@@shaneblake1644 I'm hitting the same error with all the 4.2 and later profiles and have not found a way to solve it. I tried with both 4.12 and 4.2 and I get he same error message. I'd love to try these settings but I've had 0 luck searching for a solution elsewhere. Hopefully someone can offer some help. Edit: @desiv 1 posted this solution in another comment. All credit to him/her! "I know this is a bit older, but just an FYI. If you have a newer version of CURA that won't import the profiles on the website, here's what you can do. This worked for my CR-10... (It might not work for other or non-Creality printers..) 1: (I have 7-zip installed), right click the file and choose 7-zip - Extract files. 2: Rename the directory it created (just to something else, ie. I renamed one of mine to just Siepie) and then go into that directory and there will be two files. 3: Edit each file (I used Notepad++) and change the quality line to this: quality_type = standard (I believe they are normal before the edit; that line will be in each file..) 4: Right click the directory, select 7-zip - Add to Siepie.zip (or whatever you named it) 5: Rename the file back to .curaprofile (in this example, from Siepie.zip to Siepie.curaprofile 6: Import that profile into Cura. (Note, I have successfully imported and it looks good, but I haven't printed anything yet.. Also, if this doesn't work for you and you have other profiles you have imported, you can use this procedure to extract the other profiles to see what the quality_type should be; it is not necessarily the same for each printer model. That's what I did with a CHEP profile to find out that "standard" worked for my setup."

Heya, one of the Cura Devs here. The top infill trick works because you treat the entire model as top surface. As for most models you care a whole lot less about the infill, by default, Cura prints the infill faster (and thus, way more ugly). By " tricking" cura into doing this, what you are actually doing is ensuring that the acceleration / speed values of the infill are ignored (to be replaced by the much lower values of top). So instead of doing the tricking, it's way smarter to just decrease the infill speed / acceleration values. That way you get the result you want, without losing control. Another option would be to set your wall thickness to a high number, although that will make Cura use concentric like filling (which may or may not be what you want). I've looked at your profile and a few settings don't actually, well, do anything. As i already mentioned, setting your top layers to 9999, means that every bit of material on the inside gets classified as top. As such, nothing is considered to be infill. So changing any infill setting won't actually have an effect (so you can dump the speed infill and infill density setting). Another weird thing is that with your settings (due to inheritance), your inner wallspeed is 25 (as it inherits from print_speed without modifiers) but your outer wall speed is 12.5 (as it by default inherits wallspeed /2). Interestingly enough, as your infill is replaced by top/bottom speed, that is suddenly printed at 12.5. So you have a single outer wall at 12.5, then a single inner wall (as by default there are 2 walls) printed at 25 and then all other lines printed at 12.5 again. You also print with rafts, so changing the initial layer doesn't really affect things. The raft already "soaks" up the inital layer (thus preventing any elephants foot).

Suddenly things get a lot clearer :) Someone suggested that it was just slowing down the entire print, but it looks like it is still printing at different speeds (which is what I would observe when I'd watch a mini print) if I understood you correctly. In my tests, and some tests with the community, concentric filling caused some issues on a few Ender 3 prints. I'm recommending linear now. A lot of folks here have asked about getting easier to remove supports. It has been fine for me, but I know a lot of folks in the community would be interested in making that better. I'm going to be running some tests on z distance and using a support interface, but was wondering if you had any suggestions. Thank you again! Danny

