Very helpful video, thank you. I noticed that many Hindi words end with "a", but some A's are pronounced and some aren't. If you could make a video on that, I'd watch it :)

This was really helpful, thank you! It's uncanny - I lived with Indian people while at university, have cooked (admittedly mostly vegan) Indian food for almost 20 years, and still nobody has ever corrected me on my pronunciation. I'm an English language teacher and live in a different country (Germany) and I'm familiar with the problem of people not correcting through overpoliteness. So I'm really grateful for your intervention into English speakers' tendencies to mispronounce words we use all the time (sometimes incorrectly) deriving from other languages! Maybe this could become a series! And I especially appreciate your video on the linguistics of racism. If you don't mind, I might have to show that one to some of my seminars!

Wow thank you so much for this comment! Definitely people tend not to correct for fear the other person may get upset and that's crazy that no one you lived with decided to tell you. Great idea to make this a series :D And please feel free to share the Linguistics of Racism in your seminars that means a lot!

We have a new dr where I work her last name is Thakkar. How would an American pronounce this? She has tried to help me but due to her accent I just can’t get it, but really want to get outside my box of English or American only lol. Thanks

This is so helpful and interesting but I'm always nervous my attempts to pronounce things correctly will seem like mocking.

As an Indian person, I always get so excited when people try to pronounce things correctly :). But you're right, in many cases, it can feel like someone will make fun of you - I experience the same thing with French! It's an interesting line to tow and I don't have an exact answer for why people are like this regarding language.

This is wonderful information! Some gentle feedback, you speak too fast. Slow down, it will help you not appear so nervous. If you taught English this way to English language learners, it may come across as condescending. It is clear you are venting on things that bother you. My feedback is just observation, not criticism.

This would be much more helpful if you a) slowed down and b) stopped ridiculing people who don't say words in your language correctly. I teach about university academic writing to approx. 60% international students, many of whom are from India, especially this year. I would not think of ridiculing them for the way they speak English. They are, at least, trying. I do ask them, because I believe pronunciation is important, especially when using their names, how to pronounce them. It's respectful. Perhaps, instead of correcting "trendy Indian words," demonstrate more of the phonetics, such as you did on the "kk" part. That was helpful. I know the w sounds like a v, but what about dh or gh and the j at the beginning and end of a word. That's more helpful.
