How to Prevent Breaking or Stripping Coil Bolts Mercedes M112 M113 Engines

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Some DIY reports have come in about broken bolts or stripped threads in the valve covers. Just be careful not to overtighten them. A torque wrench is ideal, but here is how to prevent over-torquing if you do not have one. Link to M112 and M113 service and repair kits: mercedessource.com/store/sear...

Another approach when I just have a socket wrench is to wrap my fingers around the head and twist like turning a dial to prevent over-torquing. The click type torque wrenches definitely don't work for this or for valve cover bolts. I stripped one of the latter because I couldn't feel the click, though installing a helicoil was easy enough.

The amount of people overtorqueing bolts in aluminium ist staggering. Some even mangage to strip out oil pan drain plugs and other large threads. You can't warn enough to always look up the torque specs and use a torque wrench. Thanks, Kent!

Agreed! I think there are far too many of the old "tighten it til it squeaks" folks out there.
