How to Prevent or Fix the Steering Wheel Column Lock Actuator Issue on an Audi A6 / Q7 (DIY Repair)

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Dear viewer,
In this video I am showing you how to repair or prevent the infamous steering lock issue that A6 C6 generation Audis have. The same steering lock module has also been used on Audi Q7 SUVs from the same generation and therefore, these are also prone to the same failure that is observed with the A6 C6. As the module is pretty much identical across the two vehicle models, the solution that I have presented in the video is also applicable for the Audi Q7.
There are several ways to deal with the steering lock issue, which I have listed and explain in the video. However, the manner I have chosen to prevent the steering lock problem from appearing on my personal vehicle was to simply disable the steering from locking itself. If it can't lock, then there is no way that module can fail in the locked position.
As usual, if you have any questions please post them in the comment section below and we will do our best to answer them. Don't forget to like the video if you found it helpful and subscribe if you would like to see more videos like this.

I'm a retired Professional Wrench, many years at Audi Dealerships, as I remember replacing 3 or 4 complete Steering Columns (plus reprograming) during my career. I had told myself to never own one of these vehicles partially because of this issue, low and behold I found myself buying a 2007 A6 Avant with 139,000 Miles in early January of 2021 for $5,000 to replace a souless 2011 Honda Element with uncomfortable Seats that I unloaded to an Acura Dealership for $10,000. The Audi is 4 times the Vehicle at half the price. I've since make a few repairs plus as preventative maintenance I replaced both the Upper Timing Chain Tensioners. I now have 171K Miles (late November 2022) on the Avant and couldn't be happier with my purchase. I haven't experienced any steering lock issues with my Audi although after stumbling upon this wonderfully informative Video I intend on sniping the Red w/Black Trigger Wire. Thanks so much😉 Randy AKA randog311

@@ralphwhitaker8761 I would think not. FYI, early December of 2022 I performed the Clipping of the Wire described in the Video while my 2007 Audi A6 Avant was running and the Steering was Unlocked. My Vehcles Steering Lock Actuator will never lock the Steering again.

Hello Randy. We have the same car and I'm experiencing this problem explained in the video. With the wire snipping solution would I need to clear the code first? Or would the snipping resolve the issue by itself? Ive read on forums that after snipping the wire a ignition dash light comes on. Does this happen if the code is not cleared before snipping? Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thank you!

@@maupin_media Unfortunately snipping the wire while the Key is On and the Steering Wheel is Unlocked (Drivable with no Codes) is a "Preventative Measure" to be taken before there is a problem). Clipping the wire in question while the vehicle is drivable is to then prevent the Steering from ever locking again.

I just bought a 2007 A6 with 160K Miles on it with several issues that I can't blame for the price. One of them was that the steering lock was reluctant to work once in a while so I figure it was only waiting for the most inappropriate opportunity to fail completely. Of course I followed your easy video now that I'm still on time. Thank you so much for spare me such a huge headache.

Excellent video, so easy. Thank you so much! Stranded yesterday with my A6C6/4F 2005 2.4v6, car was completely dead after short shop visit. Tried to erase codes with vcds, no luck, couldn’t acces modules. Pulled fuse 42 for 5 minutes, to reset fault code steering column lock module. Battery on charger, was quite empty by trying and fiddling around to try and find/fix the error. et voila! Car back to life again! So happy. Today i’ve first cleared all the codes and cut the red/black wire. No steering lock anymore but don’t care. Thanx for sharing this info!!!

I don't believe that it is applicable to any other Audi models, at least not in its current form, as the lock module is physically different and so is the electrical connection going to it.

So.... our '08 Q7 has the dreaded no crank/no start "steering column defective" issue happening intermitently for over 2 years now. First thought it was a battery issues -not so. Tricky to clear the code due to not being able to turn the vehicle on: Pull the high beams on, 4-ways on, and depress the brake pedal -then read/clear code in channel 05). The vehicle will work..... until it doesn't again. After replacing the relays & micro switches in the steering lock actuator (major pain to do btw -thanks Audi) I thought I had it fixed but the issue returned 2 months later. Came across this video and performed the snip as described.... time will tell and I'll post back if it fails. Thanks!

Hi I am so happy to see this video and see that the problem can be easily solved without a big financial outlay. I know the switch is hanging on the Steering Wheel Column Lock Actuator. That the Steering Wheel Column Lock Actuator does not work properly there is no command for the switch to work. I just want to understand. Once you have cut the wires will the switch work without being hung on the Steering Wheel Column Lock Actuator? When you take out and insert a key there is no longer the sound of the Steering Wheel Column Lock Actuator and it is actually deactivated?

Hey I have an EPC Fault again with my S6. My garage thought it was because the battery went too low because there were codes for that aswell even tho I didnt notice anything. So they basicly put the settings of the Throttle Valve Controller back as they must've been lost of the battery outage. It worked, the car was having no errors untill 2 days later. • @EndlessMotorWorks

I checked the codes and from the info I was able to gather they all point to a fault with the electronic throttle bodies. What the exact issue with them is, I can't really say without looking at the car. However, from my experience it is likely that the throttle bodies themselves have gone bad. It is a common issue on 4.2L V8 and the 5.2L V10 engines. First thing I would do, however is to clean the throttle bodies and perform a new adaptation with VCDS. If the issues doesn't go away or comes back after some time, changing the throttle bodies would be the way to go.