So yeah, it's printing *some* bits at a different speed, but most of it will be slower. The thing that you actually want to do is changing the infill speed / jerk / acceleration. I think that you do want the infill to be faster than the top/bottom layers, but you do want it slower than the default values. So not using the 9999 top layer trick will mean that you can probably get your prints a bit faster (you are fully correct that it's always a tradeoff, but there is usually a way to mitigate the negative effect of some things while increasing the positive effect). As for actual quality; I'm personally a big fan of lower infill and more walls. Look at most of the UM profiles; they use 3 walls. This is especially the case for "organic" prints (eg; models without flat surfaces). They get most of their strength from the walls, not the infill. Despite UM machines being bowden machines (and thus a fair bit different) there is a lot to be learned from them. Ultimaker as an entire team working on only tweaking quality profiles into perfection. Support wise, I'm spoiled. Working for Ultimaker means that I have access to dual extrusion printers with PVA, which removes the need to muck around with "regular" supports. But from my past experience I can give some pointers; Increasing the Z distance will make it easier to remove, but this always comes at a cost of worse prints. You can also underextrude the support interface layers on purpose (eg; That way you get sponge like results, but its real tricky to control). I don't have that much experience with that, but you could also consider messing with the support interface line width (Decreasing the contact area of support with actual model). Future version of Cura will also have a feature that enables you to add a "wall" around support, making it easier to break off entire chunks of support at once. There is of course also the option to use "anti-overhang-meshes". Sure, it isn't as great as what S3D does with regards to placing supports, but it does let you mark areas as "Don't support this". This is especially nice if someone already did this for one model as from then on you can just share the project file.

really would love an update for this video! a 2022 version of anything you've learned since :) I'm gearing up to get into 3d printing soon, and I'm having difficulty deciding whether to try out FDM or resin printing first, because I know I want to do both terrain and minis. If I can do both on an FDM, I'd rather just skip the resin printer entirely!

Slow down your print speed to about 15mm/sec. and lower jerk settings. That´s it. It just prints super slow and thus very precise.

@@jontay4199 jerk basically means how much your printer can go from stand still so 0mm/s to say 5mm/s. So it that case jerk of 5 would be say 5mm/s, jerk of 10 would be 10mm/s. Then there is acceleration, this works like in a car where you can accelerate say from 5mm/s to 60mm/s in a certain time. Jerk is very important to get sharp corners and or less ringing. Jerk and Acceleration make up 90% of the print speed. So to stay at that example from 0mm/s to 5mm/s your print head movement will be instant (jerk 5) from 5mm/s to 60mm/s your acceleration will kick in.

These minis look amazing. Also, let's not forget that even as Resin printer prices fall, FDM still always has a place. My son got an Ender 3 for Christmas and it was perfect for him. He can make prints in his room with no toxic liquids, just a clean, mechanical machine to work with. This is by far some of the best results I've seen from FDM.

the FDM process releases toxic particles... PLA and PETG are mostly "safe" but I still would not print them in a room with out good airflow.

I was planning to get a resin printer. but after learning of all the different chemicals plus the washing and curing I decided to stick to FDM

Well, I watched this video a year ago, and I applied changes to my printing setups. It has definitely changed how good my prints are. My prints went from bearely recognizable stuff to truly beautiful minis. Thanks a lot.

Considering how much improvement in 3D printing has happened in such a relatively short period of time, the quality you were able to get isn't really all that surprising, but still is pretty amazing. Especially from a "cheap" machine. Thanks for sharing the information.

Just wanted to thank you for your videos on this channel, I've found them very helpful. I used your link to pick up my own Creality Ender 3 last week, and so far I'm loving it. After using your recommendations, I got my first successful mini (took 3 tries) last night and I'm really happy with the results. I hope you keep making great videos!

Like others, I had to poke around a bit in the comments to figure out how to use these settings on current versions of Cura, but WOW. It works great, and I really enjoyed watching this video for this guy's infectious good attitude.

On my site, I have a large minis profile. That should work for larger minis, but there are probably better profiles with better support settings for other large non-minis. Hope that helps! :) The Ender 3 group on FB is a great resource BTW. I recommend joining it already :)

I'm BRAND NEW to 3D printing (just got my Ender 3 v2 about 4 days ago) and I wanted to print minis exactly like these show throughout your video and I'm now installing Cura and I'm going to try this profile out and see what happens. I just bought a Ender 3 pro specifically for model railroading, creating custom parts and pieces as well specifically posed figurines. I model in HO scale (1/87) so very small models and I am looking forward to trying these settings. Thank you for sharing your knowledge, it is people like yourself and others who are willing to share and educate others that ultimately make whatever hobby you’re involved with succeed and flourish. Thank you again and keep up the good work.

