How to prepare nasturtium seeds for planting with nicking & soaking!

Have you ever grown nasturtiums?
Well they are not only a beautiful flower, they are also an edible flower.
Both the leaves and blossoms add a wonderful peppery flavor to a salad, and make a beautiful edible garnish on a plate.
Couple things I wanted to add to the video!
1. After carefully 'nicking' the outer shell of the seed's hard outer core, soak in warm water for at least 3 hours up to 12. This is referred to as imbition~ where a seed benefits from being soaked to soften the outer shell in order to help it germinate more quickly.
You can use either a file or a pair of nail clippers to carefully 'nick' the outer shell. Be sure not to go in to deep to damage the seed membrane.
2. When you plant them, bury the seed about a half inch down, cover the seed with soil, and tamp down softly. Water with warm water, not hot.
3. When the seedlings are ready to transplant, plant them about 12" apart and watch them grow.
You will find some of the seeds float, while others sink to the bottom of the dish. Generally the ones that float are not viable. You can try and plant them, or simply discard.
Be sure to read the plant description if they are a bushing variety or a vining type. It makes a difference!

Do g float test Nasturtium, they have a cork coating but it can be rubbed off if you're so inclined. Awesome vid!
I’ve successfully grown Nasturtiums from seed for a few years with no nicking, no soaking, no sanding… keep the top of the soil moist… which you should be doing anyways. And the float test is for hydrated seeds only.
I have some nasturtium seeds soaking right now. Fingers crossed 🤞 I plant them throughout my veggie garden and some in the flower beds. Good luck with yours. Good video, thank you

I've never nicked or soaked nasturtium seeds but still have great success. I'm sure nicking and soaking makes them germinate faster, but in my own experience, I haven't found it necessary.
Good tips, thanks. Just a heads up, I couldn't see exactly how much you were nicking off the shell because your hands were out of the frame.
I’m familiar w Nasturtiums! I’ve actually gotten them to germinate and bloom inside on my corporate office window!!
I bought mine from Baker Seed and filed them which was a pain . The all started and bloomed . Bought a bunch of different kinds/ colors this year 2024 ❤ great video

Thank you for telling me this . I try to look into people and try to support business and people that do things right by the Lords Rules. I love watching your video’s and look for them everyday . Question you might want to address in your daily chats. Do you take debit cards? That is all we are using now because we have been hacked so Much .❤❤❤❤
Are these methods just for specific varieties of nasturtium? I have never soaked and never nicked them, but usually have close to 100% germination.

I was panicking when I read the headline of this video. As I was given a free packet of these seeds and have never grown any before. There was no instructions, I planted them as they are , so glad you posted this I can stop panicking now. Just hope I was not to late planting them. Thank you❤

Not at all. They still have the chance to germinate in the soil, especially if the soil somewhat damp, and that will soften the outer shell. Generally soaking them and Nikki number will just make them germinate faster. But if it works for you don’t fix what’s not broke! Thanks so much for sharing.
Thanku I have the directions but I was trying to figure out which part to nick or sand
I bought my first pack of Nasturtium seeds last fall. I have yet to plant them as I’m not quite as confident in growing anything from seed. It’s the last week of May, so I’m assuming that it’s too late to plant them for this summer. My goal was to plant them in flower pots instead of in the ground. My seeds are called Dwarf Jewel, Non-GMO, Heirloom seeds by Gardeners Basics. The packet says to soak them up to 8 hours and then plant immediately or they will die. Will it be okay if I wait until next spring to prepare and plant my seeds? There is no date on the packet. Thanks for your advice. BTW, I’m in North Carolina in zone 8a.
I don’t nick the seed nor soak them I just throw them back in the garden and they grow fantastically.
No need to nick or soak. Mine germinate fine. Even pop up all over the garden as volunteers.
the floating seeds test for viability is an horticultural myth, you can plant them all :)
Can I use sandpaper for nicking?

Nearly all will float if they’re dried properly until they soak up some water..not good advice

Likewise! I planned ahead to get mine going on St Patrick day so that I'm ready to harden off in April into May. I'd never heard of nicking them or filing them before, I followed the directions on the package and within 4-6 hours into the soak most floaters had sunk. I also soaked them in cold tea, I was told years ago this kind of medicates them against pests and or birds. It's always worked for me before, I'm especially hopeful my peat pots will be ample come planting season.
Now that I know they're edible the birds might steal them thanku I'll put net