  • @EndlessMotorWorks

Unplugging the entire connection will cause the vehicle not to start, as the module is part of the immobilizer. Not having it connected at all will make the car think that someone is tampering with the immobilizer system. Cutting the wire is the only way to go. By cutting this particular wire you are interrupting the connection between the part of the mechanism that engages the actual lock, while still allowing all other functions of the steering lock to continue as they were. Regarding your other question about the procedure being the same on a VW Touareg, I can't tell you for sure. What I know is that this module was sued on the A6 C6 and first gen Q7. You will need to check by part number if the same module was also put on your vehicle.

  • @EndlessMotorWorks

You can, but it will not resolve your issue, because the wire that is getting cut only supplies power for the actuator motor, meaning the thing that actually engages and disengages the lock mechanism for the steering wheel. That being said, the steering lock actuator is also an integral part of the immobilizer system. If your vehicle isn't starting, your steering is unlocked but you are sure the issue lies with the steering lock actuator, then replacing it is the only way. Do have your vehicle scanned for errors, as failures of the module in this way is not very common. You need to eliminated every other possibility for a no start of your Q7.

When you cut the wires does it affect anything else in the car?

  • @EndlessMotorWorks

    @EndlessMotorWorks

No, it only prevents the steering lock mechanism to engage and lock the steering. By cutting the wire, when the lock is disengaged, it will not engage again, thus solving the issue of it becoming permanently locked when the microswitches fail.

Since it is only unlocked when engine is running can I cut the red wire with black stripe while engine is running?Would this action do some damage to car computer since engine is running?

You should be fine cutting the wire while the engine is running. Still, I would recommend doing what I show in the video, namely putting the ignition key in the accessory position, checking if the steering is unlocked and if it is, cutting the wire then.

I cut the red and black wire and my steering lock doesn’t lock now as you stated. But now I’m getting this annoying message on the dash now saying “to engage steering lock, press and hold stop button”. The message on the dash also has a beeping noise with it and it only occurs when i open the driver door to get out the car or when i open the driver door to get in the car. Any idea about this or do you know how to make that go away?

I have never seen or heard anything concerning this error message. The only reference I am able to find is of an error message that goes as follows: "Put the shift lever in Park or the car may roll away, to engage steering lock, press and hold stop button." Is this the fault message that you are getting?

Hey Sir, I actually stumbled on this video as I have a Audi A6 2008 and it is completely down one day suddenly. It doesn’t start or even crank. All the electric things work like the mmi. I cannot connect to the scanner and the even the key is stuck in the ignition. Do you know something I can do.

  • @EndlessMotorWorks

    @EndlessMotorWorks

The first thing I would do is to check battery voltage. Sometimes the battery might be too weak to crank over the engine, but electronics will still work. However, not being able to take the key out of the ignition, might suggest something wrong with the ignition barrel or the immobilizer. You will really need find someone who can scan the vehicle for errors. Without doing this, you won't get a definitive answer.

Most likely the ignition switch is the problem. You will need to read the errors to know for sure.

On the A8 as the electronics in the steering lock are different and so is the wiring. As far as I am aware this mod cannot be done to the A8, as cutting either one of the wires for your steering lock mechanism will also disable the immobilizer, causing the vehicle not to fire up.

Lots of different issues can cause a no start no crank situation. The first thing I would recommend is getting the vehicle scanned for errors and seeing what is the underlying cause. Having the vehicle scanned and the errors cleared is also a prerequisite in order for what is shown in the video to be successful. Otherwise, you will may cause the steering to stay permanently locked.

You can absolutely depin the wire, as long as the steering wheel is unlocked while you do that. I simply chose to cut the wire as it was easier, and I could do it with one hand while filming.

This morning I tried to start my 2005 A6 but upon inserting the key the lock disengaged while I wasn't able to start the car. Only the odometer and time were illuminated. I pulled the key out and back in, no more lock sounds and still no ability to start. Should I cut the wire and be able to start the car again or is something else at fault?

@@EndlessMotorWorks I just put my car at a mechanic to get it checked out. I called my local roadside assistant and they put power onto a fuse number 7 on the driver side fuse box, reset all codes while powering the 7th fuse and then when all codes were cleared (which took a minute) then the car dash lights went on and the car started succesfully so we disconnected the battery from the fuse. When I drove it to a mechanic and turned the car off I was curious if the problem would return. Took the key out and the steering lock surprisingly made a noise again, put the key back in, again lock noise and started the car succesfully. I don't know what the issue is but the roadside assistant said this car has common issues with steering module and needs to be checked out and/or replaced. I don't know.

I did just this, but I'm still getting the issue. Of course the steering column doesn't lock anymore but there's still no response when I'm turning the key. Completely dead and then works again after about 3-4 minutes of waiting / trying. It usually happens if I try to restart after a longer drive (30min+). Would sorting the microswitches help this?

Sounds to me like you never had an issue with the steering column lock actuator and the cause of the intermittent no start is somewhere else. You should get the vehicle scanned for errors before doing anything further.
