Did you ever get the pedal lock and evaluate on different VWs ? Once saw someone made a steel box to lock the shifter in gear with a padlock. The two sides slid in from the left and right and had side panels extending up to protect the padlock from bolt cutters and disc cutters a bit... Will see if I can find the picture I took at a show. Wish someone made those, but it was an owner's innovation.

I use a 'U' lock on the gear shifter and a steering lock.. if I'm leaving my classic parked overnight then I also take the roter part with me..don't rely on only 1 deterrent.. I've travelled across Europe for 12 years each spring/ summer and so far so good.

All great tips. I have a 12V siren grounded to the door light switches (the ones that control the dome light). The power for the siren is hooked up to the always hot fuse and has a switch wired inline, which I have placed in the front trunk and is accessible from the driver side front fender through an OE hole. If I want the siren on then I simply reach up through the fender to the hole to the trunk and hit the switch. When its activated, opening either door will cause the siren to go off. Of course, this will not prevent anyone from stealing the car, and the siren shuts off as soon as the door is shut, but ideally the noise is enough to scare the thief off.

But passers-by are not likely to run to your car with its siren on and say, "Stop sealing that car." They'd likely be threatened into leaving the area.

I was thinking of making a KK Alarm. Instead of a siren, the alarm screams, “Look everybody …it is Kim Kardashian! ……or…..”the first people who come over here win 500$…ready set go! For and over. Those would get people near the car….sending the criminals on their way. Or maybe a young boy loudly saying, “help me please…..these men are trying to touch me.” Creativity is the name of the game. In the late 1970s, my buddy had his beloved car stereos stolen about 10 times. The last time, he bought the top of the line stereo….and superglued fishhooks to the back of it…. So then when the thief put his hands back there and gave a good yank trying to pull it out those hooks set really nice and deep in his fingertips. One night, my friends mother reported hearing screams….then sobbing….and then a terrible awful scream…. I see poor disadvantage car stereo thief attempted to remove his fingers from his fish hooks. For those of you who haven’t been fishing and I haven’t had the pleasure of having a fishhook go in your hand here’s how it works it doesn’t really hurt that bad going in it feels like a needle but it has a prong on it which is designed to keep THE FISH from coming off the hook once he’s getting it well the same is true with your fingers and every time that hook moves or wiggles as the fishing line titans you wanna jump out of your skin I cannot imagine the pain having five or 10 of those in my hands… Deep in my fingertips and there’s no easy way to remove it. What we did when we went fishing is we would cut the line and then we would use a pair of pliers and slowly try to work it out. That gentleman didn’t have that option and basically had to just kind of tear through his fingertips as he came out of the car. There was blood all over the car and I don’t think I’ve ever seen my friend happier. I wasn’t sure why he was happy. Part of it was it had work and his stereo had not been stolen and part of it was he was sick of these guys stealing a stereo over and over and he was pretty sure they wouldn’t come back after that story got around town it. Well he knew what was next. That is, he was pretty sure the next time what they would do is just saw the whole dashboard apart and take the stereo out that way so he got a bunch of angle iron and got under his dashboard and screwed it in included in and one day he came to his car and they were cutting his dashboard but they didn’t get through the angle iron. The 70s were an interesting time

Mike, please remove your fuel filter from your engine bay. Where it's located now is a big fire hazard. It won't be the first bug/bus that has been written off due to fuel filter leakage. I fitted my fuel filter underneath the gas tank on my split window bus. I'm sure you can find a perfect spot in the front where your gas tank is located on a bug.

Very few air cooled VW's are stolen. Besides, nearly 90 percent of stolen and burgled cars were unlocked and/or had the keys in the ignition. A lock merely keeps an honest person out. As someone other commenter said, the only people interested in these vehicles are car people in our community. Fact is, every part for these cars is available and cheap. I see 60's beetles for sale every week in the 3k price range.

You can lift the handbrake without entering the code ,but if you had to put the handbrake down you had to turn the combination wheels , say 0000 for example before you can press the button with your thumb to release the handbrake. A couple of thoughts about using technology: if you have a second person and you can effectively hide their phone in the vehicle, you can track it. Another option is a security or trail camera that you pay a cellular data plan for (could also be a phone) that will notify you and record to the cloud when it detects motion. Being a hunter and having cellular trial cameras, it is nice to use them from time to keep an eye on something that needs monitoring. They are kind of expensive, but entry level ones have come down to around $200 and the data plans are reasonable. Likely they toss the camera out the window, but also possible to figure out how to nanny cam it so it is hidden, or maybe put into a corner they won’t catch it. Oh, and they also have GPS. Just a few options in addition to what has been said. May also get you face to face with a scum bag which is a whole other topic.

