Hands down best "how to program GMRS" video Ive seen yet (and I have watched a bunch of them!). Thank you. I cannot wait to try it. Most of my GMRS repeaters I programmed correctly, but there is one repeater in particular that I am puzzled why I cannot hear them and they can hear me. You rock!!

@pozouli Tone is just using CTCSS on the input of the pair programmed with no CTCSS on the output. TSQL adds CTCSS on the output also. This helps if you want to not hear any traffic than radios using the CTCSS you've picked. Many repeaters require an input tone to key up, but many also transmit a CTCSS tone also so you can hear traffic only through the repeater and nothing else that doesn't share the same tone. You can program a monitor button to defeat receiving CTCSS and listen to all traffic on that frequency, and/or enable it if you only want to hear traffic that shares the same CTCSS.

This was great!! My question is concerning the DIY channels on the gm30 software. When I've added in frequencies the default offset of +5 hasn't been properly displayed as +5. The 462 will go to 467 but after the (.) It won't be the same number like it should. 462.550 will be 467 525. That number will be in a shaded gray box so I can't manually change it. Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you.

I was programming in a uv21 pro v2. I downloaded the channels and in the chirp on dtcs code there is an A 23 the polarity is NN the Rx dtcs is 23 cross mode is tone-> tone dose anyone know why this is? It Lso is on the all ham channels i put in. Some of the channels say on the mode fm and some say nfm

I have Baofeng UV9r radios. When I switch to frequency mode on any channel the frequency shown is not as listed in the Chirp chart. The radios Tx and Rx to each other on any channel. Up loading Chirp to the radio does not change the frequency shown on the radio. For instance GMRS channel 15 on one radio shows 462.577 the other shows 462.565 when the Chirp chart shows channel 12 to be 462.550. Could someone please explain this?

Please clarify whay you can do with DIY channels. My UV-9G has 25 of those. Can additional repeaters be programmed into those slots?

How can i save chirp to my desktop on my computer so i dont have to download it each time i use it

Im confused, I did the tutorial exactly as was shown, and when I restarted my radio, it had replaced channels 1&2 with the two channels. But the frequency was not the same it had changed from the 462.700 to the old frequency for channel 01, the frequency for the repeater in my area is also 462.700. Same with Channel two, the simplex channel, new channel name came in but it was the old frequency from channel 02. Another thing, when I say read radio initially it actually doesnt load any of my other pre-programmed channels. It shows that it loaded the radio, but when the screen appears, it only shows added memory channels. The radio I am updating is a TD-H3 by TidRadio.

So after much trouble of finding a solution I figured out that I could fix this by just resetting my radio and then taking the Chirp image and moving the channels I created to custom new channels that were not locked down using chirp and reuploading the image using Chirp to my radio, just letting everyone know if they are having the same issue. I have read in so many places that according to FCC regs, the standard channels that come with the radio are mostly locked down. Which is strange why this is given that you can just create new channels outside of the standard channel list.

Thank you for the video. It helped to clarify the difference in using Tone vs. TSQL. I've programmed a repeater into my UV-5R and my brother's RA-89 with identical repeater settings, similar to your example. I can talk with others on the repeater, and he can talk with others on the repeater, but we cannot talk with each other via that repeater; I am stumped. Any thoughts???

You are probably too close to each other if you're both using a repeater pair. The radios will "desense" each other unless the repeater is powerful enough. You'll need to use a simplex (radio to radio) channel for that unless you get some distance from each other and use the repeater.

@@ChrisEbert388 You are right, we were only about 50 ft apart when testing the configuration. Actual usage will be 40 mi apart with the repeater halfway between us. I will repeat the test today at our distance to confirm that was the problem. Thank you again.

how would you program it if the RX has PL of 167.9 and the TX has a PL of 103.5 on the same repeater?

On the programming screen, you'd click the Tone Mode box and a drop down shows up. Select "Cross" and a window pops up. Select Tone-Tone and hit OK. Then select your transmit tone. Hit OK. Then select your RX tone. Hit OK. The tone mode should now say cross, and one tone should populate the Tone field and the other in the tone squelch field. Then you're all good with split tones.

I am very confused. I have a Boafeng HT. The keypad instructions says that you have to add a TX and a RX frequency, not an offset. The TX frequency (which is the repeater in frequency) would be +5 MHz giving you your offset. I originally uploaded the Baofeng programming software as at the time, Chirp did not have the radio in it’s list. It has columns for both RX and TX frequencies. I now have Chirp that has my radio and it uses the the offset. Now that I have added different RX and TX frequencies from the Baofeng program, do I still add the offset in the Chirp program? Can you or someone else help?

Set the offset field to 5.00 mhz and set the duplex field to +. You can also set the duplex field to "split", enter the inpit and output frequencies as normal, and split should read it as such as it will read the absolute input frequency you set to it. GMRS repeaters have a standard 5 Mhz offset, period. If you use the shift feature in the radio itself, you'd set SHFT to + 5 mhz. If you use Chirp and enter the frequencies manually (462.550 as the receive and 467.550 as the input, for example), Chirp is setting the shift for you because that's what you entered. Using Chirp is easier because you can just enter your input and output frequencies and its done if you set the columns correctly. Setting a "shift" is more for manual keypad entries but you can do it in the program.

Cross modes is just a way to blend different CTCSS and DCS tones. For instance, a repeater may have a digital input tone on its input frequency (DCS) and a analog output on its output frequency. Example: Input was 467.600 (D412N) and Output was 462.600 (141.3 Hz) > For this instance, you would pick DTCS->Tone Examples from Chirp of all the different methods can be found at chirp.danplanet.com/projects/chirp/wiki/DevelopersToneModes#:~:text=A%20cross%20mode%20of%20%22%2D%3E,Otherwise%2C%20use%20Memory.

If you program the radio correctly and are within range of the repeater, it should work.

Seems like FRS use to stop at CH14. Did they change the rules an allow FRS to use CH15 - 22? That could cause a problem.

Yes, they did this years ago. It's 2 watts license by rule and narrowband emission. To use anything more than 2 watts or a repeater requires a GMRS license as the services more or less blended. FRS is not allowed on the GMRS repeater input channels.

@@arkradio1 right. Not interfere with the Repeater but interfere with the GMRS station trying to hear the repeater. Say if by shear chance someone with FRS was close to a station using a distant repeater on or near a Repeater output the FRS could cover the repeater up. It just seems like its possible.

I just heard some kid on 462.600. Full scale! ( S9 plus). Good thing i dont have a repeater on that freq.

Trying to program just the gmrs channels into my uv 5r, but the upload to radio isn't available. Frustrated. Also Old Guy Syndrome

You need the proper cable with the proper installed software (not the chirp software but the cable firmware). Did your cable come with directions?

@@OShackHennessy The cable is the Baofeng branded one included with the radios. I can download the couple of gmrs channels I managed to program into the unit, delete them, then bring up the preformatted list, delete the repeaters and no farther. The Upload is not highlighted. Did the reset to Factory as they are new radios. One at a time is tedious to say the least. Probably just missing something in the vids. Back to OGS. Goes along with CRS " Can't Remember SH*T"

The stock channels are a csv file, have to be an img file. Nowhere to change the file type to upload