Thanks for the tips, gonna try this out soon. For tiny prints I've always just set the shell thickness slightly larger than the nozzle size (e.g. 0.45mm shell thickness for a 0.4mm nozzle), so it's just a single walled shell and set the minimum layer time of 5 to 6 seconds with 100% fan speed at all times. This allows me to use lower infill percentages between 25% to 50% infill and still get nice quality prints but I can still do 100% infill if I want a stronger print. I also use 0.75mm to 0.1mm layers but still get good results up to 0.2mm with this profile.

Wow - im really impressed of the level of detail! I have a creality cr-x 10 s4, and im going to try this as soon as my Groot flower pot is done (about 15 hours) Thanks a lot for the tips.

This one video has achieved your goal for the channel, Daniel. This is just an outstanding episode. I think you've set a high bar for how to provide an unbiased review of 3D print results. My Ender 3 is ready to go and I'm going to try your profile. Will let you know. Anyone looking at buying a 3D printer, this $200 printer was relatively easy to put together and tune. I was surprised... much less time spent on tuning it than my previous printers (4 before this one). I am just blown away by the Ender 3, and channels like yours are going to help convince gamers to give 3DP a try. This $200 printer can be had for the price of 10-20 Hero Forge figures... about $75 more than the cost of a Proxxon foam cutter. It's a solid investment for game crafters, and I look forward to hearing your results from your wizard friend's Cura profile.

Your cost analysis is exactly how I see it having come from the crafting world as well - maybe $100 more than a Proxxon, at best. Pretty wild. Thank you Darren! They aren't perfect, by any means, and I could've done a bit more cleanup on some of them - but I'm still pretty happy with how they came out too. Happy printing - and thank you for the kind words!

I remember watching this video a while back, before I became more familiar with the in depth settings, and was mostly just using Slic3r. After taking about 5 hours to figure out where the disconnect between my printer and Cura was, I got it working. Luckily I read the comment form the Cura dev and just input all the settings outright. After a bit of tinkering to make it suit my printer and my needs, you have honestly helped me increase my quality by 10x. I never thought this would come out of my dinky Davinci 1.0a, even after the bed replacement and repetier swap. My latest prints are out of a transparent orange, and I've had people actually ask me if I got a resin printer. You see these videos and think, "maybe if I get a little bit of an improvement, it will be worth it, but it's just so far beyond what I expected to actually achieve. Thanks again for bringing attention to this technique and these settings, also thanks for your advice on supports.

Great video! I’ve been looking for information about getting the highest detail for small parts on my Ender 3. Thanks! Update: your tips have taken my models to the next level! I wish I could show the differences, and your tips work well for larger models also. Thanks again!

Those results are amazing for a 0.4 nozzle ! The top layer trick make sense, the top layer is a finish layer so it is logical that it is making the print look better. With a smaller nozle (0.2/0.3 for exemple) the result could be even better, of course the print will take more time but it's the main tradeof of fdm (speed vs quality). Keep up the good work.

I'm struggling to decide between sla and fdm for my first printer. I'd mostly print minis and was inclined to get a ld002r but it feels limited regarding everything else but minis. This changes everything. I can't thank you enough. May the Schwartz be with you, my friend!

Hello, as someone interested into putting their first steps into 3D-printing, is this still a relevant technique a year later for FDM Minis? I don't have a ventilated space for a resin printer, so I thought FDM would be the safer starter option.

Great video again! Thank you very kindly for sharing everyone’s print results. Sometimes it can be very frustrating when you can’t get it to work! But you sharing that profile has gone a long way to convert to me from a resident printer to a filament printer… As I’ve told you before the only reason I bought one was because I saw that you were able to get these awesome results. There is so much headache and mess associated with resin printers that when you were done cleaning up the miniature you have lost any kind of advantage by printing with resin. We cannot forget that it is a craft. It is a thing that you have to do it is not just push a button and get your product. That’s called buying and if you want to do that that’s why they make hero clicks… Personally I don’t want to do that and I’m sure that most of the people here don’t either that’s why we are trying to create and imagine new things! So again I thank you for sharing all this information with me. I have a resin printer and the amount of failures that I have put out with my resin compared to the filament printer is massive. At this point I really do think that my whole experience with my resin printer was a loss of about $600. To think that I could be running for and her three printers for the amount of money that I have laid out for my resin +1 and her three is staggering. I could have an entire plastic army already! Thank you so much again look forward to more videos!

