Is your ignition key no longer working because it's worn down? Don't bother towing the car to a dealer or paying for a mobile service to make you a new key. All you need to do is briefly visit any dealer and give them your VIN and proof of ownership to get your key code. With the key code, you can go to a locksmith and have another, very accurate ignition key made, and based on that you can follow these simple instructions to program the key to your car (in my area, cutting a chip key costs around $30). This car is a Chevy Silverado ~2009. And, as you can see, it took about a half-hour, and no special tools -- just your car. Do it yourself and save $$$
Check out this old key versus a new key under the microscope in this video - the reason it works in the door and not the ignition is because doors have fewer tumblers. So, sometimes you have no choice but to make another key. This is how to do it cheap! It's always a good idea to have a spare, especially in the wintertime.
You can see it was the first cold day of the year, way below freezing, and that's why the tires were pretty low (and the car hadn't been started in a couple days). If you haven't started your car in a long while, be sure to use a charger to top off your battery, since this will take a solid half hour plus a little waiting time.
This works with some other cars too, but be sure to check your year and model first before trying this.
