How To Properly Change Your Diesel Fuel Filter On A Duramax 6.6 Liter

In this video, I'll show you how to change a Duramax diesel fuel filter in a 2007 LMM. You will also see a Wix fuel filter fall apart just before I install it. This same fuel filter and configuration are found on the LB7 2001-2004, LLY 2004-2005, LLY/LBZ 2006-2007, LMM 2007-2010, and LML 2011-2016.

John, love your videos, very informative and thank you! I changed my fuel filter as soon as I ordered a replacement Oem when I bought my duramax about a year ago, when I dumped out the contents into the pan, there was no water present but a noticeable amount of metal shavings, not large but about the size of cake icing sprinkles. It had 56,000 miles on it at the time, now it has approx 75,000 in which I have changed it out 3 times since then and has been perfectly clean without any trace of shavings. If this has a fuel pump In tank(?) my only guess it was from that? It is a 2005 LLY Duramax.

I have never seen any metal shaving in my fuel filter. It could be from your fuel pump but I would think that your pump would be toasted by now. Sound like you bought a good truck with low miles.

I bought a K2500 6.2L diesel GMC brand new in 1984. I still use it as my livestock water truck. I credit the longevity to proper maintenance… especially the lube oil and fuel system. My newest truck is a 2009 one-ton Duramax. Nothing but Amsoil lube oil and I replace the fuel filter at every oil change. Not to mention that I always run Power Service fuel additive… winter and summer.

I bet that you will get more years of service out of the 84 only because of all that emissions on your 09. But yes good serving will go along way. Thank you for your comment.

Where does all that debris come from? I heard diesel fuel is dirty from the supply tanks but wouldn't filters on the pump at the station prevent that large of debris in the pan?

Sometimes I would think that it could come from the fuel handle and just little bit of dirt falling in?

There's a lot easier way of doing this. It involves removing the 2 bolts that hold the fuel head to the motor. No need to remove the inner fender well. You do need to remove the air intake for easier access.

I see it was a 2007 you don’t have a fuel pump you have a injector pump that only works when you’re cranking it

You are right. I was thinking it had a pump in the tank to supply the fuel filter a lift pump. I know it has the CP3 pump because I will dread that job. Thank you for your comment and thanks for watching.