Really impressed by these results. I just watched a video from 2 months ago (I’m commenting in March ‘24-five years later) and he was printing on a Bambu A1 mini and sharing his profile settings using a .2 nozzle but yours look so much better. I had pretty much determined I would start with a resin printing but now I’m intrigued.

More people need to start doing this. Not because I think people should be stealing from Games Workshop but because it will, hopefully, force them to price their ranges more reasonably.

I would LOVE that to be the result. Unfortunately, the actual result will likely be that they hike their prices, blame it on lack of income because of people printing their own minis, and file a lawsuit to crack down on mini pirating. Such is the nature of the corporation. 😥

Hell the king of beers, and target both are hurting for virtue signaling.

Wow - just saw your channel for the first time and have to say congratulations - you found a tiny niche in a tiny niche market that is 3D printing. Hi JM! When I started this channel, we were maybe 1,000 to 3,000 folks with 3D printers printing things for tabletop gaming. I knew there was way more folks who were into tabletop gaming who might be interested in all of the really neat options that are introduced through 3D printing - so I decided I wanted this channel to be a kind of bridge where a bunch of my hobbies could meet. Here is the kicker - I impuls-bought the Ender 3 yesterday after watching your video. Due to the four other printers I have there was (and still is) a little buyers remorse with that purchase. But I just couldn't resist the offer ... paid EUR 172 including insured shipping. That is still EUR 60 more than what I had to pay for my Ender 2 but wow - I'm pretty sure this one will be a keeper. So ... thank you for that, too ;) ... Now I'll have to find out how to break the news to my wife about the new family member ... *sigh* Cheers! JM

Throw a housewarming party for her when she arrives - your wife might love her too :) For EUR 60 more than the Ender 2...the difference in build volume will shock you. You should be able to use your Ender 2 profile just fine on the Ender 3 BTW :) Best of luck! Lemme know how it goes - and so excited for you!

When I followed the video and punched in 99999... till the end, I got an error too. Putting in "999999" worked for me and got rid of the error.

I was able to get them to work. You’ll need to edit the profile files directly. A curaprofile is really just a zip file. Change the .curaprofile extension to .zip, then you can edit the two files with a text editor and update the values that are causing the errors. Then zip the two files into a new .zip file, and change the .zip file extension back to .curaprofile.

Yay! Those are my prints at about 4 minutes in! (He got the wrong name but he is forgiven :P ) and with your settings they work great. I actually printed another heroforge custom today for my brother at .04 layer height and a bit more speed actually and the results were even cleaner! Thanks again for your settings as they have made things amazing!

Hey man, I got into the 3D printing world a couple months ago - and need to say THANK YOU in short. I jumped in deep right off the bat by doing some research and purchasing a Dremel Digilab 3D45. I felt unstoppable because i had one of the badass toys on the block, and the prints with stock settings were meeting my expectations! And after being satisfied with many prints i wanted to expand my learning more and purchased a resin printer, Anycube Photon Mono 4k. Sure the print area was sacrificed but this was more for my curiosity... and the quality blew me away. The difference in quality was not even in the same ballpark, and i got seriously depressed after each print with the resin... kicking myself for dumping over 2k into my fdm. That's when i found this video... you have evened the playing field by showing me that settings impact the quality in ways i haven't expected. I still consider myself a complete novice and am willing to put in the time and effort to learn more about the hobby with both fdm and resin, however now light has been shed and it allows me to make judgment calls on which printer to use depending on my project needs! THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!

I'm so flattered you think that. I don't have time to watch all of your videos, but I've learned so much about upgrades (mostly that I want to do eventually :D) from your 3DPT show that someone shared with me a few weeks ago. If you find a way to get this result in S3D before me - I would loooove to know! After improving support removability and increasing speed, making a S3D profile that is comparable is my next priority for this direction.

