Ditto. After what seems like countless attempts, I have finally done a color/basecoat that looks WET. It’s looks like polished clearcoat and it’s just the color coat, almost zero orange peel. It’s all about gun setup as far as air pressure, then distance will dictate either a dry coat if too far and/or fast, with the other extreme being lots of runs from getting too slowly and too closely. I finally got it and I hope it wasn’t a fluke. It couldn’t be though because the whole bumper looks that good. It’s jet black, and looks like a bottomless black water lake. I was very proud, until my pride allowed me to let my guard down and end up with some runs underneath the bumper . Got cocky. This job requires real deal discipline. ANY lapse in judgement can really cost you, besides the money down the drain, there’s your sanity hours and hours and hours of reprepping the part and even then it’s either gotta cure before sanding or you can use a chemical stripper.

Practice panels helps a ton. Cheap used fenders, hoods and trunk lids off of Craigslist, OfferUp etc. Damaged ones are best because you can practice body work and paint it as many times as you want over weeks or months to keep your skills sharp.

Its better to spray in the hidden areas and the edges first. Prevents overspray landing on fresh clear on the flat sections if you have bad airflow in the booth also, helps prevent accidental runs when you are spraying the bumper.

I have zero runs on the surface, finish looks amazing even before any wet sanding, but I got a couple drips off the sharp bottom edge. Possible to sand them flat and buff out? What's the best way to clean that up when it happens? Thanks, your videos have been amazing.

such good advice, I spray cabinets and furniture/ I have done a few car parts too. My challenge is the intersections on the face of cabinets where the it over laps. usually hit two passes in one direction then feather in short at the intersections. fan pattern change each way and changing fan size for different areas...a good challenge in a house on a ladder with helper directing the light. and air hose..

Bumper color looked abit different from hood and fenders. It's not plastic, i did the same one. Its the application of pearls. I learned the hard way. It will match once you get the spray technique of pearl. Applying it, Slow, fast, #of coats, distance from panels these all changes the way it will look at the end. I got a gun setup just for pearls now and I don't change settings or pressure. Now my color matches are very good. So I don't have an excuse to say plastics turn out different when sprayed. This is for pearls not metallics. Just something I wanted to share from my experience as I tried to fine tune things. Sometimes one and half coat matches better than 2 coats. These manipulations give better match , almost unnoticeable.

I'd love some opinions on paint. I'm doing a 69 beetle myself right now, and have done the undercoat layers in 2 pack primer. I originally was going to do 2 pack base coat with clear, but have heard specifically for a Beetle that 2 pack can crack around the door hinges and that I should go acrylic, and that I should also skip clear coats because it only lasts 5-10 years before it starts to go milky and gross. Thoughts? What would you (or anyone reading) recommend?

Brian, u stated not to use Sata RP, I have been using it exclusively to lay down a lot of clear fast. I have a super flat surface using RM DC5100 clear. Do u think DV1 gun will work better? Troy

If your are new to paint. Sata rp won’t work well. If it is working for you. Don’t change it. The dv1 clear is great for beginners though
