We weight-in and weigh-out and if we lose any body mass at all, we have FAILED the challenge!
Unlike Naked and Afraid, ALONE, or Survivorman, there is no limit to the tools we are allowed to use on this survival challenge. Living off just WILD foods is harder than you think! If it's legal, it's fair use. Sometime we even do some bushcraft, but the main focus is really on eating wild foods, wild edibles and catching and cooking various foods.
This isn't about just surviving, this is about thriving!
Season 4: Northern Autumn, takes place in Northern Ontario with vast opens seasons including fish, catfish, pike, trout, birds such as grouse, duck, and geese, bear, deer, and moose. Also wild apples, mushrooms, berries, and so much more. We make use of all the resources in this challenge to meet the demands for calories imposed by the human body!
In this episode we make a quick bush meat storage area using a natural depression and moss. Putting the meat against the soil helps it cool and stay cool. The moss works as a cold sink to retain the cold temperatures that settle in during the night. We managed to keep our meat from spoiling for over a week this way.
Beaver are surprisingly easy to trap and offer a ton of nutrients to the forager. A real staple item! Beaver is also great eating, usually very full of fats crucial to surviving long term in the wild.

Killing beavers without survival needs is a sin, and it should be a crime. Those beavers do 10X the amount of work you do to maintain wetlands where the wild things you eat can live and grow, and when you kill them in the name of your human , predatory community, it's only a matter of time before your fellow humans bulldoze and exterminate wholesale the nature you have been a guest of.There were clearly other animals for you to hunt that would have required more effort and time to find and bag. The fact that you were able to load that bear right into the back of that car tells me the exact amount of effort you put into your claim as woodsmen. You, sir, are not a longhunter. You are a scalper whose motives are clearly destructive, and everywhere you go, you will repatriate wilderness into homesteads and fields, first by taking the lives of that which moves in the name of your quest for motion, and then by taking the lives of those things which stand still in the name of a quest to settle down. You have been unfollowed.

Killing a beaver to show an example of how to survive on beaver meat only creates a generation of people going out and killing beavers. It's not a justification, it's an attempt to game views through nostalgia and childish desire for hunting verisimilitude.

Very few people on the planet are capable of real bush survival anymore. They all need modern gizmos. Using the primitive meat storage technique is almost pointless in this video. With all the hardware, you may as well just bring a solar powered cooler I suppose. This is just a basic hunting trip.

Catch and cooks are 👌
Very few people know how to use the slow evaporation method for gathering salt from salt water. Anyone along the coast is blessed as other than this, you have to find a salt lick, an alkali flat, or a salt mine. Salt was a major trade item as a result. People think you boil seawater but that wastes too much in work calories and firewood. The evaporation method is essentially what people see briefly in salt harvesting videos. One can just take seawater and over time, the water evaporates until eventually just sodium chloride is the vast bulk of the "salt" that remains (versus other salts).
i needed a good video to help pass the slow time at work today but now im hungry and want to go camping. i might have to start planning a spring trip to keep myself sane through the winter.

I'm curious what kind of licensing you need in Canada to hunt such a wide variety of game. You seem to have hit a good sweet spot where lots of stuff is in season at the same time. Recall that in South East Alaska, the old time native method to “preserve” salmon, was to bury it and allow it to “ferment”. With modern influences of plastic Tupperware, natives would use it for their salmon storage. Problem was, Tupperware excluded oxygen, which allowed for conditions promoting botulism which then killed anyone who consumed the meat. Seeing your meat buried in plastic brought this to mind.

Steven Gonzalez I think earth worms would be the least of the problems. Think about it, fermented fish. I am guessing they were able to keep the fly maggots out, possibly, maybe, and it is my understanding that earth worms were an import from europe, having gone extinct after the last ice age, so were not an issue until later, but even if I am wrong, just think about it, fermented fish. yum. I’d rather eat the earth worms.