What if you make some kind of kill switch on the compressor if you have air ride, you can lower it where it’s sitting on the ground and then kill switch it so #1 they won’t be able to tow it because it’s fully on the ground and can’t grab it anywhere under the car, #2 if they start it they can’t drive it because most likely it will either be caught on the ground or get stuck on something and it’s not powerful enough to free itself most likely.

thats a cop out. your offering a public service, and i appreciate that. You can also state that if their gonna steal it, their gonna steal it. Which is the king thief TowTruck.i hate to profile what a thief looks like, so im gonna assume statistically mind you, that these folks are young, totally different mindset, then that 70s generation. I find very few people that kmow didly squat about these wonderfull simple vehicles, & that includes a generation of mechanics, at least in Oregon, my home. to make a long story short , why give them anything, Let those poor Basturds work for it. & dont contribute to the information hwy, remember that? lol. When u were showing defensive techniques u could of easily left out the many ways to snag your property.. pop the clutch , thats a senior mostly that gets that. stick shifts are gone with manual window handles. My date commented how cute they looked, lol. in closing i have to admit i did not know that you could pull that electrical wire from your license plate and get it going

I had a beautiful VW like this one.The mechanic who sold it to me placed a door bell push button between in the middle of the back seat on the floor. All i had to do was to reach back to press the" start button" after turning on the ignition. It was hidden away and only me and a few back seat passengers who probably forgot all about the trick push button start in the early 19 80's new about it.Maybe it can help .!Kind regards Carlo.

I've been thinking about this subject for months. I plan on taking a weekend trip with my Bug in the coming months but the thought of it getting stolen is in my head. I can pull the rotor but I'm more concerned with it being loaded on a flat bed in seconds, so making it that it can't start is a mute point in that case. Peddle and wheel locks are a possibility. Is there anything out there like a motion detector that would make a unmistakable noise should someone enter or move the car?

But a missing rotor is one of the first things pro thieves look for, and will have extras with them. As this clip states, they only need to move it a short distance to a covered truck, and off they go. Even if a parking boot's attached, they quickly lift the wheel to get a skateboard underneath, and then move the car.

I have a 67 bug and I have had 5 attempts to steal it. It came from Germany with a steering lock on the shaft. That has saved it twice. Then ones I shorted out the engine something and so the shop ran an extra wire to the engine and that confused people. One night I saw some guys running from my car and the left the door passenger door open, and they left a set of allen wrenches on the floor. They were trying to take the steering lock off. Another time my hood was up in a restaurant parking lot in broad daylight. They were trying to hot wire it. Another time they hot wired it and drove it up on the lawn across the street because of the lock. Another time I left it in long term parking at SFO and they broke in through the windwing and took stuff I had. I've had my front bumper taken off. I busted some guys trying to steal my back plates. Yeah, bugs are, 67 bugs are just a pile of parts ready to be sold off part by part.

Irrespective of all manner of Anti-Theft Devices, it's important to understand that the VW Beetles are increasing in value, some at exponential rates! If you truly love your Beetle, then do not drive / park it at night, away from your home. If your Beetle hasn't been stolen, the Hub Caps are valuable, and may be missing, or even the wheels! After investing a small fortune, and almost a year in restoration work, I never use my Beetle at night, it's always garaged. If I use it through the day, it is always under surveillance. Times have changed, and people need to understand this.

Describe the wheel boot as ineffective as they can still drive until it breaks ... yet also describe their way of stealing it as push-starting it. Doubt they could push-start it with a wheel clamp though. My guess is that these probably aren't really big theft targets anymore, as while they're easy to steal only enthusiasts (who hopefully wouldn't steal them) would know these tricks. Likewise the market for them and their parts isn't what it is for, say, a Honda Civic, the most-stolen car in the US. The parts are worth something, but they're harder to fence, enthusiasts seeking parts are more likely to have heard of the one stolen, and the car and it's parts are more likely to be recognizable. Higher chance of getting caught in the process of trying to sell parts. I have a '73 Super Beetle, I don't think it would be nearly this easy to steal as it has a steering lock (not insurmountable but definitely a hassle) and I modified it with a custom fuel injection setup. No doubt I could get it running without the key in a couple minutes tops, but that's because I built it and know exactly what everything does, even an experienced VW expert would have no idea what they're looking at.

Weld up a small box under your seat. Welded to the floor, use a disc lock on it with a cover to prevent the chop saw from cutting the lock. Make it out of , 1/4 plate. This will dissuade them from cutting it. It should be in a hard place for them to access, making a battery operated cut off saw hard to use. A wire from the starter...not from the main battery powers the 12 v...... I have a 12 volt car....motorcycle battery. A sealed gel cell works good. Run the wire in a loom, hard to find. And spot tie it under the car. The battery will not overcharge because the big battery acts as a shunt. The silent.....(no bells and whistles....we want to CATCH them and prevent your neighbors 23 window from disappearing next and becoming a chicken coop in Guatemala.)..... alarm/ gps contacts your phone. If your quick you can confront them provided your conceal is with you, and your wife has your six. Remember it’s a felony to shoot someone over stuff....so don’t. But your piece could make them beat feet real quick. We have open carry here so displaying your gat is not a felony. Check your laws. And stick by them. If it’s gone...call the police, and track it. If they disconnect the main battery....the gps will still run for ages on that gel cell. Gps is about the coolest stuff I’ve ever saw. And now it’s cheap. Locking your car ,compartments, taking the keys and a hidden switch disabling the coil helps too. But gps....will catch the thieves.