I got great results with S3D. Slow speeds(30mm/s and 40% on outer most perimeter) and small layer heights(0.08mm) combined with enough perimeters (3 or so with enough infill 50+%) and custom-placed supports worked really well. Some models are more difficult than others but I was impressed by the quality my Duplicator i3 was capable of. It takes a while but generally worth the wait. I did have some extruder motor overheating. Some models have many small features and separate supports and thus many start/stops and extrusion. I countered this by fusing supports and by slowing my printing speeds even further for some models. And by reducing my retraction length. Maybe you should try using a separate process(0.2mm layer height) for the base if you want to save time. This is what worked for me. Slow and small layer heights and this way you can push your printer to its limits:)

The creality ender 3's z axis has a 0.04 mm step, which means your layer height should be a multiple of 0.04, if it's not layers might end up at different heights, which can warp your mini, or cause it to bud or fail. Minis tend to be small, so these errors will have a fairly low chance to fail in a small mini such as a medium sized player character. 0.04 itself, will have the nozel hit the mini, so 0.08 is recommended if you want a zero% chance to fail, or any sizable mini

im just starting out trying to print minis with a Wanhao i3 and gotta say it's a bit hit or miss. but now i feel so much encouragement after watching this. thank you so much. i know i'm a bit late to the party but so glad i found this channel

Something all new players to the 3D printing world should remember is to always do preventative maintenance on your printers. Something as simple as checking for loose nuts and screws can mean the difference between a good print and the loss of half a spool for a crappy print because your print started great and you walk away only to come back to spaghetti all over your machine.

i might be wrong, new cura have "ironing" where it ironing the toplayer to smooth it out, wonder how that would look on a mini :D

Thanks for the video! I'm getting back into painting minis and have been interested in 3d printing for a while. It's great to see videos that take the mystery out of some of these things so it becomes easier to tackle. Might just pick up a Creality machine soon :D

With a 0.4mm nozzle on a stock CR china printer, that is some very good quality prints. Maybe I have a tip for your supports, It's kinda based of what Maker'sMuse said in a recent video with his ''Design Tips for Support Free 3D Printing Models (FDM)''. You have a very small layer heights and a very wide layer width: You can increase the support angle setting, especially with a 100% fan with PLA. Maybe try a better fanduct as well. I'd say grab a print angle test model. But I suggest you set it to 65 instead of 50, and if you have great cooling up to 75. Just be warned a high fan speed could blow away prints, induce warping, or cause bad layer adhesion, even with PLA.

Slower print speed 10:46 4. supports: zigzag (break in chunks) 13:43 5. orientation (experimental) Todo: reduce print time (6h for one minni might be had for some). At 19:08 leo's comparable results are shown at 20% infill and half the time.

This is an awesome video! Since this video has been published, Cura does have a gyroid support that has made support removal a lot easier, and seems to work quite well. I found that zig zag worked best for me before. I'm glad I watched this video, it's gotten me to play with my settings again and it's cool that some of the things I've been doing other people are too. Thank you, Danny!

Well, thank you kindly either way! All that LOTR did me some good ;) The profile won't work on the Anet A8 - but the settings absolutely should. Cura, 100% infill, 9999999 top layers, 0 bottom layers, 20-25mm/s, and 0.08 (ideally 0.05mm or less) layer height. Good luck! Lemme know how it goes!

the settings "100% infill, 9999999 top layers, 0 bottom layers,25 mm/s, and 0.08" works on my Anet A6 so it should work on your A8

Hey, MakewithRex: A lot of the stuff that is in the video works on my AnetA8. The layer height butter zone is the same as the Ender3, and printing the halo cooling duct is magic. The "all top layers" also works nicely. I drop speeds to 20 on everything except the outer walls, which are 10, but the results are fantastic.

I used to reforrmat 100GB HDDs with Windows XP...six hours is nothin' lol

Well, for some people it's an eternity. Keep in mind, the 3D Printing community is interesting - some folks get frustrated if their printer bed doesn't heat up in 1 minute vs. 5 minutes. Time is important to a lot of folks who want to maximize their printer's time being used. I'm a little more relaxed, but want to try and cover as many reasonable angles as possible.
