Not technically, however, you are leagally required to "properly" secure your boat. Since both Yakima, Thule and most reputable manufacturers require the use of a bow and stern tie-down it could leave you liable, as well as, void your warranty should the boats come loose.

🚩 You weren't watching (Not that I believe you would would notice or care even when seen lol) when tightening the first strap as the buckle should have been positioned away from the boat surface and Not touching it at all ...especially if it's Not (and yours wasn't) a plastic/rubber coated buckle then it will surely eat into and damage the kayak or at the very least get it all scratched-up in an bad area‼️

Wow. you left two straps hanging loose. ? I never trust a built in strap on bow or stern of any boat. That bow strap is fine to carry the boat, but using it to tie down a boat or have high tension from 65mph wind will stress it. I tie a loop around the bow and pull back until tight, one on stern pulled forward so the cannoy come off. These are tied to straps protruding from under the hood. If t tie downs on min part of kayak com o, that tie down on the bow will neverold the kayak in high wind at 60 mph.

My straps were way too long for one kayak, I trimmed the end off, tied these 2 remaining bits into 2 loops with a big figure-eight knot, and just jam the knot under the hood with the loop jutting up outside to attach the front tie-down, or under the trunk lid/hatchback to tie to the stern. Works a treat, costs nothing, saves some trash.
