How to prime the VW TDI engine fuel pump and purge air out of the fuel lines (2009+ engines)

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Run the fuel pumps to prime the fuel lines anytime the fuel system is opened. This is done during VW TDI and Audi TDI engine fuel filter replacement www.myturbodiesel.com/1000q/a5... on the 2009+ engines. Earlier engines run the fuel pumps whenever the key is turned to ON. Visit www.myturbodiesel.com for more VW TDI and Audi TDI FAQ..

Hie , got a Vw Touareg r5 TdI, my problem is last week the fuel station guys put diesel that was contaminated with water, after driving for a few kilomtres, the car stated misfiring and some jags then it stopped, i tried to crank it then it started aftr few seconds of idling it cuts off,we checked the diesel in the filter thats when whe saw that there was a mixture of diesel and water, so we drained all the diesel in the tank and cleaned the tank and also cranking to clear everthing in line from tank to the diesel filter, then we put new diesel n new filter, but nw the car is only cranking without starting, wat could be the problem guys

If your just changing the fuel filter (black cartridge) a simple way to do this is to just prime to filter itself. I used a small 1 litre utility pump with a nozzle that fit into the spout on the side of the filter. Started up straight away easy money , no mucking around taking out seats or anything like that 😊

If you were to manually bleed the air out using a vacuum pump like a Mightyvac, which of the four hose(s) at the fuel filter would you need to disconnect and plug the vacuum pump into to draw out the air? This would be on a 2012 mk6 Golf. I’m assuming you would disconnect the braided cable that goes to the HPFP and clamp that closed, and then connect the vacuum line to the port on the fuel filter and draw in the fuel to the vacuum. Does that sound right?

  • @dominicfynn506

Or actually would I need to hook the vacuum to the fuel return line (back to fuel tank) which would draw fuel from the tank and filter and then into the vacuum which would ensure the filter is full with fuel and no air?

There is a much easier way without VCDS than your hard way. There are two relays for the fuel pumps. The relays are located below the dash board. You have to remove the cover to access them. The relays are labeled 404 and located at place 4.1 and 5.2 (side by side). Remove and jump them. For daredevils like me, a paperclip does the job :-)

Ours is a 2011 Polo TDI BlueMotion (cfwa CR engine). Does anyone know the manual way to run both pumps to bleed the fuel line? I've read that if the fuel line is not adequately bled, the result is permanent damage to the injector equipment.

on a duramax first you need a special tool called a hand, which you use to press the primer on the filter housing. Then it's done. why they have 3 pump is bullshit, at most you need one lift pump to feed the main high pressure. I will stay with the BRM and older volks diesels. The new gen has very bad injection pump design that eats itself up.

Just because some of you have started you cars without priming the system does not mean its an OK thing to do. You could very well be damaging your hpfp (you know, the one that uses fuel for lubricant) every time you do it. It may not fail the first time, but when it does fail it will be very expensive to fix. Quit being cheap and buy a VCDS cable if you are going to work on your car. So when you use the vcds program somehow the air magically disappears? And it's not being purged by the pump? This makes no sense. When you use the vcds or crank, your pump is still purging air the same exact way... Meaning the air is escaping VIA pump. No matter the method air will pass through the pump to purge it. Explain in detail if I'm wrong. Otherwise clean the housing, fill the housing half way with diesel slowly lower the new filter so the filter is primed. Screw the top back on and let her rip.

Maybe you figure it by now, but the idea is to not run the high pressure fuel pump without fuel. The Bosch CP4 has already a poor design and like to grenade itself from time to time, running this without fuel can destroy it because a cam inside the pump is lubricated by fuel. Of course, this being on the timing belt spins when the engine is spinning so that's why you need to prime the system with a diagnostic tool.

Keep blowing brake cleaner until the engine keeps running whithout it trying to fall still. The air will go away whitin 2 minutes.
