How to propagate Orchid cactus (Epiphyllum)

I accidentally broke off a few pieces from an orchid cactus the other day... As sad as this was it does provide a good opportunity for me to propagate this plant and make a little video demonstrating the different ways there are to propagate this beautiful plant! Hope you enjoy the video- thanks for watching :)

    thank you for the info! i have a super large and raggedy pink orchad cactus that i missidentified as a xmas cactus. anyways the craziest thing is my plant was giving me flowers on the most damaged of leaves, i mean were talkinn like fully barked up cactus leaves with holes. you would honestlty think it was dead but they still produced flowers

    You have really helped me understand these exotic beauties. Most reading says it doesn't like full sun however you mentioned some sun. Can you specify what kind of sun they like? Filtered? Morning?

  • @westcoastgardenguy1990

    @westcoastgardenguy1990

    I’m happy to hear that :) Thank you for letting me know! They really like full morning sun or a few hours of full afternoon sun. They will do well in shade as well but they aren’t as good at blooming without a few hours of sun. I would just avoid the hot midday sun - that will most likely burn them. Hope that helps!

    What a cute dog! You mentioned that some of the cuttings in the group of 10/12 in the water had roots growing out of the top, can't you plant the end with the roots in the soil already and they would take hold? I'm curious why you would keep the ones that have roots already in the water. I have some that I cut but have these roots coming out of the top now and I was tempted to just put them in soil topside and see how it goes, have you tried this?

  • @westcoastgardenguy1990

    @westcoastgardenguy1990

    3 жыл бұрын

    Thank you :) Yes you could plant them that way and I am sure that they would take hold and grow although I have not done it that way specifically… in this case I kept them in the water without planting them right away because I didn’t have room in my grow area for the cuttings. Keeping them in water keeps them good indefinitely and I potted them up once I had the time and space to house them :)

    Hello. I love your videos. I bought one of these plants at a charity shop for £1 I didn't know what it was as it looked unimpressive. However after 12 months it's taking over the kitchen and shooting all over the place. I keep it in a window that gets the sun almost all day and at night it sits behind a draw blind which gets cold. So everything you've said ticks the boxes. It's not flowered yet. How soon into maturity will I expect to see it flower?

  • @westcoastgardenguy1990

    @westcoastgardenguy1990

    Thank you :) That’s so nice to hear! It should flower anytime by the sounds of it- mine started forming it’s first buds when it was still a little rooted cutting but it blasted the buds because I moved it… now I never move it once it starts forming flower buds and it blooms well :)

    Do you take the top cup off to mist the cutting while you’re waiting a month for it to root? Great video by the way. I got a cutting 4 years ago from my friends acupuncture teacher. I left it in water for a year and now it’s my favorite plant. It’s doing really well but I feel like I need to chop and prop a bit since it’s lanky. How do I know what variety I have ?

  • @westcoastgardenguy1990

    I do take the top cup off to mist every so often to keep it moist inside. It’s hard to know what variety you have unless the person that gave it to you knows what it is - there are so many different varieties!

    Mine had a bloom form the first few months after I propagated it (when it was still a young cutting) but it aborted because I moved the plant so I think that most plants can bloom within the first year if you give them the right conditions

    Keep it well watered and don’t let it become too dry for too long. I keep mine well watered and let it dry out a bit in between. Also, Put it somewhere where it gets some cool night temps and warm days. I put mine outside in the spring when the risk of frost is over and leave it out in the fall. If you don’t have a place outside you can put it, try a cool room that gets lots of light. Good luck!

    The leaves grow in different shapes; some are flat some are like 3-D, and some are pencil wide and shape. Can they all be propagated? Did you find out any information about the spines growths someone asked about? Also, my plant gets so top heavy and unruly with new growth. Should I just cut the new leaf that is growing on top of the first leaf? I have never gotten more than one or two flowers a yr. I will have to try some of your suggestions about the cooling and I think I might need to water more often. Thanks for all this information.
