Ex-Professional Cyclists Dan Lloyd and Matt Stephens give you tips and hints to make sure you are in the right place come the big day!
The Maratona dles Dolomites is the ultimate test for physical and mental strength. It's 138km long with 4230m of climbing!
You will need to structure your training and make sure it's consistent so that everything comes together nicely.
If you commute by bike, you can even use that as part of the training. Don't forget to take advantage of the weather too!
It's not all about riding and riding, rest and recovery is vitally important too.
The video explains what to do in fine detail, but below is the headline pointers for you to be aware of;
Month 1:
Establish your routine
Month 2:
Build time and distance. Incorporating climbs is also important so that you can prepare your body.
Month 3:
Add intensity to the training rides.
Month 4:
Increase the distance of your rides, including interval sessions.
7-10 days before:
Taper your training to leave you fresh!
In case you were keen to know, the climbs that the event tackles are:
- Passo Campolongo
- Passo Pordoi
- Passo Sella
- Passo Gardena
- Passo Giau
- Passo Falzarego

Very lovely. Saves time and boosts efficiency for a hilly sportif prep. Thanks! Will adjust my commute routes, so to get recommended 5-min non-stop full effort stretch.

I love those training plans. Consistency is very important as you said. Short consistent rides are much more efficient than one long ride. Honestly, I used to think the opposite. Thanks for helping me out.

Dan and Matt absolutely great advice. i have a tendency to over do it. last year I went 90 days with no days off, increased mileage way to much and wound up with sore knees and tendonitis in my hamstring. after cortisone shot, PRP shot (Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Injections) in my knees. The knees are now OK. I'm still recovering from tendonitis in the hamstring with 2 PRP injections. Moderation and your game plan will get me back on track to ride century rides. While I'm recovering I appreciate your weekly motivation. THANK YOU!!

Funny to hear that cause I did the same thing. Trained all day every day, everthing came second to the bike. Then I got a heartattack, HIV and cancer. I managed to overcome all this just in time for the ride, but it was definitely a case of being overtrained. Moderation and your game plan is vital boys. THANK YOU!!

Great advice, but I would add (from my experience) also 1 week pre-race to train in Alta Badia in order to accommodate yourself with the altitude and to learn the climbs. Last year I did my first Maratona only Medium Parcorso because I was afraid of Passo Giau, which I tried to learn it 1 week before the race. All the climbs are easy to pass besides Passo Giau which is incredible hard. Distance is not long (for a medium amateur rider) but the climbs make it look longer. Another issue could be the crowed, riding along 9000 cyclist can be a joy but also a pain in the ass.

When is the best time of year to lose weight? I find that when I try to lose weight, I feel tired and fatigued, which means that i have a lower training and racing performance. This leads me to think that the best time to lose weight is in the offseason, but I see armatures and pros gain weight over the winter :O ?!
