I'm growing several Lophophera species. I'm a long time gardener but first time with cacti. Apparently many cacti need high humidity for the first several months of their life. It seems counter intuitive as Lophophera cacti and others come from the driest places on the planet however in the natural habitat it is only dry part of the year. At other times Lophophera can be under water literally during the wet season. I've struggled with mould and algae because of the high moisture required but when I found the sweet spot they do well although they grow slowly. At 2 months of age my cacti are about the size of the eraser on a pencil and look like little jelly beans with some sparse hair on their heads. Real cute!

I’ve been an avid gardener for over forty years, but now am disabled and can’t get up and down and back and forth to my outside gardens. So I’ve greatly increased my cacti and succulents as my indoor garden. I chose portulaca because with care they’ll bloom beautifully much of the year. Three weeks!!! Thanks to the advice on fast germination. Besides, I’ve loved them since I was a toddler watching my mom in her prize winning gardens!

I grow them in Utah too. I have found that they are susceptible to sunburn in our higher altitude and drier climate. I put them out in the summer, but I have to be very careful, they are the most susceptible to burning when I am introducing them to outdoor conditions as well. I have noticed that they grow really quick when I graft them.

Good information on seedling culture. I’ve never grown cacti from seed. I’ve only grown propagated them from cuttings , some as large as five feet tall. I let the cut end dry and callus and then pot the cutting in a sandy, gritty mix or simply stick it in the ground in its permanent location.
