Just a quick video showing how easy it is to program repeater information into a Baofeng HAM Hand Held Radio. In this video I used a UV-5RE Plus but it works the same for any of the UV-5R variants.
I used Chirp to program this radio which can be found here:

I used RepeaterBook to get repeater information which can be found here:

Here is a great website with tons of information on Chirp and Baofeng radios:

Awesome tutorial! I've had an easy time of using CHIRP, I also use it on a Mac and also successful on a Surface Pro 3 running Windows 10. Agree, programming using the buttons on the radio is painful. I did, however, print off a programming menu and keep it in my radio bag (in the event). Having the ability to have multiple images saved with different channels/freq's is a huge plus.

I like that you show that you can disable TX on either (or both) bands, (Many vids don't show this setting at all!). This is VITALLY IMPORTANT for those who buy these JUST to use them as a scanner. (These radios are a legit decent choice for "Railfans".) Plus, even NOW there are still places (Like here in Pittsburgh,PA) where most PD,FD and EMS is untrunked, analog UHF. If ANYONE is intending to use one as a JUST a scanner and wants to KEEP LEGAL, Disable TX on BOTH bands, that way you won't even accidentally transmit!

Great video. Is there a way to save that info in Chirp and program multiple radios? Or do you have to go through the entire process each time?

Yes, you can download the repeater info from RepeaterBook and save it to a csv file. This would only be the repeater info.

So I just bought some UV-5R’s. I’m moving to Washington and wanted to use them between the two vehicles were driving up there. Do I need to have multiple channels/codes depending on where we’re driving through? Or can I use the same channels/codes for the entire drive? I was thinking FRS channels only since we’re not licensed yet. But for now it’s just for the drive, car to car.

Well, it’s not legal to use a Baofeng to transmit on FRS. That said I’d use the same frequencies for the trip....

Hey man im NEW to this and an old fart I follow what you are doing as far as loading the programs into your radio will the radio hold all the repeaters lets say you choose all of oklahoma will it download them all???? Or do you need to be selective as to what towns you go through ergo we travel from oklahoma to Arizona and pass through various parts of Texas, New Mexico and Arizona....am I being confusing???

  • @TheSmokinApe

This particular radio only has 128 memory slots so there is a limit. You can use the proximity search to find repeaters in the areas you will be traveling in.

Great video, thank you. After you program a repeater frequency, the offset, tone, etc., do you have to remain in frequency mode to use the repeater or can you revert to Channel mode and transmit/receive. I ask because when you are in channel mode, the frequency displayed in Channel B is not the offset frequency, it is a different channel/frequency. So when you transmit on the repeater frequency while in channel mode, I presume you won’t hear any responses. Would that be correct?

I have a Mac like you and I try to plug in a Baofeng UV9RPlus and When I go to Radio> "Download from radio" the only Port option I get is "/dev/cu.Bluetooth-Incoming-Port" There are no other options list like in the video where it says the USB port. Can't download anything at all? When I try on Parallel Desktop and Windows 7, it works. How do I get it working on my Mac? /Svante (Sweden)

What programming cable are you using? Many problems are caused by cheap knockoff cables. I am using the Baofengtech FTDI PC03 cable with my Mac and the BF-F8HP radio (latest in the UV-5R Series) without any issues. Running Mojave 10.14.6. This is a link to the cable I'm using...hope it helps. Sorry I can't be or more help at this time. baofengtech.com/Programming-cable

Sounds like something might be wrong with your USB port. Do other USB devices work correctly? If that works maybe try a factory reset of the Baofeng. Good luck.

Can you clarify on 6:33: What do you mean you cannot broadcast on FRS and GMRS frequencies? Isn't this frequencies for license free walkies? You cannot use you uv-5r to talk to your kids walkie talkies?

What's the deference between channel mood and frequency mood?? Another think when you turn on the frequency mood it shows two frequency numbers one on top line and one on bottom line so what's deference between those two numbers or lines? Is it one to receive and one to send or something else?? Please let me know.
